View Full Version : Caravaggio's model pack (6 mirrors & individual packs for each model)

Name:
Caravaggio's model pack
Version:
1.0
Compatibility:
UT2004 (perhaps 2003, they all use default skeletons)
Description:
My model pack. I've been working on this thing for a few months and I'm sick of it. The characters could probably be made a little better, but at this point I just don't f*cking care, I'd rather drive metal nails under my real nails than work on them any longer...
...my hobby makes me jolly, eh? :)
There are 15 models included in this pack, as listed here:
1. Elastigirl (From "The Incredibles")
2. Golem (Original work)
3. Idolatry (Original work)
4. Jeroboam (Original work)
5. Kefka (From "Final Fantasy 6")
6. Kei_Kishimoto (From "Gantz")
7. Lycaos (Original work)
8. Malevolence (Original work)
9. Mecha-Sapien (Original work)
10. MJ12_Commando (From "Deus Ex")
11. Major Motoko Kusanagi (From "Ghost in the Shell")
12. Mugen (From "Samurai Champloo")
13. OniYoroi (Original work)
14. Spider_Jerusalem (From "Transmetropolitan")
15. Sun-City-Guard (Original work)
For those of you looking for the cow, he's not here, and unless I ever get that animation problem worked out, I doubt he'll ever be finished.
Comments:
Do we really need both a "description" and a "comments" section?

Thanks to the guys at levels4you for the 1st mirror:
http://www.levels4you.com/review.l4y?file=12845
SaD was a great help in setting it up at the BU fileworks:
http://download.beyondunreal.com/fileworks.php/skincity/ut2k4/caravaggiosmodelpack_ut2k4.zip
Sinnthetika was kind enough to set us up the mirror at pcgamemods:
http://www.pcgamemods.com/11643
When I wasn't looking a euro mirror apparently went up at UTZone:
www.utzone.de/include.php?path=content/download.php&contentid=4017&PHPKITSID=85118e7e957c3957a4eaf97c9f6e2dba
The second phantom mirror came up at gamespot:
http://dlx.gamespot.com/pc/ut2004/moreinfo_6122028.html
I've loaded individual models, along with the whole pack in six parts up onto my yahoo briefcase:

Checking them out now, Caravaggio and thanks :D
If I don't see everyone online using Elastigirl I'll eat my hat.
Personally I'm more interested to see how Idolatry looks ;)
Thanks again

I was very pleased with the way idolatry turned out, but be warned, because of his design he doesn't use dual assault rifles right. I built him thinking dual weapon animations could be defined by socket attachements, but apparently it's hard coded so the second rifle just floats in the air. :(

Cool models, Caravaggio. Elastigirl rocks as I knew she would. Idolatry is awesome (I understand what you meant about dual Assault, but it's no biggie). The werewolf's cool (Lycaos) and of what I can remember was it the mecha one / commando get a big thumbs up and let's not forget the Sun City one which looks really cool.
All in all a very worthwhile download and I can only imagine the work you put into them. Also looking after the skinners is always a good thing ;)
Thanks a lot and very well done  :D

Is levels4you slow? Where else can I mirror it guys? SaD has sent me a PM saying he's uploaded it to the beyondunreal servers, but it will take an hour or two to mirror to all it's servers. I'll update the first post in a little bit.
Thanks for the comments.
Klansic, yeah I think elastigirl turned out okay. But because I used so many polys in some of the characters (don't open them in UnrealEd, it will scare you), especially the women, there's some tearing in the deformation around the thighs. Unfortunately I went too far before I realized I should fix it, so their walking animations always bother me a bit.
edt: Also, looking out for the skinners is one thing, but if you've looked at some of my layouts, you might not appreciate it too much. :p

I've seen it, I've posted in that thread a few times if you remember. But my last post is the last post in the thread, so I still have to ask if you're really at the skinning stage yet? The main problem with asking me for help is that I don't use the Maya PLE, I don't even use maya so I wouldn't know what to do. Sorry.
I might be able to give advice on writing your UPL or setting him up inside UnrealEd, but that's about it unfortunately.

I said I don't know how to use Maya. Completely diferent than unreal ed. :p
Come to think about it. How do mac people get models in game? O_o
Also, I'm not really good at texturing. The coolest parts of most of these models I've made were done with procedural texturing.

hey Motoko from GITS is nice. I started one long ago from Stand Alone Complex, never finished it though. Like the week 2004 was released actually so I have been waiting for her for UT2004 in some form. Everything is great, but that is my personal favorite, as I am a big fan of Shirow.

I don't know if any of you remember the lego guy from UT99, but on occasion, he wouldn't gib normally, he would sometimes just stretch absurdly, and there would be random poly's all over the place.
That would be very cool for Elastigirl. Instead of gibbing, she would sometimes stretch all over the place... whadaya think? (I haven't tried her yet, so pipe up if she already does.)
legacy-Mr_Caravaggio
04-10-2005, 03:21 AM
edt: Elastigirl is just attached to the regular skeleton, so no stretching for her. I'm nos sure how one could get her to stretch after death. Perhaps a new karma file could be made to make her more bendable upon death, but that's all I can think of. Was the lego guy's stretching an accident or intentional?
Maybe tomorrow or on monday I can upload individual ones to my yahoo briefcase. Any one or two inparticular that you want by themselves? The thing is, I kind of liked the idea of a pack so that all of the models get used at least a little bit. I had told Sad to flip a coin on whether or not to split them at skin city, oh well. :p

Heh sorry about that, I take close-up shots. Hey there's some good models in here though for sure! I was playing them on so many maps trying to find the best map for each.

BTW, ever thing of doing for models, spike, faye, characters from Noir?
I am hoping trying right now to do some stuff on is Motoko from Stand alone, but the rest are from other anime if i can get them done. I started a Tachikoma the first week UT2004 was out but I never finished it. I wanted it to run in place of the goliath.

I'm female, so I like Faye for her strengths as a character more than I guess some of the guys like her for. The original manga had some added depth to her personalty, which was also seen in the series. Plus I made a voice pack for her for ut2003 but would have updated it.
Hey if you do a new pack of models, you should try an all movie theme or something. I only though of that because you said "equilibrium" which made me think of the movie, and how cool it would be to have a Grammaton Cleric (Preston) model in UT2004.
legacy-Mr_Caravaggio
04-15-2005, 03:26 PM
Kefka's cape barely looks real as it is (the bottom part is attached to the top of the Skaarj skeleton's tail so it moves a bit), trench coats have been pretty much out of the question for the engine.
But characters with them are requested every once in a while. My hope is that someone, if not myself, will someday make and animate a meshless skeleton that has extensions for a trench coat that can be used by any modeller for various models. Heck, a whole set of skeletons like that would probably do modellers a world of good to get away from the default designs.
I think Faye does have character, but that's what I mean, that kind of gets lost when you put her in her default outfit. And the only other design I can remember her in is that casino outfit, or a long dress which won't work with the game.
Sinnthetika
04-15-2005, 03:48 PM
I like Faye's clothes though. I dress "goth" (hate stereotyping myself but you get the idea) which isn't how she dresses, but my own personal model I use now looks a lot more "revealing" then Faye, so nothing would bother me. I think I do see what you mean though by her personality getting lost when in the eyes of some people.
If you look at Preston's outfits in some scenes, he is without the trench when he fights in some of the key sequences such as the puppy scene, when they open his trunk. Also the second skin for the model could be the white suit which had no long coat either. The key thing would be his guns and then that would be a whole other thing to do. Plus nailing Christian Bale's likeness.
There just isn't enough models for the female gamer or at least me and a few friends of mine who are also female, to really get into. I love a lot of stuff out and I think it's cool but I just wish there was some models being done for us. Maybe I will do something again. A lot of us don't want to play sci fi chicks or undead hellraiser looking stuff.
Although I do like Evil Engine's BioFem a lot and of course your Motoko. Some people might say kitty, and it's cool but the face looks like my friend's mom, so I feel like I am playing her heh which I just don't want to play.

Bale has some pretty angular features that might actually work in low polys (makes me wonder if a Patrick Bateman model would appeal to some people). And yeah, the guns would have to be their own mutator, which might actualyl be kind of cool in their simplicity.

Either way, I'm kind of burnt on ut2004 right now, if I do make a faye model, it'll probably be for 2006. The technology page says the engine will allow for four bone assignments per vertex, and that alone would greatly improve the movement of a model as "organic" as Faye would need to be (Motoko inparticular had a lot of unfortuante tearing).
Sinnthetika
04-15-2005, 04:38 PM
My model actually is a stylized version of myself, look and clothes. Some friends say though I do look like my Lineage 2 character actually. I remember a friend in the closed beta saying "this model reminds me of you" and then many others did and before long I got into beta and loved it. Finally something "me", although the latest chronicle has but ruined that game. The only thing good is the models and of course the Unreal engine it uses.
Anyway, this thread is about your work which is nice stuff. If you are waiting until 2006 to do models, what are you working on now if anything, maps, a completely different game? Just curious, I am happy I stumbled onto you through this release and I like to watch for releases from people that do stuff I like.
Also Pm me some time if you are checking out any of the other not well known, but good MMO's like KalOnline such... even CoH is good.

I've actually never paid for an MORPG, they're just a short spanned attraction to me. I've only done betas, all the way back to UO. I still wake up in the dead of night screaming about the lag in that game...
Don't worry about being OT, I think the models have gotten about as much attention as they're going to get. If I add up the download counts from the mirrors, I get 1190 attempted downloads so far, which isn't too shabby. :)
Right now, I'm trying to discipline my lazy ass into webcomics. Probably an even less rewarding field than game models, but what the hell.
Oh yeah, I should probably get myself a job somewhere inbetween there too. :p

If you need a custom skeleton for your capes etc, thats not a prob to make. I could probably make a simple biped for you with these bones if you really need it. Thing is, you would just need to export your new animations to take advantage of them. Also if your using 3dsmax, the use of Reactor can get some nice cloth simulations for realistic animations. The unreal engine isnt limited by the number of bones, its just that some modders don't use custom skeletal structures that differ from Epic Standard.
I try to work with custom bones as much as I can now, especially in current material I'm working with. Its just much more flexable to make new animations than trying to contort the mesh to fit into Epic's anims and biped.
/me writes a tutorial on this....
legacy-Mr_Caravaggio
04-16-2005, 04:19 AM
I would like to see that tutorial.
I mentioned I'm thinking about ut2006 at this point. Well, since they announced there weren't going to be any skaarj in the game I decided one of the models I make might be a skaarj. This is only one nights work so it looks buggy, but I just have to share how much I love this whole normal mapping thing that's coming upon us.
This is a hight poly head I cut off the model for simplicity's sake, the head right now is 9162 polygons. Then the low poly head (747 triangles) which was hastily done using a poly reduction plug in (so the contours aren't the best). And finally the low poly head, with the [messy] normal map.
http://img159.echo.cx/img159/131/skaarjnormalmaptest2tb.th.jpg (http://img159.echo.cx/my.php?image=skaarjnormalmaptest2tb.jpg)

Loosk good man, I'd like to see how that turns out.
You using ZBRUSH for the high poly editing?
I love that app, so much more control over the mesh than what I can get from other programs. I showed madeline some things you can do with it and she got inspired as well.
legacy-Mr_Caravaggio
04-16-2005, 05:42 AM
Just regular old point by point modelling. I haven't taken to zbrush very well. The whole idea of having to drop the object onto the canvas for detail work, then pick it up again just to rotate is kind of cumbersome. At least it seems that way, if there's some kind of shortcut, my prideful "I don't need no stinking instructions" ass hasn't found it yet. :D Maybe if I practice some more I'll get the hang of it.
I like the general idea of it. The basic push and pull brushes don't do much more than what my regular 3d app does, but I admit they do do it with amazing speed.
PS: ...who's madeline? :p

I like zbrush, still trying to learn that. I play with it though just to do whatever. It's fun actually which I think at least for me is important when you are doing art, I just wish I knew how to use it correctly.
...and I am not saying max isn't fun. I liked it when I did use it and I plan to use that again when I re-learn more, just it always was overwhelming a little for me and challenging too...then again I think a challenge is as important as having fun when working on art.

BTW, ever think of doing for models, spike, faye, characters from Noir?
Thought I'd bump this thread to tease Sinnthetika...
Highpoly version. Currently 30,000 triangles.

Lowpoly version (test using poly reducer plug-in). Currently 3,000 triangles.

She's obviously not done, she still needs her coat and a few straps. If I get the urge, I may just skin the "low" poly version, but I'm slow so let's just leave this as a teasing post. :)
PS: Saw first few eps of Noir recently. Okay show, but kind of generic character designs.

Heh, yeah I see... So are you going to release her maybe please? :)
When you go to skin her, you could use her eyes from this - Faye Pic (http://photobucket.com/albums/y161/MadelineBloodDoll/?action=view¤t=faye.jpg) - I always liked it, she has "my eyes" in an anime sort of way in that one. Or in Session 24, some of those kind of not so intense moments.
I'm surpised you went and made her.
Yeah Noir is generic but I liked one of the character's forgot their names I haven't seen that since I lived in Japan. The blonde character though, not the dark haired one. Or even the assassin, if you got that far. Chloe I think. I didn't totally like that anime anyway. It had it's moments though and some interesting music as the series unfolded. I have no idea though if the domestic releases changed that.

Nice, but I'd definitely up the ponies, especially in the face area. Why just 3,000? This is 2005, models should be at least 4-5,000 P, with 7-8,000 being the upper limit. The DOAX Tina (http://unrealtournament2004.filefront.com/file/DOAX_Tina;27917) port allegedly has almost 15,000 (!!) P (and it shows ;) ), and she's never caused me any trouble on my substandard rig.

Hmmm... ...sweaty eyes.
Er. The eyes are problomatic, as with every animated character. I didn't spend enough time on them with the motoko model, and Mugen's entire face is just hard to look at I think. But here I think I can do better this time. Got myself a little reference sheet.

Right now I'll be happy if I can translate the mood of any of them properly.
Also, updated high poly version... (below the ugly guy)

@4tx4, as I said, that was just a test, I think I should go as low as I can before it really starts to look bad because even in the great year of 2005, mesh tearing is still a very real and frightening problem among our games. Contact your local congressman.
So yeah, when I do a more final version, I'll up the ponies.
I like that term, I think we should adopt that. :D

I would just scale the boots down a little (I'm looking at my statue right now), scale the head up, slightly. Faye uses similar proportions to a few I studied. Looks really cool otherwise. Nice work. Didn't think you'd do this heh.
