View Full Version : Why MOD's???

I remember reading somewhere along the line (can't remember if on this forum or the tech forum) where someone asked a question (cant remember what was asked) and one of the answers (don't remember exactly) if he had downloaded any mod's? saying that it was important to download other mod's in order for good game play.
What exactly are Mod's? and why would it be important to download them? What if I don't? If I did what to do with them?
thanks for your insight

ok, there are 2 types of "mods"
there are mutators and Total Convertion Mods.
mutators can be chosen in instant action before launching the game : the little tab will let you select some. you can download more so you have more gaming exeriences.
Total Conversion mods : this (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=407834) thread will give you the whole list of the UT2004 "TC mods". these mods completely change the game, for example, Red Orchestra lets you play in WW2 russia vs germany.

To expand a little on what toniglandyl said, the term "Mod" refers to game modifications; things that alter the original gameplay.
Mutators are often simple modifications and an example of this would be a mutator known as LowGrav. When playing this mutator, the game play changes so that you are playing in a simulated low gravity environment; sort of like playing on the moon or something with similar low gravity.
As stated previously, the other mods known as total conversions completely change the game. Some aspects of a total conversion may be similar to the original game, but for all intents and purposes, it is a whole new game. What's great about this is that you've paid for one game and, from the generous efforts of the Mod Community, you get a whole bunch of other games free because no one charges for the mods.
It is not important to download any mods. You do not need them to play UT2K4. The only thing you need to download are the officially released patches for the game. Mods are available if you want to play on servers that are hosting them, or if you want to play Instant Action using a mod, or if you want to play some of the single player total conversions available.
If you do download any of the mods, most will come with a read me file that will tell you where they need to go. If not, you can usually figure it out by looking at the file extensions. Put .utx files in the Textures folder, .ut2 files in the Maps folder, .uax files in the Sounds folder, and so on. Just look in the various UT2004 folders to see what kind of file extensions go in them and match them up with any mod files you download.
Also, some mods you will download as a umod file. After downloading this type of file, just double click on it and the UT2k4 installer will open up and guide you through the rest of the install.
