I like it. And the music just makes it so crazy.
Only one thing distracted me at first: Somehow I felt "small" in this map. It turned out to be bigger than it looked on your screenshots with no players.
legacy-R0Y
04-07-2005, 07:29 AM
A CTF version? Hmm... I must think about that idea. Not sure if it will be fun to play CTF on that map. OK, I could mirror the whole construction and put some additional room/hallways in between. But it would still be a rather small map for CTF. Maybe I'll do some testing first.
@ fftunes: Yeah, it's a little bigger than many people think by just looking at the pics. I wanted to give the players some room to dodge and jump around while fighting against each other. But it's still one of the smaller maps of UT2004. My aim was to make a map in the size of TrainingDay, Insidious or Compressed. And the architecture should be easy to remember. Not like all those "big halls with a lot of ramps" maps. Don't misunderstand me, I like maps like Roughinery, but sometimes when I play those maps I miss the fun of playing. Sometimes I don't want to have a strategic game. Sometimes I just want to frag. :D

And maybe make a CTF Map with the same Style? I love it! :D:up:

Yeah, AS-Yro was my first "Yro-map". AS-Yro was my first try to build a map in this plastic/glass style, but it was not the way it was meant to be. I thought I should create new textures and static meshes for the DM version. Now I'm a lot more satisfied with the result/design.

@ eviL<3: Thanks for telling me about those 3 problems.
Pic1: I see the problem. Standing on those little edges of the monitor looks like the player is standing in the air. That is easy to solve so that the player can't stand there anymore.
Pic2: Hmm, looks like I should move these trim cubes a bit down. Then the player could walk over them without noticing them.
Pic3: I don't see the problem here. You can stand on the monitor, sure. You think this should not be possible? And you wrote blocking volume next to it. There is non, thats right. And that's the reason for problem no. 1. :) But putting a blocking volume around the monitor wouldn't change anything here. The player could still stand on the monitor. OK, I could shape that volume in a way that prevents the player from standing on top of it. Is it that what you mean?

Haha, that music file is damn funny! I usually play with music off, but loaded it now into winamp...
My only problem with the map itself is that there should have been collision removed from the meshes on the wall at the ramps. I cannot strafe up next to the wall without being blocked by them. (see pic 2 next to the upper vial)

The music of my map is from a TV series, a very old TV series. I think it was a british series which main character was an old lady called Miss Marple.
There were a lot of people who wanted me to change the music to 'standard deathmatch map music' while the map was in beta phase. But now, seeing what you all write about my map, it looks like it was a good idea not to do what they wanted. My intention with this music was to say 'have fun and enjoy this map'. That's the reason why the music is so 'joyfull".

I really like the futurist/minimalistic look to this map. As stated before, very clean and that's a good theang (thing). The only complaint I really have is the lack of bot support. An hour or two more work and you could have take care of those who might play this game offline.

Well, I feel kind of stupid for stating that. Yes, there are paths created by item pick ups and player starts, but no path nodes. I think having some better paths (with the use of some path nodes) would help out the bots. I guess I have never seen a map create paths using only pick ups and player starts.

Kinda ironic how the simplest maps are the most fun. I'm not complaining, tho...gj R0Y
legacy-cwv_odedge
05-21-2005, 03:59 AM
Ok, now I feel a little less stupid. When I first played the map, I felt the bots weren't that challenging. After these posts, I decided to watch the bots. I put two of them in and spectated the match. They did move around picking up things to kill each other with just fine.
There seems to be two trouble areas in regards to bots in this map. The first is the elevator. When a bot uses it to go up, when they get to the first floor, the elevator stops and the bot tries to jump to the second floor. Of course they don't make it, land back on the elevator, which goes to the starting position and repeats.
The other trouble area is the two lowered sections of the floor near the rocket launcher. It seems bots will go into the depressed areas, but won't get out. They will just stay at the end of it like they are running into an invisible wall. If some one attacks them, they may jump out of the "hole".
I actually had a moment while watching them, that each got stuck in a troubled area (one on the floor and one on the elevator). These comments are meant to inform yourself and others (including me) on how bots behave. All these tidbits of information will only help all of us create better maps. :)
legacy-R0Y
05-21-2005, 12:54 PM
All these tidbits of information will only help all of us create better maps.
Yeah, right. Those information do help a mapper a lot. In this case, I have already solved the problem. But I'm not releasing a second version in the next time. Why? Well, I want to do more than just solving problems. The next version also has to show up with enhanced textures and static meshes. :D
But I promise you, the bots are doing the elevator jump really good in the version that is on my hard disc. :D
BTW, player starts and item pick ups and all this stuff is nothing else then a node in the path network of the bots. There is no big difference between those and the 'real path nodes'. So it is possible to build a fully functional path network without using a single path node. Although this will be unusual and in the second version of Yro you will find about 5 to 10 pat nodes, which I have used to fix some minor problems and to tweak the behaviour of the bots a bit. :D

I don't know what makes me want to play some maps again and again, but this one does. Thanks! (LongestYard and Tempest get me the same way.)
And as everyone has noted, the music's hilarious.
My friend and I try to find the most humorous music to put with a UT battle. Louis Armstrong "What a Wonderful World" is the reigning champion, but you've come up with a contender :D
I also like the look--clean and uncluttered (but interesting still), not to mention well lit. It's like the Tournament finally got someone in to clean up and re-paint, and finally screwed all the loose light bulbs in tight. I find the style a refreshing change.

And yes, there will be an updated DM version of Yro. I'm currently creating new Static Meshes. About 50 new pieces are already in the map, but there will be more. After that, I will jump into Photoshop and redo almost all textures. But I'm not mapping very often at the moment. So do not expect to see DM-Yro2 before winter.
A CTF version of Yro? Hmm, don't know what I do after DM-Yro2. Maybe a CTF version or a totally new map. Not sure about that.

Yeah I know... this has got to be one of the strangest looking maps I've ever seen, just going by the sshots. I like it though, it's got kind of a Kubricky feel to it.
Downloading. :)
*edit* BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! @ music. That just owns.
And yeah, the bots are dumb as a bag o' hammers on this map. Particularly those two depressions in the floor where they get stuck.
Otherwise, fun stuff there. Thanks. :)

Just installed the ogg file, I only had the map since I took it out my cache
It's fun to hear, a shame though that I never play with music
I want to hear everything that's going on in the map, no matter how good the music is

The music is annoying but the map would be fun if the bots did not keep getting stuck on the floor. I also noticed a cloud go through your map.:bulb:
