Name: Retro Gamer V2.1
Version: 2.1
Compatibility: UT2004

Description:
A UT2004 map, made with the "giant map" style with an 80's twist. More specifically, the graphics and sound on this map are based on the game Super Mario Brothers, by Nintendo. This map has pickups for all weapons (excluding ONS weapons), and custom pickups for health, adrenaline, etc. This is a remake of a map I have released for UT2003 last year, with many, many improvements.

There are dozens of warp points (by going inside pipes and castles), leading to various locations in the map.

Comments:
Just copy the .ut2 file into your UT2004\Maps directory and copy the .ogg file to the UT2004\Music directory to install. This map does not depend on any external static mesh or texture files.

Changes in V2.1:

- Added ZoneInfo's for location names in each room (useful for teamgames).
- Fixed the "dumb bots" problem by adding path nodes (improves gameplay).
- Removed all clan references in the map name and map design.
- Removed damage from the pool of water (lava still hurts).
- Updated the map screenshot for the level selection screen.

Changes in V2.0:

- Fixed several movers not working properly during online play.
- Slowed down rotating pipe movers.

Changes in V2.0 Beta 2:

- Added fireballs jumping in and out of the lava pit.
- Added movers to make the map feel more alive and interactive.
- Added more tubes and warp points.
- Added more jump pads and shooting teleporters.
- Added custom shield pickups, KoopaShell and BowserShell.
- Changed the lighting in all of the main rooms.
- Fixed colour bleeding in the blue sky/clouds texture.
- Made a new static mesh for the UDamage flower.
- Made the redeemer a lot harder to access.
- Moved around and added some more pickups.
- Rearranged and added obstacles in all of the rooms.
- Removed touch effects on the pool surface.
- Reduced water damage.
- Updated in-game screenshot.

Changes in V2.0 Beta 1:

- Added 4 rooms, including 2 double level rooms, plus 1 secret room.
- Added weapon pickups for every weapon (except ONS weapons).
- Added more obstacles, player starts, health, coins, etc.
- Added dozens of warp points (teleporters) to travel between rooms.

That is scary, yet somehow, genius.

I know it's a full release thread but I have to quarrel with the coin texture, that could've been a lot simpler. Also, if the pipes are static meshes, they could've been smoothed a bit. Not sure the tag or the shark fit the spirit either...

...but good job either way. But I swear to god if I walk up to one of those castles and hear "I'm sorry, the rocket launcher is in another castle", someone's going to get hurt.

Thanks for your input. :)

Well, I did actually take the shark out for the final release of the map. I was trying to make static meshes of cartoony fish from the SMB game, but my attempt didn't go too well and I just said "forget it".

I do agree that the coin shader may be a little too high-res for the theme, but I was hypnotized by their shinyness to make me think they just looked too cool to replace. As for the pipes, I could have made more sides to the cylinders, but I was going with a low-poly theme to match the 8-bit style textures.

The castles are used for doorways and teleporters to get around the map quicker. :)

Looks really cool, i'll download it ;)

I was thinking of making a map based on this theme after playing a game with Angel_Mapper's Mario mutator. Does it work for UT2004? If it did, use it will playing this map for ultimate Super Mario Madness.

I like the custom content of the map. It felt very familiar. I like the warp zones, moving platforms, textures, and custom looking pickups.

The only real complaint I have with the map is the lack of bot support on any level. I tend to play a lot of games offline and the bots just sit there until they see some one and then do their thing. :(

Anyways, nice work. :)

Those coins could probably stand to be rounder. :)

I am not sure if the Mario mutator works with UT2004, I have never tried that one.

Yeah, my bot pathing sucks. The only navigation points for AI in the map is the pickups and teleporters. Maybe I was too hasty in releasing this as a final version. When I ever do improve the map's playability, I'll update this thread with a new download link.

How about a Map, that's less "Empty" or "Basic", I mean, more meshes, rounder Surfaces, more Terrain, but still the Mario Theme/Style :D:up:

I gotta say, I downloaded this map and absolutely love it! There is something disturbing about so much death and destruction in such a 'cutesy' map... I love it!

Now we need a Sonic The Hedgehog map!

Alright, I've gathered much comments, and I have decided to go ahead and make a completely new Mario map, based on your guys' input (as well as similar comments/requests on other forums). Thank you all for your feedback.

This new map's focus will be on visual improvement, as well as a completely different layout for the gameplay element. RetroGamer V2's visuals were intentionally low poly and low colour, to give the 80's effect, unlike the new map which will have a new skool feel.

Instead of flat ground, it has a smooth, hilly terrain. Some of the static meshes (pipes, coins, etc.) have been redone, with a smoother, higher poly count. Instead of the 8-bit low-res textures imported from the SMB game, I have made the majority of the textures from scratch, all new and higher resolution.

The new Mario map also features question mark blocks, in which if you jump underneath them and hit them with your head, pickups will spring out (1up mush and flower power).

This new map is already in the works. It's going to be a DM map, but most likely will be converted into a CTF or BR map as well. So look out in the Beta releases forum in the near future.

I'll also update this thread when I add bot pathing to RetroGamer V2.

SjN: I have thought about making a Sonic map before. Maybe I will make one someday.

There will be no Zelda elements in the new map I'm working on, because it will strictly be based on Mario Bros.

However, there is already a great map out ther called DM-HyruleCastle, and the person who made it did a really good job. It is an exact replicate (except in 3D) of Hyrule castle from Zelda: A Link to the Past.

If you've already played it and want more Zelda stuff, maybe my wife and I can collaborate on a Zelda map together.

Thanks for the Tipp! I'll look for it :D

A Zelda Pack would be nice, but i would make a Poll first ;)

When will you Release a new Beta?

A beta release for the new Mario map is not very close but not very far away...maybe in about two weeks. I've spent so much time on making textures and static meshes from scratch, that the layout of the map seems neglected and not up to par. I want to make this map look as nice and nostalgic as possible, and still have very good gameplay elements.

Here's a preview of the new, higher poly static meshes I've designed for it...

Im going to start on the Zelda (OT) map :) We were thinking (Evil and myself) about doing a whole Nintendo map pack.
(Super Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy... still thinking about the others)

how does that sound?

Sounds sweet, I would love to see more NES and classic console gaming maps like this. They just have a certain nostalgic feel to them. AWSOME map BTW. A zelda map would be SWEET, as I am a Zelda Freak.

That sounds like an awesome idea, Sky. You should do it.

I have (finally) completed a beta version the new map I've been talking about, and have released it under this thread:

http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=474511

Sometime soon, I'll get around to fixing the dumb-ass bots in RetroGamer V2.

Updated the map, and download link for it (top of thread).

Please note, that this is a new, updated version of the map that you should download and replace version 2.0 with. The new version 2.1 fixes what most people complained about - stupid bots that kill themselves because they don't know where to go. Other changes have also been made. The playability and fun factor of the map has greatly improved.
