I have a pathway with pipes underneath (you don't touch them) If I turn off collision for all the pipes and add a blocking volume around them instead, will it help optimization? Because I know the engine has to calculate the collision for all the meshes.

As i understand it, collision is only calculated when a projectile/player/karma/etc impedes on the object, which would mean it wouldnt mattered unless something touches it.
If there is no way of being able to touch the pipes with the walkway above, i dont see there being a noticeable performance boost.
Im sure angel will provide a more detailed answer and make me sound incoherant and horribly belgian :(

You dont need to add a blocking volume around the pipes if they are under a walkway and you will never touch them.

that link will sort you out.
