View Full Version : Epic, Whats it going to take for you to fix the sound in this game?!?

It's been out what? 6 months?
The game is advertised as "Sounds best on a SB Audigy 2 ZS" So at first I thought it was my sound card. got the Audigy 2 ZS.
Problem still is there.
I'm sick of hearing sounds that are NOT THERE, or are through walls on the other side of the map like they are right next to me!
Examples include hearing people fireing the shock rifle as I walk past the pickup, but there is no one there fireing it. Above nor below me, and impossible to be through a wall in that case. It's like the sound just keeps playing randomly.
And of course, hearing rockets Blow up right behind you, turn...and no rockets blew up behind me. Theres no one there, no one visible around me at all.
So PLEASE fix the error of sounds playing without a source, or through walls like they are right next to you!
(And if this helps at all)

the problem is that epic lately tends to instead of fixing the essantial leaks, they add new water-splash effects within their patches. :(

The sound isn't great but it's a lot better than you described. The interesting part of your post is when you mention you got the SB Audigy 2 ZS because the ads told you to. ;)

ut99 allready had a great sound engine. it was unneeded to go away from it and not even include it back to 2k3/4 as option.

And while you're fixing these issues, Epic, you might want to make it so we can hear sounds that actually do have sources. Go back to UT's sound system - assuming it's possible with so much of the geometry now being constructed with meshes.

Well, it sounds more realistic, but in 1on1, it's harder to hear your opponent. I have a Live! 5.1 card.

I don't have any of those problems. :D
But then again I don't own an overpriced sound card like the Audigy 2 ZX. :D
My 7.1 speaker Hercules Fortissimo III does great and plays all of the sounds in surround sound.
Wonder if it might not be the sound card or drivers. :D

not only direction but also distance.

Exactly. Totally ruins a good deal of 1on1 play.

I agree with the original poster. This game is listed as a featured game on the creative site for EAX3/EAXHD, but if you enable it VoiceIP stops working. I'm very p*ssed at the lack of support for advertised features of this game, when we get water splashes and a new vesion of the game coming out with additional ONS stuff.
Fix the things that are supposed to work. EAX and VOICEIP.

We'd rather not fix important gameplay features like rockets and flak that do no damage, and a broken sound system. We feel that focusing on things like water splashes is a much better idea. - Epic Games

Or that one in Corrugation. Man that puddle is tiny - I'd never even notice it, if it didn't engulf half the map's lower level. :p
Still, I agree. Epic, fix the **** that needs fixing, and leave the cool little touches for afterwards.

I do have a Labtec's speaker set with two normal speakers and one subwoofer.
Like this :
[] « subwoofer or whatever it is
normal speaker » [] [monitor] [] « normal speaker[Edit] :
I put on the H/W 3D + EAX (the downmost in the dropdown list) and I didn't notice any problems. :confused:
The problems with that? Or plain H/W 3D without EAX :bulb:
[Edit] :
Slightly O/T, but I'll ask...
Which ones of these sound settings might affect gameplay :
[ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem]

Use3DSound=True
UseDefaultDriver=True
CompatibilityMode=False
MaxEAXVersion=255
UsePrecache=True

UseVoIP=True
UseVAD=False
UseSpatializedVoice=False
SpatializedVoiceRadius=100000.000000

And what does "Rolloff", "TimeBetweenHWUpdates", "VolumeScaleRec", "DopplerFactor", "UseSpatializedVoice" and "UseVAD" do? :confused:

The one thing that sticks out most when I'm playing Onslaught is that you hear the Manta's twin hover engines moving about right next to you. After scanning the entire vicinty for the suspected Manta (i.e. at all heights/levels) and finding nothing, I continue the game puzzled as ever.
Next time it happens you think that your sound effects are 'crying wolf' so you ignore it, only this time you get your head clipped off :bulb: It makes me go back to playing UT2004 with no sound (computer speakers OFF) and the music of my choice (from the Hi-Fi).

One of the few things that had me scratching my head when the game first came out was that when I ran through water I'd hear the sound slightly behind me, as if the sound were generated at the point I first made contact with the water, and I was rapidly moving past it. While this may be sort of realistic, in practice it always made me think someone had snuck up behind me, or dropped down from above just behind me. I remember turning around a lot, at first, looking for the opponent that wasn't there. In life, if you step in water, you hear i from below or slightly ahead, since you never run faster than the soundwaves you create. Somehow, in the game, the sound hangs out where it began, and you run past it.
I have to agree that I think Epic needs to seriously consider how to imporve their sound engine. Too many people have problems with it, especially EAX. And, though we all remember the great positional sound in UT99 fondly, EAX support sucked in that game, too.
Now that the graphics wars seem to have an end in sight, game companies would be wise to focus on sound with the attention to detail they've previously mostly lavished on graphics. I think the atmosperic and spatial effects that could be created are well worth it. Right now, sound tech is about where graphics were in 1994. Remember when VGA graphics were king? There's so much more that could be done.

This is not UT99. Period. The engine has changed, and so did the sound. Expecting that the entire sound code would just have to be copied and pasted from UT99 to UT2kx implies some cluelessness.

theese "this is not ut" quotes really are getting old. fact is that when u make a sequal to a game, you expect it to be technically better than the first part and not worse.

Your expectations are one thing (a thing about which I don't care, btw). But claiming that the change in the sound system was "unneeded" is another. If you have no idea what you are talking about, consider being a little less vocal.

if you dont care, then dont start a debate with me.
the majority of the people do agree, that the ut99 sound system was better than the 2k3/4 sound system when it comes to directional indication of the sound sources. i dont say they could have just "copied the old code" into 2k4, but they should have based it on the same mathematical base, thus it turned out to work alot better. and even so this problem could have been noticed through all the beta testing before the final release, i do agree that this is not a quick thing to fix and that i might need additional time. what turns me and other people off is just that epic does not confirm this being an issue ( like the mouslag problem many ppl experience too ) and instead add better water-splash effects within the patches.

08-16-2004, 10:16 AM
Yeah, right. The development team was advised not to fix anything until the water-splash effects were working.

Ok now that you have HW EAX on go turn to a server with Voice IP and listen when people communicate. YOu won't hear them or you'll hear a blip or bleep here or there, which basically makes all the team play modes like ONS, TDM, BR, AS useless when eax is turned on.

I doubt Epic employees have enough time to scour these forums for bug reports, you'd be spending your time better by joining the UT2004mods list and when a new beta patch is announced then download that patch and if the problem isn't fixed then post about it in the mods list.
You will have a MUCH better chance of being recognised if you do that however make sure your mails are to the point. (flaming/spam is not well tolerated in the mailing lists)

i am pretty sure that epic does very well know that people are experiencing theese issues. its there since ut2003 and yes, epic employes do read theese forums. drsin even stated once they actually read almost every thread. even so that is a bit back and it seems nowerdays they spend less time reading the forums, again, this issue does not just exist since a few weeks but since ut2003 and has people has been reporting about it exactly since then.
but having epic know that people dislike how the sound engine currently works, does not autmaticly implie that they are actually confirming and fixing it.

Nearly all of the bug reports I sent in to the mailing list were fixed and I've seen many more simple problems posted here that have not been fixed....They might well read the forums but I'm certain that if you post about this on the mailing list there is a better chance of it getting fixed.
