I asked whether or not square soft has ever foxed someone in the tidus model thread and no one seemed to know, you sure you guys won't get legal letters for this?
Whichever, I wish you luck, I always wanted to see a FF style tactical game using this engine. I'm sure you'll be having fun with the spell animations, just don't make them too long, k? :)
You know there's already a chrono trigger remake that's pretty far along, right?

Yeah, that's Chrono Trigger: Resurrection. Their project is different, they are only doing 10 demos of certain parts of the game, we are doing a full remake with added features. They are also coding their own engine.
As for the legal ramifications...I believe this is considered a "parody" of the original, or like fan art. As long as we don't directly rip any of their original content, we should be okay. And if Square tells us to stop, well then we will stop. CT:R went to E3 and SquareEnix didn't seem to have problems with them.

I could be wrong, but I believe the CT Resurrection team is made up of the people who worked on the original game. They're just doing it for fun, and Square won't sue them, but they'd probably sue you. I would love to see this though. Please make the whole game and then when it's released, they can tell you to stop, but oops, it's done :)

I've played CT until the part where yuou came to the stone age and you were supposed to meet the cat girl. Arylisa? anyway, I escaped from a battle agains tthe monsters she was supposed to kill after a while, and thus I was never able to see her. I never played further. :( It's very annoying to get stuck and I didnt want to start ALL over again. thus I quit. I loved it while I played it though, had a major time! I would love to see this remade into a game. About Square seuing you, I am unsure about this being legal. If i were you I would simply ASK them if you were allowed to make a fan project of remaking CT.

I can tell you now with certainty that Square will issue a C&D as soon as they find out about this. I was part of the UnrealFantasy team (till we disbanded :( ) and our project lead had been in contact with Square about using their Intellectual Property - they gave a very definitive 'NO to that, so we had to think up new names for anything that could be related to Final Fantasy (phoenix down, echo screen and every other 'branded' FF asset). Calling this Chrono Trigger is the first step towards a guaranteed cease and desist order from Square, everything else after that will just add to the offences.
Square are incredibly anal about anyone using their IP for mods and such, so you have been warned :)

Most companies are it's how they protect their property form somoene else making crap based off it (too bad this does not prevent the comanpy fomr making crap based on it a la Tomb Raider ;))

What? Where did you get the idea that the guys at CT:R worked on the original game? LMAO, no! They're just fans like us...albeit really, really talented fans.

I will just say that I hope you can get away with doing this - chronotrigger is a kickass game and I'd love to play an updated version like this :)
edit: I'm putting my hope in the fact that it's simply a remake, and Square might allow it because it's not going to (in theory) lose them any money on their own games. Our's (Unreal Fantasy) was an entirely new game, with fairly original ideas, so it's pretty obvious Square weren't going to like that, as it could easily be seen as competition (especially the fact that it would be downloadable for free). You just have to hope that they don't have any plans to update it themselves ;)
If this succeeds...... I'll be putting my own biggest dream into operation, and start recruiting for people to help remake Final Fantasy 7 :D
Second Edit: Well, after reading through the forums for CT:R, I've noticed that they don't actually have 'permission' for this. This thread caught my attention:
http://www.xsorbit2.com/users/chronotrigger/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1085667403
It seems they haven't been noticed yet :) You have to remember though, that this is a demo, not a full game, so Square may say it's ok, but then go and stomp over some other team because they're making a full game remake.
*Me continues hoping :)

Well I should hope you continued with the mod and simply renamed the items yes?
I hope so because I'd like to see original content in that genre. It seems like every other thread in the ideas forum is an adaptation of an existing property and I don't really understand it...
(said the man whos first model is a remake :P )

I was wrong. I got mixed up because there was some kind of CT project involving the original developers that there were pictures of, and I don't think it was a public project, it was just for their enjoyment. I wish I could find it now. Ah well. Like I said, make the whole thing then sneak it out

Mr_Caravaggio - That was the plan, but things kinda just.... stopped. I'm keeping my hopes up that maybe things will start up again at some point, but for now it's not happening :( You could bug LegionnaireJoe about it, he was project lead ;) He's already said he's busy with other things though (and I haven't seen him around here in some time).

I'm glad to see that people here are so excited about our mod. If you love CT, and know anything about Unreal modding, please come apply in our forums. We have a good team, but we need more people!

hi, I like it. I like it a lot. I like final fantasy 7 a lot. I really do. I wish someone would ressurect it. the characters are by far the best.... I've gotta grab the advent children DVD when it comes out. perhaps if enough people bought it, squaresoft might realize that they could make more money by bringing the characters back.

Well, as it happens I'm working on various assets at the moment, mainly as a bit of fun that I have no particular intention of releasing, but you never know, they might find a use yet ;) I think I might start working on the world map soon, including Transition Teleporters that will load up the actual locations (in a seperate map file obviously) when you walk into them on the world map :D

Lets Just Hope all goes well and these anal company reps dont pull the plug on it, I mean its not like people are trying to make money based uponthe game and besides for those owners of the original game it whould be like a resurection , cuz im pretty sure people whould play the original game again, I know I would, and by the way I thought the SNES version was better with the exception of the movie scenes, SNES did not have to take 4 ever to load, N E How I think it whould be awsome for something like this to be made. Thanx for listening

"We're not making a profit on their game, we're promoting it."Whoops, even professionals aren't immune to faulty logic.
I'd recommend renaming your project and everything Chrono-related in it, you're heading on the same path as a dozen other mods/sites/etc that have gotten cease and desists.

this may be true, but i just want to get it off my chest that I dont understand all the fuss with the copyrights from their respective owners. It's not like it is a commercial project. The way I see it is that projects like this are free commercials for the original product.
The only persons that suffer under all that are the fans imo, but ok.. that's how the world works I guess :)

From the Wiki (http://www.unrealwiki.com/wiki/Mod_Copyright):
"But we are not making profit."
It doesn't matter. The owner still retains the right to decide what is done with their material, and they even legally have to protect it in order not to create a precedent that may cause them to lose it when it really hurts. (And they still potentially lose money due to your mod even if you don't make any. But regardless of that, "damage" is not a concept that comes in where copyright is concerned.)

Yeah, the latest example that comes to mind is the System Shock 2 remake for the Doom 3 engine. They got a C&D notice from EA, but it only concerned the name and trademarks from the game. EA encouraged them to keep making the mod though, just with their own name. So they called it Sapphire Scar and kept going.
