Comments: Went a little crazy this weekend, did this model in 3 hours yesterday. My bf keeps bugging me to make a spider invasion mod. I keep telling him no, but I made this for him instead. This render is 36,484 polys, so right now there's no way I could make it a usable player model. Still thinking about it.

Well...lots of polys it may be, but it does look nice. I personally think it would work better as a vehicle.

Seems like a buttload of wasted polys for it to end up that high, prolly wouldnt be that hard to make it low poly, alot of the detail could be done on textures....

Wow, its like a Genetically Engineered War-Spider of some sort, hehe, that was a funny as hell story btw. Very nice model, but isnt it possible to make him an additional NPC in invasion?

As usual Angel, you have outdone yourself. Although a note comes to mind, the body is unusually plain... You may want to add something to it, such as some lines where it's put together or just about anything. I find it truly odd that it's that many polies. Really shouldn't be so high.

Well, each leg has what looks like a high-poly sphere on it and there are two very smooth and non-jagged curved pipes on the spider's body. Lowering the polys of these (or removing them entirely) would greatly reduce the polycount.

Perhaps pointing out the obvious, but ditch the spheres on the kness and also those fangs. Will look better and your polys will plummet.

I was just screwing around when I made that model, so polycounts weren't my concern at all. Most of it comes from the roundness of the bolts and eyes, as well as the pipes on the body. I started reducing it last night and have already gotten it down to 16,000. My goal is around 3000, halfway in between a Manta and a Leviathan. Then I'll start rigging and animating it.

I 'ope it's going to be retextured: looks pretty crappy as it is. I'd ditch the fairy light face too as it defeats the menacing appearance somewhat?
Can't help but feel this is, for the most part, a 'I have a boyfriend!' kinda deal. That's lovely; good work!

Wow, that's a really nice-scary spider, good work!
I like the idea with the vehicle, how about this:
You often seem to make maps with special scripts/mutators (like these cool ghosts in CTF-Phaseshift), so how about making a ONS Map with this spider as a vehicle? You could for example make two sides, one the humans with the normal vehicles and the other side with those spider vehicles (of course the spiders should differ in weapons...) Perhaps this is much coding and stuff, but I think it could be worth the affort...
It could also fit into an AS-Map...

Just found this over at Mr. Evil's Realm (http://come.to/MrEvil). Seems he has some kinda spider thingy in progress also.
The Arthromek, multipedal tank (yes, it has been modelled rather closely after the Ghost in the Shell tank). Not skinned yet.

Textures are fine, maybe just tweak the lower part of the legs, so it shines, make it look more.. metal-like.
except for that, i cant wait to try it out.

About the ONS, you dont have to make an ONS map to include that as a vehicle... VCTF and AS are also included with vehicles.
Just two more ideas:
2 people drive this vehicle.
First person:
Driver, Fire: HISSSSSSSSSSSSS (honk or whatever)
ALT FIRE: Grapple Hook
can "run" over people.
Second Person:
Leech (:haha: ), Fire: moves front legs (left, right, left, right) in order to hit.
Alt Fire: Laser beam ^^
Just my 2 cents of thoughts^^

As far as texturing goes, to me, the legs and actual body of the thing are just plain ugly. I like the detail on the joints and the columns by which the legs are attached, but the rest seems rather unfinished. I can't help but feel a simple glossy black and red tech theme would serve the concept far better, rather than the confused colouring it currently sports. Certainly as a 'player model', I'm afraid I don't think it of high standard.
As a vehicle, I can see the potential: impalling people with the pointy legs could be fun, as would some sort of jumping ability (obviously not so much that it compromises map design, but enough to scare the bejesus out of me just before a leg skewers my pointless life ;D). Of course, it'll have to be fast too, and considering its design, it's also going to be pretty maneuverable - perhaps 'stunted' weaponry is in order?
Mr. Evil's GitS tank model looks great: a far more impressively stylized concept. Looks like it'll be a slow, high-powered team vehicle though, so it need not be 'competition' in the sense that it's the same thing.
I 'ope I'm being a little more constructive. ^_^

I gotta agree with the guy, a red and black motif or a slightly rusted steel machine motif would have looked much better.

EDIT: another thing to be noted, first driver shouldnt "run" over people if you thought about that, he should be able to chop 'em up with those things in his mouth :D

I think poor young Hydro is a bit too excited. I must be the only person not particularly impressed with this...
Texturing is fairly dull and bland (but you've said you won't change that, so moving on.) As for the model, it's pretty Sentinal-like, which is nice. The fangs look out of place and tacked on and the legs look blunt, rather than sharp and painful looking.
As for the concept itself, it's pretty decent. You'd have to balance it well though. You know, all-terrain? Ceilings? Distance and melee weapons? Speed? Far jumping capabilities? Things like that, you know.
But good luck with it.

Great model!
First, as some people have suggested, it DOES have 8 "legs" if Rachel keeps the two front "blade" things... and with the way the body is shaped, it's just more of a daddy long legs than, say, a tarantula.
Second, here's a few suggestions:
instead of grappling hook and jumping, why not code it to be able to walk on surfaces at any angle?
if it's hit by, say, a tank shell and falls on its back from a wall or ceiling, the player is ejected and has to turn it back on its feet like other vehicles.
so the primary weapon is a red (fingerquote)la-zer(/fingerquote)? secondary weapon could be spidermines coming out the back end...

Anyway, it'd be so cool if it was an invasion monster, like on the final round or something. Vehicle is good too tho.

we do have cars, hovercraft, aircraft, boats, jumpboots, but we dont have a vehicle yet that can walk on any hard surface at any angle... this looks like a prime candidate for it.

Forget the horn. The grappling hook is a must. Primary fire: Make it spit bio goop. Have it where it can walk straight up walls and on the ceiling. Just like a spider.
