Hi im running a linux box on OC3.
The problem is that the hardware of that server is not very good (and i can't change that!). If i have more than 14ppl on the server with gametype ONS i have 99% CPU usage. Its really ****ing much for a dedicated server but i know that the ut2k4 engine needs much server side operations.
So my question is: are there a few tricks to reduce load/optimize it?
help will be great

I havent tried to run an ONS server yet, but from what I understand that figure sounds normal. I dont think many people out there can run a 14 person Onslaught match without the 99% load. Its a pretty intensive gametype.

a xeon 2.8ghz cant run a ONS 16 slot absolutely lag free. it usually runs smooth but occasionally the cpu spikes high enough to cause lag a p3 chip can though (depending on which flavor) , as well as 64 bit amd processors, the fx chips, or the opterons
intels p4 or xeon achitecture is just not efficient with the unreal engine .
Atari's own Public Onslaught Servers lag bad too

16 players ONS server @ opteron is 20-30% cpu load, so just get a decent server :p

what speed opteron , and is there anything else utilizing that chip besides the ut2k4 server app ?

So to sum up:
Don't expect phenominal performance for an ONS server of more than 12 people unless you went out and bought the Athlon64 chip to run in your server.
Now if only I had the 800 to get the new FX-53... ;)

i can't buy any new hardware cuz it is a rented server (the reason why rented is very easy its not possible to pay for a OC3 private line)
so the only think i can do is to optimize it...

well if it's a rented server, you should look at www.servermatrix.com, they have cheap high quality servers. as far as the gameserver itself, you shouldn't be running 99% cpu, sounds like a problem with extremely bad hardware :\

in order to get 14 lag free on a server from server matrix, he would have to get a xeon of 2.8ghz or a p4 fo 2.8ghz or more
based on my experience , not really all that cost effective

i had ONS server of my own. it was lag free even with 18 players, but CPU usage was 85-95 so i used it 16 players.
AMD XP 1600+ , 1024Mt DDR.
We have now outsider server, and it gets laggy sometimes (ping increase to 30 -> 150). It is P4 2.6Ghz.
So is Unreal engine so AMD optimized :)
