Good map, but the bases seem a disproportionately small for UT2004 style game play, and some of the caves could have been a bit wider. All in all it's a good map though.

[Edit]: ****, I just played it again, and i found a bad problem for online play, that will make game play unfair. One of the red spawn points is on blue side on the ramp that has the dule caves.

Ah crap, you're right - I missed that playerstart when changing the team numbers.

About the scale - the entire map is scaled by exactly 25% - I turned the original map into one big static mesh and used it as a reference while making it :) IMO the scaling works really good...

Have to fix that playerstart though.

Great map Spoondog, it captures the feel and gameplay of the original very well but with much better visuals

Also, if you fix the playerstart bug note that the platform near the U damage (red base) is not completely smooth to take when you are walking, you need to jump a little which is a bit annoying imo.

Horrible, horrible map... The original was a blast, but this ones just pure ugly. You haven't even textured the terrain and cliffs LIKE terrain, so you get a bucket load of repeating via the textures. On the surface, its bad but you can live with it, but on the VERY ugly rock faces, which, BTW, could of been done a lot better, its just un-forgettable.

Also, as been said, there are a few areas that really need work.

And if it was me re-making this, i was of re-modeled the entire base structure like UT99 only higher detail, not made it out of brush work and make it look... Well, like UT99...

Also, the lighting is just disgusting. Its not natural in any way, doesn't reflect its enviroment, and some parts are just glowing randomly...

A very average looking remake of a very classic map. Sorry, not for me.

I don't know what the dude above has been smoking/injecting. I really like this. Have you fixed the playerstart bug yet on the version I downloaded an hour or so ago?

Great remake, and the scaling seems pretty cool for me

legacy-Hampel
06-10-2004, 10:38 AM
oh well, gave it a short play an I have to say that it is not that perfect as it could be! several corners and places are way too dark and on the other hand there are corners that are too bright and washed out!
the green floor texture fits not right in, it's too coarse imo! also the scale of the two castles and the caves is not in relation to the UT2004 movement! they are too small!
gameplaywise I think it's still that lavagiant thing and of course there is potential, but I'm missing too much atm

you should have let me betatest the map first :up:

Apart from the niggles mentioned above I feel its a bit of a missed oppertunity, dont get me wrong, I love the map & will be keeping it till the next version comes out, but it's lacking polish and feels a bit rushed.

For instance, The lava work between the bases seems a bit over scaled and looks kinda bad. There are no paths on the walkable surfaces, you know those you can create with vetrex blending.

legacy-Metalslave
06-10-2004, 03:35 PM
I think an *updated* version would have been more interesting. More detail, static meshes, better texturing, bigger bases, etc. It's good, but I keep thinking of what it could have been.

legacy-unXceptable
06-10-2004, 04:44 PM
Nice map but I don't see any mapper-like skills in this.. the caves and terrain look crappy and just put together without any love for detail.. no own style implemented.. consequently, the nice words of all the users should not be for you but for the original author of LavaGiant..
Yes, same opinion as Gavavva and Metalslave..

Actually, I hated Lava Giant 2. I just want to see this updated to match the capabilities of UT2K4, ie a bit bigger and more pleasing visuals.

If all I wanted was the original, then I would play it. I still have the CD here somewhere. This just feels like a missed opportunity.

legacy-anarkist

The irony is hilarious, people cry out for less meshes, more UT style gameplay, the moment they get a near perfect map like this they complain that they want more meshes because not enough 'mapping-skill' has gone into it. Of course the moment he adds more meshes you'll all complain that its snaggy and doesn't run very well.

mapping skills in ut2k4 do not depend on the number of meshes, but on their style and their use inside the map..

I liked Lava Giant 2. the only things I didn't like was the fact that the base layout was the same at each base and the ion cannon was too hard to reach. I like having nonsemetrical bases, it creates diversity in game play, and an option for the player to choose which way to defend. At least for maps like Lava Giant anyway

My thoughts exactly - can only please half the people at any one time, unfortunately.

All the comments about it "could've had extra detail or be remade like this... no own style implemented blah blah" etc - yes, it could've... but then it's just not like the original and the other half of the people would be saying its not like LavaGiant anymore... see what I'm saying? :) If I'm going to put months of effort into making a good looking original map I'll do it on one of my own maps, not on a remake. And I do expect XceptOne to get the credit, not me - I just brought it to UT2004 in something better than a straight BSP port like many of the old maps are done.

It's UT99 Lavagiant for those fans, but looking slightly more detailed - just like Face was remade, and Peak. Don't get me wrong - I am aware it could be a whole lot different, I just didn't want it to be, and I still don't.

There'll be an updated version with the fixed playerstarts and any other bugs, such as the one Syrtis mentioned (if I can find where you mean) - but not for a week as I'm heading back to New Zealand for the week.

legacy-dinwitty
06-10-2004, 10:29 PM
indeed, when it's meant to be a solid remake of the original.

when you want to modify it beyond what the original is, just look at all the face modifications on UT99, and have fun.
(check my site for a good selection, some poor, some good, some really excellent)

who says you cant have just one version of it.....

you can please them all... :D

I’ll try to be more specific.
I was talking about the bridge that crosses the lava from the lower terrain to the cliff (the one near the U damage, red side); this platform is a bit too high and you can’t take it without jumping (the step is too big for players who get stuck on it).
Minor pb but if you fix some stuff...
Hope this helps :)

edit: also, there are some collision pbs with window an door static meshes at the blue base, you can get through some of them.

A splendid remake. It is almost exactly what a remake should be - it retains the look and the feel of the original, and permits *exactly* the same playing style. It is an update/enhancement. The original's rough polygonal edges have been smoothed, and it hasn't been cluttered with needless static meshes.

One minor suggestion: The top of the mountain is extremely dark - in the original it was quite bright, but on this new version it is kind of difficult to see the terrain.

What we need now is a mutator that can give us a ladder of UnrealTournamentClassic maps, and the inclusion of the Ripper (ducks).

I really want all the Classic maps, with all the original characters, too! But prettier.

legacy-Thesto Neroses
06-11-2004, 01:44 AM
Oh, and another thing - the topography of the mountain seems to be much flatter than in the UT99 version - dunno if this really affects gameplay, but I thought it warranted mentioning. :noob:

Sppondog,

Nice remake, you've captured the feel of the original IMO. There are a couple of things that I think could be better:

1. Some of the textures are very low-res. I know it's meant to be retro but they look out of place.

2. The map is a little too dark.

only thing that i'm not keen on is it looks too ut'ish. i was exspecting some custom meshs in there and stuff and those lava walks don't look too cool, they look like BSP though i could be wrong;) .

Though its better than CTF-Magma and will be given a spot on my h/d.
