It took a while longer to complete but it made it just in time for the Make Something Unreal phase 3 submissions. The image above links to the UT2004 model itself, the thumbnails below to samples of the animations (DivX). It was a lot harder to get the motion right at the required speed for this one due to the very constrainted setup she has with the pistons and short hind legs, but I'm very pleased with how she moves around in game.

This is a remake of the Quake3 character (http://home.wanadoo.nl/bastiaan.schravendeel/Magdalenapimp1.jpg) which was the first project Jason and I did. Since that was an extremely fun project to work on we both wanted to do a remake with our newly aquired skills and the abilities of the suberb Unreal Engine. She's built out of 3789 polygons, one 1024 texture, one 512 texture and 64 bones. It wasn't meant to be the model directly following Effigy - we wanted to do something else inbetween - but time kind of restricted me from from doing another project.

I hope you guys like what we've done to her, as always, let me know what you think! :)

Wow.. I want this model. I can't seem to download it yet for some reason, no servers come up off FilePlanet for me.. (?) But the download count is going higher... I'll edit this when I see a server.. any suggestions ?

Know this model since it came out for Q3A and it was a keeper on my harddrive until i removed the whole game. This is an amazing remake.Best wishes for the contest! :up: :up: :up:

nice model, although the skin seems very raw and scary... perhaps you could use the patch tool and clear up that part of the beasts arms: the metal that seems to be on the arm and neck... it's a little.... OMG it's SCARY!!! :P

1st Place hands down from what I've seen. Amazing.... everything. Superior work guys, keep it up again.

I like your model, though the team colors don't fit it well. You probably should have pulled a Nali cow on it. What i mean by that is made the turret/gun holder the team color insted of the whole character. Good Work though ;) :up:

Thanks a lot for all the comments! First of all, Effigy for UT2004 will be released very soon, I already have a working version done, I just need to make some screenshots and do some final checks before I send the model off to polycount/fileplanet. Just a little more patience please. :)

PoObeard: You can as long as you keep all the files, including the readme intact and included, and put the appropriate credits on the download site. Let me know where I can find it if you ever put it together!

If you think it's unfair that I join in on the contest because I have more experience that's fine, but I've probably spent more time than anybody on getting the UT2003/4 model support to work properly (outside of epic/DE). Saying I do not give a crap about the community is a bit unfair.

I don't work in the industry though...

Question: since you seem quite talented at model making, is there any way you can build/convert the old Jarhead model, or the Chaos UT Chrek for 2004?

The Chaos guys aren't sure if they can manage a 4 legged beastie, but your mag is almost 4 legged!

Someone suggested using the spidermines skeleton, and building off that.

Does anyone else have this problem? IT's got both the ragdoll and if you have disabled that it's got all four death animations to take it over. I really haven't heard anyone else with this complaint...

Bort: Wooops. Thanks for the heads up. To be honest, I don't play UT2004 myself, I just make character models for it and test it - I simply forgot the whole flag was also a tagged attribute such as the weapon. I've never sene UT2004 CTF. :)

Angel Mapper: I've done some character contract work in the past, but I just got out of highschool last year and tried college this year - I haven't really had time to work anywhere. I'm not sure whether I'll be working in the game industry either.

Jesus: She looks like a pimp, of course! Actually she fits in the vehicles quite well. She's pretty big but not compact at all, most of her size is in the limbs, so she was easy to fold up (unlike effigy, fat bastard...):

I have never been much of a "mutant" player model fan, but as an artisitc person I recognize that skin texture work is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!
I am very impressed by the dark to highlights on the exposed muscle section (lower left corner of skin flat).
How long did it take to make that whole skin?

the texture work is unreal.

any chance you could post some untextured wire-frame shots? i wouldnt mind seeing how that thing is put together. i'm studying modeling and animation myself and i'd be interested in seeing your mesh.

Thanks very much SkullboX. I was going to include all files that came with each model but put them all into the correct folders, System, Textures, Help, etc. I was also going to rename any Readme.txt files to the associated model and put them in the Help folder and system file changes for the pack would also be put in an additional text file for ease of installation. Full credits will also be given where ever I can put them.:up:
If anyone was to object to this method I'll just put all the zips together and do it that way.

The biggest issue I've got is whether to include UT2003 models with no vehicle animations. Hopefully there won't be too many of these and not many authors to nag about compatability.;) Anyway, if it ever comes together, I'll let you know.

For your next model, how about a Space Pirate?

First of all. Great work. This model is a masterpiece. I have a modelling question for ya. What is your technique to minimize the deformation around the arms and legs during animation? I am using MS3D to model with so I am not manipulating animation yet. An initial test model I worked on had severe stretching in the back of the arms. Your model for instance stretches a little but looks very natural like skin would normally look.

The stretching is caused simply because of bones moving away and to another, so unless you animate a robot, this is supposed to happen. The reason my model deforms better than anything you could do in Milkshape is because milkshape does not support weighted verts, like higher end packages (I use max).

The vertexes around organic area's that deform are weighted to multiple bones. For example, while the verts in the center of the forearm are simply linked to the fore arm bone itself, those around the elbow are weighted to both the upper and the lower arm, so they're affected by the rotation of both, making it smoother and appear more 'realistic'. Milkshape unfortunatly does not support this the last time I checked.

The guy that runs skincity already contacted me about this, and he is supposedly putting it up there so you can expect it soon. Contrary to popular belief fileplanet is a free server, you cna choose to pay for an account so you have priority access, but if you use a free account you can download it off the public servers, you might have to wait in line for that though.

Thanks again. I'll post Effigy for UT2004 (although less elaborate) here when it's fully ported and hosted on fileplanet.

Nope, not really. I managed to cram her in more or less, and it looks cool in the Scorpion and the bugass truck, but it clips through the manta with its tail. I suppose it's not too bad in actual gameplay, but bear in mind that model was created without knowing there would be vehicles in UT2004, as it was designed and created for UT2003.

I've gotta' say that Magdalena has my all-time favorite death animation in Q3, though.

Could you try shrinking the model down enough to fit in the vehicles better?

I just tried this out last night. Really good job.

The only problem I have with it is that the red team skin is too red. I like how the blue skin is a "softer" blue, and not really that harsh. However the red really sticks out too much.

Good job though!

Your current model is incredible ... simply amazing. Just wondering if Effigy is ready yet? I know you ported it but I haven't been able to find it online ANYPLACE. Thanks and please continue down this path. I swear that you are as good as, if not better, than quite a number of paid professionals.

Chris Ollis got a job at Codemasters (Toca Race Driver 2 is the project he just completed)... he made all the Superhero skins, Homer, Lara Croft, etc. ... and it was partially due to his work for UT. You should be able to get a gig pretty qucikly once the right people see this model and also Effigy. Good luck with what appears to be a promising future.

It's a wonder why Epic doesn't ship at least 3 or 4 such creatures with UT2KX. The "nightmares" look like bunny rabbits compared with Maggie and Monsta (another amazing horror mnodel). Maybe Epic will take a cue from such monstrosities and hire you (and others of course) to make other wordly creature models ... they should! Maybe EA will want you.

Speaking of Chris Ollis, I wonder if he's going to update the homer models for UT2004? I tested them once, and they don't work with vehicles, and I think are missing teamskins.

Thanks for the kind words! Effigy is indeed done and has been submitted to polycount and I'm waiting for a mirror on fileplanet. My own webspace died within three days after I pimped magdalena (just the pictures/movies) and has been closed down for the rest of this month.

As for the job, I've gotten some amazing offers already which is great, but at this time I'm not looking for fulltime work. If anything, some part time contract work provided the project is fun. :)

Hey, Skullbox.. have you considered at all changeing Mag's player skin changes from his "skin" to his weapon mount, as someone suggested? Only real downside as he/she/it is now, is he makes a GREAT long distance target as is.

Thanks for the update about Effigy. I knew you were someone to keep an eye on ... maybe you could talk those who have offered you a job into letting you do part-time work. In any event I'll be checking Fileplanet hourly and please keep the rest of us informed about your projects. I think I speak for just about everyone when I say your models really add a major league shot in the arm to the game. I still think Epic should hire you to make all future Unreal monsters. The nightmares just don't cut it as monsters ... not since I've seen your stuff. Everyone ... imagine 7 or 8 creatures like these coming standard with the next release of UT. Doom 3 who? Peace.

As far as the long distant target is concerned... I personally do not play UT2004, and I create the models for the eyecandy, so that's why they're a bit bigger. Effigy was even bigger though I think, especialyl in height.

Skullbox.. the long distant target issue someone raised was NOT the size, but the bright complete skin color change. a bright red or blue target, easy to spot a long distance away.

That's why the solution someone else offered would work out well... making only the gun mount color change. The hit box remains the same size, no matter what character you are using, but very bright full body color changes make you easy prey.

Much as I LOVE Mag, I finally dropped using her after 2 weeks for that very reason.

Everyone ... Effigy is ready over at polycount :D! Thanks again for such FANTASTIC and UNREAL monstrosities. They are quite beautiful in their own horrofic ways ... but I still wouldn't want to get lost in their nightmare worlds ;) ! Hey C44U. The Maynard skin was done for the Quake3 version, which is ugly and animated horribly compared to the UT2004 version. The skins can't be reused at all, so Jason Sallenbach would have to paint a new one and I doubt he's ever going back to the project, I'm sure we'd both much rather move on to a new project instead. :)

you've used auto unwrap.

dont do that.

unwrap it manually - select faces on the model and hit ENTER to planar map them shift them around in the editor and stich them together, then scale them and arange them.

I like this theme of BIO and ROBO put together... Maybe a skin pack should be released with another new model or two of the same genre.

Personally, I think it's best to have team specific colors added for team skins. the only issue I have with Mags, is that the colors are VERY bright, and the entire body changes color, making you an easy target to spot at long distances.

Changing the color of the gunmount would still make team orientation easy to tell, but it would also not make you easier to pick off or spot, because of the entire color change.
