Name: CTF-SavoIsland
Version: 1
Compatibility: UT2004
Description: The lush vegetation, sandy beaches, clear waters, and blue sky cannot hide this island's historical past. Savo Island's involvement during World War 2 means it has already seen plenty of action. Now its ready to see some more.
Comments: Savo Island, a real island and one of the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean, was one of the many islands in Indonesia involved in the Second World War. It was all part of the Japanese offensive during 1941 and 1942. After the attack on Pearl Harbour and Midway, the Japanese moved onto the Solomon Islands, the main battle being at Guadalcanal.
From this, the Commandos 2 (C2) (a strategy/stealth game) scenario was made, where the Commandos had to land on Savo Island and destroy the powerful cannons that the Japanese had built on it. It was one of my favourite scenarios, partly because the level was visually fantastic, and this drew me to making a UT2003/UT2004 version of it.

****. I've left a Jailbreak2004 actor in there, which in CTF does absolutely nothing.
Well, the first thing to do would be to download Jailbreak2004, ;) but I'm just on my way now to remove it and upload a fixed version.
Really sorry about that.:(

The fixed one's online (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=387622). It won't be compatable with 1.0.

I just played the map. Very nice map, but there are a few problems. there are a lot of places on the rocks, and all through out both the streems where a player gets hitched up a lot. Also the ocean water looks like its either going under the island, or there is heavy cloud cover, so you might want to fix that. CTF-Aedes has a good example of ocean water if you want to check it out.

I did struggle to find a decent ocean texture from the standard UT2004 texture packs, and this was the best I could find. I would have been able to see how other maps did oceans if I wasnt a 56ker. I simply dont have the bandwidth to download many maps at all. Most of what I get are official or community packs anyway.
Yeah, the rocks, well, there are a lot because they make a significant difference to the decoration of the map. There is a chance you may get stuck on them, so quite simply dont jump about on them :p. The bots dont even go near rocks at the bases of cliffs, and I've never seen one get stuck.
Thanks for the feedback :)

The bots always use the streems to escape with the flag however, and that was the worst area. would be nice if you could add some blocking volumes so that running up and down the streems would work smoothly.

I tried to download this but when I tried to unzip it, it said invalid compessions thingy... I dunno what could be wrong... I wanna play it so badly...
EDIT: I just downloaded it again and same error...

Hmm, yeah, the streams do have complex collision. There are actually already blocking volumes under the streams, since karma ragdolls could fall through it. I only chose to leave the full collision on because the blocking volumes are very approximate. :)
The bots probably use the streams as the flag escape route because it is the shortest route back to base. I didn't notice this actually, and the AssaultPaths have been set up properly... hmm. :weird:
I just downloaded the map myself, and its fine. It even self-extracted properly. I suggest you get the latest version of WinZip. If that doesnt work, I really dont know what the problem could be. :(

I use the extractor that came with windows XP, and I know it is no problem with it because I downloaded other maps and unziped right...

Its probably because the zip is designed to self-extract. The XP compressor probably cant handle that, so just gives up with an error message. Its almost always best to use WinZip anyway ;)
