Name: DM-CBP2-KillbillyBarn

Version: 1.0 FINAL

Compatibility: UT2004

Description:
"Dear MaryLou, I'm sorry you had to move out to the city to find work. There wasn't much left fer anyone to do 'round here. Miss havin' ya 'round. As ya know, the farm's on its last walkin' legs. It hasn't shed a drop 'round these parts in months. My cornfield's all dried up, burnt to a crisp. The only bit of water left is in the lil' waterin' hole out back and even that's dryin' up. The corn silo's half empty... I'll need to sell the farm if some miracle doesn't happen right soon. MaryLou, I know you don't condone drinkin', but the only thing that's keeping me sane is my 'shine still tucked out in the shed up on the hill. And even then, I ain't sure 'cause... I swear, damn scarecrow out in the field keeps laffin' at me and some flyin' saucer thing blew up my last cow with a purple laser-beam. I gotta go. There's some rough talkin' slackjaws walkin' up the path with guns and they don't look right friendly neither. Must prepare my 12 and my keeper. Love, BillyBob"

Comments:
I created this map specifically for The Community Bonus Pack 2 - Volume 2 (http://planetunreal.com/cbp/). This is the same map as the one in CBP2 Volume 2, available as a separate release.

This map is an instant classic! The theme is original and very well executed; the atmosphere is spot on. The "Yee-haw!" sound clip when you pick up the uDamage is also a nice touch :)

The open-air deathmatch style of play is also a welcome change from the traditional interior maps. The bots seem to handle the map very well; the loft in the barn is a particularly nasty spot to run into them.

Very nice work Teddie. A good looking map that plays well is always a welcome sight ;)

I loved the map...I like the tall grass in one of the little pits there...made it hard to see people when you were in there...the music is icing on the cake...

And the sounds playing in the background are cool too. Mr crow s cool laugh uwaahahahah!! and then theres the radio thingy. It's really immersive it sucks you right in.

Groovy map all the way, too bad I don't play a lot of dm.

If you mean is it very playable, then yeah it is.
If you mean is it meant for high nobbing competitive play, then not really.

It's the best FFA map I've played for a long time, it's meant for fun and it is. Nice work Teddie, atmosphere and lighting are perfect.

KillBillyBarn is a fabulous map. Not just because of its looks, but also because the theme is original and all the small funny little details you put in. And it plays fantastic aswell. Looks and gameplay don't always mix, but in this map, it seems to work out pretty nicely.

lol. Square dancing... Actually, the music... I did it kind of a blend... a blend of blue grass, a little bit of southern blues, and techno... Just because well, it's kind like that with, well, there's the barn... then these high tech weapons, and... well. I had a plan in my head for the music. :)

When you think about it, 80% of all UT2004 maps I've seen are: 1) Egyptian or some similar flavor, 2) underground, 3) in a warehouse, 4) in a spaceship, 5) atop some insanely high buildings, or some combination of the above. They're usually far in the future, with the possibility that they're relics from the ancient past. I can't think of a map that more thoroughly busts out of this mold than Killbilly.

A map like this would've been something of a hit simply because it looks good, is totally different, and has lots of funny touches. Sort of the Monty Python of UT2004 maps. But it's brilliant because it plays well, too. Good paths, good pickup locations, great audible clues (like someone in the silo or going up for the superweapon).

In fact, Killbilly is now one of the two must-demo maps that I use when showing Halo'ers (and others like that) what UT2004 is like. (The other must-show doesn't seem to be too popular, but I enjoy it and it's beautiful: CTF MoonDragon.)

To maximize hilarity in Killbilly, get use the ChaosUT mutator. The sentient mines are outrageously funny and somehow just fit the map! And the medals at the end of the game somehow also fit.

(My only suggestion would be to make the scarecrow and dog destructible. Have them respawn after a while. "Woof, woof, BOOM!")

Ok, I have to jump in here and admit to shooting both myself more than once, and thinking it would have been funny if they had went flying back. :D Are there any maps, or is it possible to have karma objects in multiplayer? Like say barrels that move/roll when you shoot them? or would that just cause problems in multiplayer?

after playing it more...I think it's my favorite map out of all the maps I've played...the bots are incredibly good though...not like aimbot good but like they use all the features of the map...they never get stuck...always moving...get all the weapons and such...

How about this for twisted... When you destroy the dog (takes a certain amount of damage), it blows up like a Redeemer. Eliminate the superweapon on the silo. (Though why would you then want to go up there? Maybe a Keg-o-health?). Maybe add another blow-up like that in another area (cow, etc) and have them spawn at fairly long intervals. (And honor the no superweapons mutator.)

"Woof, woof!" and now I'm thinking, "Better get outta h...", then "BOOM! Megakill".

I think the superweapon on the silo is very balanced, since you're vulnerable getting to it and everyone on the map can shoot at you if you try to use it from there. So this is just a crazy suggestion, but...

hey teddie, I played this ffa with my ons clan about a week ago, I had run through the map map like once before didnt think the gameplay was too solid. But when I played (about 6-8 players) with my clan mates all of which are adept in fragging it was pretty damned cool and I discovered gameplay was very well done for such a barn themed map. GG's :) honestly tho, it was alot of fun playing under the influence. LOL. ok, seriously tho you know where the 100a is? You have some thick grass in there, I just ducked in there and hid with my shock rifle and suprised combo'ed my mates :D loads of fun to be had on this map. not your serious tdm sort of map but still good stuff regardless.

Thanks for your feedback wfolta. Excellent.

Many people want to blow-up my doggie.... Poor little doggie. My buddie Radeon256 used some kind of mutator to stick grenades all over the doggie... he sent me a screen shot. Looks like he's wearing a doggie sweater made of sicky grenades...

poor little doggie.

Like say barrels that move/roll when you shoot them? or would that just cause problems in multiplayer?

What did you shoot? I got lost in the first sentence.

after playing it more...I think it's my favorite map out of all the maps I've played...the bots are incredibly good though...not like aimbot good but like they use all the features of the map...they never get stuck...always moving...get all the weapons and such...

I like when I get to the top of the silo and a bot pops up from the top of the ladder behind me. Scares the doodle out of me.

So this is just a crazy suggestion, but...

lol. All these are great ideas!

Thanks Knives. I lived in Southern Maryland when I was younger so I had some of that drawl in my head. I had a lot of help getting the description just right though. See the credits for my buds who helped me.

GG's honestly tho, it was alot of fun playing under the influence. LOL. ok, seriously tho you know where the 100a is? You have some thick grass in there, I just ducked in there and hid with my shock rifle and suprised combo'ed my mates loads of fun to be had on this map. not your serious tdm sort of map but still good stuff regardless.

Thanks for the great feedback CTFX1. I haven't tried this map drunk yet. I'll try that soon. (Makes a task in Outlook to "Play KillbillyBarn drunk." ;)

I am an Invasion fanboy but of all the maps that I prefer to DM on is KillBilly. I just wish I had a small percentage of the talent you have to at least enable me to turn out one half decent map. ;)

I dont think its simply the fact that the map won all on its own feet but also how much teddie has contributed to the community. That and also this map is revolutionary in its own right. I think the biggest thing is that its fun and creative. He took a hard concept of a farm area and really suceeded in making it a fun map with not the best gameplay mind you but for a farm its pretty good excluding the fact you can camp on the silo and house etc. And besides, I think there is like only one other map in exsistence with a farm theme from ut99 and that was pretty flat. There are also some neat creative cues and gameplay aspects in this map you wont find elsewhere. I was suprised as well that this map won it but regardless I'm happy teddy won, I just cant really think of someone else who deserves it more imo.

I too could have quoted maps that were significantly better in individual areas, Angels Reconstruct, a simple but brilliantly thought out use of triggers for example, but OVERALL Teddies was an inspiration with the originality of its setting and ambience as well as the masterful use of the editor. I can fully appreciate your personal views but I think they are totally off the scale, a professional board of judges can't be that wrong. ;)

Just for the record, put two servers side by side, one with KIllBilly on and the other with Decadence (not a bad map at all!) on and see which would be populated the most? I wouldn't hold my breath to see which one would fill first.

And......... before anyone cares to mention, I AM not a Teddie fan club member (being a relative noob concerning the UT series) I had not heard of him or his prior experience within the community and merely judged him on this example.

Did that have enough clarity? ;)

Its high points to me are all the sounds used in the map. The lighting and the layout are great. I dont know if it shouldve won but its one of my favorite. I like Angel Mappers reconstruct also but this map kicks recontruct's ass. Take out all the sounds in KillbillyBarn and reconstruct beats it. Good job on a well rounded map Teddie.

your mapping style or at least what you did on this map for instance is great and if you applied that to a Halloween map (it's coming up kind of ) I think it would be badass.

I know you might not even consider doing a halloween themed map but I still think you could pull it off great!

Technical skill and visual prowess are what makes a good map, but a great map is made by luck ;) Sometimes, a map just picks up a little extra bit of flair that turns it into a classic.
KillBillyBarn looks good, sounds good, and is as fun to run around in by yourself as it is to frag in. There's a little bit of soul in there, somewhere. Some little touch that makes you like it even if logic is pointing you to a "technically" better map.
If I had the choice I might not have picked it, choosing to adhere to more boring guidelines for judging instead, but it has won and I'm glad it did.

Don't let anyone rag on you, Teddie :D Oh, unless it's me, asking exactly how long a "few days" is :p

As the saying goes "Dont let the buggers get you down" Teddie:)

The map's a wrok of art, and makes a refreshing change from the boring old indoor/outdoor stuff we have come to see throughout UT's existence - with the exception of a few other maps.

Hardcore gamers who theing theyre 1337 will always prefer Grendel Keep or maps like that, but theres a lot of us who get bored with these style maps.

To finish off - keep it up with the weird or off the wall stuff as if you go all "conformist" you'll just get lost in the piles of others.;)

That's how I felt, to be honest. It's a fun-to-look-at, gimicky map, but it's not built for gameplay. I like the funny stuff and all, but I would never play a serious DM match on it. I'm not trying to slam your map Teddie, but it's a map for the casual gamer, not a map for the serious competitive DMers. There's no problem with that though, as most UT players are casual gamers.

It seems as if it was judged on appearance and concept, not gameplay and flow. My 2 cents. :)

Congrats on the win though. :)
