I am planning on upping my bandwidth to 384kbs upload, how many people do you think I can host in a deathmatch game? I can host five without lag @ 128kbs. If that is of any help. And I have a good computer, so don't worry about the computer being the bottleneck.

thanks for ya ****ing time!

CTF servers 6 vs 6 seem best for us.

Yeah Dat Monkey plays CTF all the time, so I might have it go 6vs6 on a couple good CTF maps.

[U/L speed * 1000] / 8 / clientrate = Nominal player load

I have 256 UL, 6000 clientrate, and host 6 ppl.

Thanks, but what I can't understand is why people would say 6-7 ppl without posting why? I can do 5 ppl fine @ 128kbs. Why would I only be able to host 2 more people at best with triple the UL speed?

Please post if you are polling @ the lowest.

is 6000 a good number for any gametype?

Then can you tell me what is a good clientrate for DM, CTF, and ONS?

Start with 7000. It seems to be fine for all gametypes afaik.

I think you should put it at 14 to start off, see if you can load it up with players and experiment.

With Broadband there is always a sweet spot in player count, lets say you get 7 people in, and an 8th joins, everyone laggs like a mother! My guess is your # is 10-12...

I'm a new server admin, how do I set the number?

In your ini file....

[IpDrv.TcpNetDriver]
AllowDownloads=False
ConnectionTimeout=20.0
InitialConnectTimeout=200.0
AckTimeout=1.0
KeepAliveTime=0.2
MaxClientRate=7000
MaxInternetClientRate=7000

Incidentally, you should be able to host about 8 players. Remember, this INCLUDES SPECTATORS. So, you can host 7 ppl and one spec, or 6 and 2 (et cetera).

7000 is likely to cause issues in onslaught (tanks missing turrets, slow turret firing response time. stuff like that ) , and possibly assault, other gametypes should be fine

That's partially true (good point).

But, the default clientrate will result in every home admin running 1v1 servers.

I've played many a onslaught and assault map on my server without problems. But, I have noticed turret issues on other servers (1/3 bolts fire).

so what is the ideal rate for ONS?

i have 6000 on my cable connection..but i limit to 8 players and seem to not have issues..it really is more of a function of player load and upload speed..

If you aren't using the default maps, make sure your visitors download and install the same maps that are on the server first. Post a list on your website somewhere. Same for any 3rd-party mutators.

Be sure that they are installing the EXACT same map, as many maps can have very similar names, or even the same name but have been changed. :bulb:

The number of people and the netspeed will also be partly based on any mutators you are using and the game settings, like using a fast gamespeed for example.

I tried limiting my server to 7000 speed and everyone complained about increased lag/stutter. Playing CTF with several muts.

Of course, your system itself is also a factor.

Experiment. Try 10. If it gets laggy when full, drop back to 8. You likely won't get 10 for Onslaught.
