View Full Version : recentering screen in directx

When I start UT2K4 sometimes I get an "out of sync" error on my monitor. Im convinced it has something to do with directx apps recentering the screen differently than what I have windows set to.
Is there any way to fix this? It seems as if whatever calculation Windows and DirectX are using to center the screen are different, and if I could fix the centering on DirectX that would solve my problems. I already tried centering via my nvidia drivers to no avail.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

First of all check that you haven't overridden the DirectX refresh rate with one your monitor doesn't support. Click on the Start button and select Run. Type in dxdiag and click on the More Help tab and then Override. Check that the Refresh Rate is set to Default.
Next check your nVIDIA graphic card settings especially the tab which allows you to force the refresh rate of certain resolutions. Make sure that it is either set to the default or that the manual settings are set at a refresh rate your monitor supports. For lower resolutions (<1280x1024), 75Hz is fine but the higher the resolution the lower the refresh rate you can use. For example, it's unlikely that your monitor will support 1600x1200 @ 120Hz and if you've forced it then you'll get an out of sync error.
If they are okay then I suggest you open up the UT2004 System folder and rename the UT2004.ini to something like UT2004.bak.ini and restart the game. The game will recreate the UT2004.ini file and you'll have to adjust your settings again but everything should be set to their defaults.
If that doesn't work then I'm afraid I'm at a loss.
Good luck...

XP mistakenly things my monitor is capable of 1280x960 75 Hz when it's absolute limit is 72 Hz at that resolution. My normal refresh is 85 Hz. So when I switch to that resolution, XP goes down from 85 to find the next highest supported refresh, which it things is 75. Boom - out of sync error.
The workaround for this was to force 72 Hz for this mode using the NVIDIA control panel... the added benefit this has is that when I exit the game, my default refresh is still 85 Hz.
