OK, Idea I had...
Invastion meets assault, could work on some assault maps allready, with some modding.

picture something ala mines of moria themed Assault map. your team has to get to objective 1, find the dead king...you get there, and this triggers a map scpecifit wave 1. dozens of orcs and then a troll show up. wave completed, move to next objective. the big hallway. Wave two. lots and lots of orcs. finish wave, move on to ware three, the bartag or whatever, complete that, map ends.

that is of course, a very simplified example.

other maps would be something like, get from point A to B during wave 1.

so like, your ship has crashed, your team has to get another one. There is a skarrj fortress nearby, get to the fortress and find your way to the landingbay and leave.

so, each wave would have map specific monster spawn locations and numbers, and species.

so, getting from ship to fortress, you meet alot of the roaches, birds, and bugs. after you kill all those, wave one ends, anyone that dies respawns, and the fortress door opens.

inside, wave two occures, lots of the guys with pulse sticks, and a couple rocket launcher guys.

complete this wave, door opens to another section, leading the control room or something. wave three begins to spawn, this time alot of scarrj. complete, people that die respawn, open the bay doors. now get to the landing bay, wave four spawns, lots of advanced skarrj and rocket doods.

finish wave, landing bay door opens. inside landing bay you have the final wave of skarrj, warlords, gasbags, RL doods, whatever. complete wave, and enter ship to leave.

Sound good? You'd basically just need a way to customize the monster waves to be triggered events, and have monster spawn points that can be wave specific.

(So wave one monsters all spawn in the wave one location, outside, wave two are all in this area, wave three here, etc) and have events triggered on wave completion.
