Any tips on importing a working vehicle from max? I want to subclass the manta for a hovering vehicle I have created, but I need to know how many bones it will need and how to attach them properly. I haven't found any tutorials on this as of yet :(

For a flying vehicle you don't really need to do anything special at all, just export it with ActorX as you would any other mesh. You may need one or more bones to serve as attachment points if you have weapons though. Look at the Raptor and Manta models as an example.

make sure you read all of this document http://udn.epicgames.com/Two/SVehicleCreation
search the user reference that comes with max for "Linking and Unlinking Objects" (it will show you a pic of the right button to press)
Linking Objects
The general process of creating links is to build the hierarchy from child to parent. You click Select and Link on the toolbar, select one or more objects as children, and then drag the link cursor from the selection to a single parent object. The selected objects become children of the parent object.
Once objects are linked, any transformations applied to the parent are also applied to its children. For example, if you scale the parent to 150%, the size of its children and the distance between the children and the parent are also scaled by 150%.
having said that i still haven't successfully got a vehicle from max working in unreal yet (see http://sv2.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?threadid=65390&pagenumber=3 ) :(
