View Full Version : Easy Transportation Vechicle

I was tryin to think of a easy way to modify a existing Vechicle to make it transport people. You could do this with the manta or Hellbender. Ill post a drawing in a few mins after Im done posting this.

NO! PICKUP TRUCK! NOW!
DO IT!
Pickups are:
1) Easier to code! Forget WeaponPawns, people can just jump in!
2) Better! Passengers can shoot out from all directions, with their normal weapons! Leviathan turrets eat your heart out!
legacy-Tiko
03-30-2004, 09:05 PM
Draw me a concept of a Pickup (front, top, bottom) and I shall comply! OF course, you gotta make it UTish looking!
legacy-Xenocidal
03-31-2004, 09:41 AM
People can already jump on vehicles. You can fit about 10 on the tank itself :haha:
legacy-Dezro
03-31-2004, 04:39 PM
The tank is slow, though. But that's what I'm talking about when I say 'jump in'. No need to code anything, just make a vehicle designed for standing on.
legacy-M][St
03-31-2004, 08:03 PM
Yeah you could prob take the turret off the tank and transport people. The downside is it would be nothing special and boring plus people are wanting to try sumthin new.
legacy-M][St
03-31-2004, 08:10 PM
Dezro you seriously think a pickup truck would be good for this? Why not make a UT lookin medium sized bus without top and wide, no seats just jump in. Don't you think that would be much better and oh yeah some people may care about coding alot but you should (ALWAYS) think what the people want first before anything.

Something with a ramp up the back so you could easily run up it or drive other vehicles onto it would be neat. Actually just a drivable ramp would be kinda fun for setting up jumps and things

Well, I'd hope something like this:
SA "Pasi" (http://koovee.siperia.org/kuvat/photo/sa_int/slides/pasi_sivusta.jpg)
It's an APC like vehicle in the Finland's Army... But it has to be UNrealistic.
legacy-sI_Dj_:p
04-02-2004, 12:16 AM
you could make the ramp retractable by the altfire button, kind of like how the levatian depolys. The truck's back can open and the ramp goes down, people/small vehicles board/ load ramp close rear, then roll on out.
This sounds great. :D

Exactly! 3 people + a Scorpion could fit in there...
legacy-Kissamies
04-02-2004, 11:23 AM
Of course, why would someone want to transport a Scorpion or manta in a larger truck? Unless it's faster for some reason it's pointless. Fun but pointless. Better save the vehicle transporting for "Carryall" airplanes and dropships.

a pickup would be awsome.
if you make one, make the back ddrop down lower for each person, like the one in the pic

What I was thinkin of was a Raptor that could pick up a tank and move it somewhere. Or any vehicle. Or a raptor type thing that fits 6 or 8 people to transport them. Good for those maps with not enough vehicle.

That thing can carry people and the Warthog.

Just put in the raptor coding, plus armor upgrades and such, then just make a big open hold in the back without any clip to stop them from entering it. That would be pretty cool

You guys are going along the lines I would have suggested - do a new model, bone, and script it. From the VTMs I saw that a weapon position without a valid bone name would of course not cause a turret, etc to appear. I imagine that if you specify a turret position with a stagnat gunner (ala #2 position on the hellbender but give the mount point a non-existant name, you could end up with a seated passenger. Sloppy, yes, but it would get the job done. On the down side, the player wouldn't be able to fire and if they ever tightened down the error sensitivity of UT, you'd error out due to a missing bone or something.
Something that will need to be researched would be a passenger array instead of a weapons array for placing passengers. I'll look at this after I get a mini-tank in game that I am playing with.... walk before run..
legacy-Sporeflower
04-05-2004, 06:26 PM
i was thinking of drawing a minigun in the passenger-side window but didnt have time. i think it would be a little odd to have a pickup filled with guys and no armament:D
legacy-butcherboy
04-06-2004, 11:35 AM
I've made a rudimentary vehicle (not quite detailed as a release vehicle should be, but good enough to test theory. As it is, it is the height from tread to turret base of a Goliath the same length but about 75% as wide. I feel it might be too big, but I *think* it should be just the right size for carrying ~4-6 peeps...
It looks kind of like those safari/desert rat jeeps. Sorry for no screen shots as I have dial-up. I was thinking about adding either a Swivel mount maching gun ala desert rat, or like you are suggesting, a passenger fired machine gun - just add a roof to the vehicle and add a ring-and-swivel mount to the roof with maybe either a primary link fire weapon or the MG mount from the Goliath.
A MG mount like this but with an angled passenger side windscreen (http://66.70.25.241/corgi/us50204.jpg) .

From everything I've read, there isn't a way to export models from UT... Good idea, though. Adding seats to any vehicle usually means adding bones to the vehicle. I probably could "work around it" but getting things lined up without an original model would be a pain.

I dont know how to post a picture, but i thought about a hovercraft, a flat platform, with 4 turrets, and 2 weapon Lockers. This Hovercraft would be able to stay in mid air like a raptor...(whatcha think:rolleyes: :bulb:

Thats a good idea but I think it would be cool if somone made a flying base. A base that you fly and you put it where you want and when you leave it stays there for rest of game. Only allows 1 time for each player. So it would spawn raptors and maybe a few turrets. It could not be blow out of the sky. It would move fairly slow. Players could also spawn there. I like this Idea alot. Kind of Koooool.
legacy-butcherboy
04-07-2004, 12:15 PM
[flying base]
That would mean there would be two flying bases stuck in the center of the map :)
I got some more of the truck cab done last night, mirrored, got the passenger side cab worked out, and started detailing a little bit more. I still need to shrink it down about 90% - larger than a PRV (hellbender) but smaller than a Goliath. At about 2600 faces, I should end up with about 2800-900 faces. Further optimization (UT can handle non-planar faces nicely) should bring that number down to about 2600 again. I just need to texture, skin, and bone after that - might do it before.
Which would look better on the truck - an open turret or a closed turret on the prv?

Lol you could make it like the one they have in Command and Conquer Generals. Its a pickup with a machine gun turrent on the back and can hold 5 people, its also got springs like jelly so it would be pretty bouncy on rough terrain. :) heres a pichttp://images.ea.com/eagames/official/cc_generals_redesign/sides_gla/units/technical.gif

Thats what im saying, it stays and hovers in the air and its like a vehicle, and ( i dont know if this is possible) but after the driver dies it slowly returns to the ground, so it doesnt kill the others
or the driver respawns on the ship....

how about a Jeep wrangler with a big, full auto, shock rifle on the back that shoots powerful enought to destroy a manta with one shot but it needs to charge up with alt fire to charge up and reguler fire to shoot like 2x speed as a shock rifle

Well, I got it in game and ran across a few problems - the wheels floated a tad bit off the ground no matter what I did - I might as well delete the wheels I made and use the PRVs... or just use a different vehicle for a base model. I also ended up with some freaky polygons on the model itself for no humanly known reason, so I'll probably re-build it from scratch. That and I know a lot more on how to get things done better now.
I found out that Maya is a love/hate relationship in regards to skinning - it just isn't fun to do, but I'll do it.
Other than that, it was fun to work on it, and it will just keep getting more fun...
When I find a place to host picture, I will post some..
legacy-butcherboy
04-10-2004, 05:05 PM
I am looking for hosting.. and have the new model in a "usable but not quite done" state - it needs cab work, window work(more on this), a MG model (no biggie), texturing (called skinning above) and some stat tweaking (to make it more unique handling wise).
Check My Site (http://geocities.com/whirabomber) for photos.
- I don't like the front grill at all
- not textured yet
- no windows
- uses the #1 PRV position turret
- tires need more details

Weee.. figured out how the COG works so the truck has tight feet now - it basically and logically uses the distance the model is from the origin to calc the COG for the vehicle - I just needed to raise the vehicle and it worked.
Texturing and Karma tweaking is next.. as is making the grill look like SporeFlower's picture. It is fun to drive, but I need to lower it's hp a little and add passenger slots in the bed :D.

legacy-butcherboy
04-12-2004, 07:50 PM
I can see bigger and better detailed tires. I do have the big mg turrent piviting right, etc, I just need to position a few things better and texture. I am going to hate texturing in Maya - the texture options are planar, cylindrical, spherical, and automatic. Automatic means it takes your suggestion of how many planes the thing should use to UV map your model and ignores it. I end up with a few discrenable sides and like 200 or so triangles that have no indication of what triangle they actually are. I need a simple "cube map" as opposed to "scramble".
Once I get the minute tweaks down, it is time to see if I can't add 2 or so passenger slots in the bed. If I keep on target, I could launch an essentially untextured version by Weds or Thurs.
It handles well, is fast, and is the last thing on the pecking list when it comes to AI targets - the oppostion AI will fire on tanks, planes, and manta's well before it notices the truck. Usually my last words are "uh oh" because the AI ran out of the other things to shoot. I guess you could call the truck a clavary vehicle as the MG has a little punch to it (just the tanks mg for now) and is fast enough to make it a hard target.
The map in the pictures is just a quick map I use to test things. It isn't good for flying things, but is good for vehicles.
