After watching a topic about mechs, i decided i wanted to make one, and i choosed the one from "The Matrix".
THE APU (Armoured Personnel Unit) is a human-piloted offensive/defensive mobile platform. It is anthropomorphic with bipedal locomotion and two independent 30mm belt-feed guns. The APU and the APU Corps form part of the defence against the Matrix, in particular the Sentinels.
I decided to take a stab at it, i finally finished the main body, im about 50% done, you can see i haven't done much detailing. And worse im not a very good texturer

Hi there
If your after suggestions I woul say this has quite a ways to go. It looks very awkward and ungainly, also the shoulders look like telegraph poles sticking out.
I am no mech expect not being a big fan of the genre myself but if memory serves they usually look cool and dangerous. This just looks like its in dander of falling over.
Hope you dont think I am being too hard as its clear you have worked on this but I really think it needs some pizzaz!
Good luck:)

yeah, they have been bothering me also, i was just worried about over using polys. :p i know its skinny and I think i need to scale up the legs and the arms somewhat.
:) thanks for the suggestions.
EDIT: i think the arms are sitting out to far also, i don't do mechs alot :bulb:

Good start
But: 2950 polys is alot for such a low detail model.
As for the design: do a net search for refs.
OT: I hated the Matrix mechs, the driver was completely exposed. One sniper could take out an army of them. My thinking on that bad design is that the mechs were retro-fitted for combat. Thier orignial use was 'other'.
I guess in the Unreal world the mech could have a power shield so it wouldn't need metal shielding.

I have a ref model, next to me, you can buy the APU at stores.
(about the polys) I dunno if this would make any diffenence, but im using GMAX, not any of the normal programs, i can't afford 3DS.

Don't cap yourself at 3 or 4000 polys, there most likely won't be more than one or two of them in a map at any given time, so higher poly won't make a difference. I'd happily go up to 6000 for a vehicle model, as long as those polys are all well spent (no messy modelling) :)

i think maybe u spent a little 2 much poly's in the cilindrical parts of the model, if u can get some nice looking texture it doesnt really matter a lot and you could use something like 10 sided cilinders, for example the 3rd person weapons in rainbow 6 raven shield have only 6 sides for the cilinder parts, but because the textures are so good u wont notice this lack of poly's unless you look at it from the front.

I decided to fix the arms and scale up the legs, i got my polys wrong btw, its really 2730 (with some changes i have made.
I have never really been great with detail, thats never been a strong point. :(
The guns on the APU are belt feed, which starts on the ammo boxes on the back and hang down till they meet at the front. Im not sure how i can make the belt feed mesh work.
And should the driver be out in the open? I was thinking about making the cockpit covered.

Don't make the driver exposed. I agree with Sett, they called those things "APU"s but there was nothing armored about them. But if you think about it, both Sentinels and APUs were very un-military like. If you were going to be inspired by the concept, keep what you like, and discard the crap. IE: Cover the pilot in an armored cockpit, and make it look like its more stable for bi-pedal walk instead of looking like a strong wind could blow it over. :)

Thanks, I am going to fix the cockpit, and the legs will be much beefer. It looks like a stick in that picture. I just kinda started with building the main parts, and am fixing the detail alot.
Im gonna have to rely on the texture alot :p

02-25-2004... I think the chances of this getting released are pretty slim.

It's been discontinued. Look at the dates. This has been here for about... 4-5 years.
