whats better: a geforce fx 5900 (o'c to ultra), or an ati radeon 9800 pro. ive looked at sites w/ reviews and comparisons, and they all seem to come up w/ different results.

i have a 9800 pro 128
cant complain.
id go with the better $$ deal you can find. likewise, id strongly consider going with the nvidia card if you run amd and the ati card if you run pentium. from all the HONEST benchmarks i saw out there... that alone seemed to be a major factor.
but again, go with which has the better $$ deal.
im a radeon owner but i dont feel that the nvidia card is particularly bad. i run a pentium rig and was under the impression that the radeon was more quiet. finally, it was on the shelf and the nvidia was not... when i had the cash.

Buy both and send the one that is worse to me.

imo the 9800 pro...it seems to do better in direct x 9 benchmarks

9800 also runs cooler and doesn't have that whiney sound like a honda civic at full load.

Hey Ejen! What brand is it?

MSI, very happy with it...stock cooling is fantastic...card drops 10 C in less than 2 minutes flat .... no problems  it is loud tho... more like a muffled hair dryer

I was looking at a 5950 U golden sample. It SEEMS superior to the 9800 XT in nearly every way, except benchmarks. Maybe I'll take another look at nVidia.

Lately I've been leaning more toward Nvidia. The FX 5900 is a great card, especially if you OC it. I haven't seen the shader benches lately, but if those have gotten better then you really can't go wrong with a high-end Nvidia card. Chaintech makes very good cards, as does PNY. I notice someone mentioned that their Nvidia is noisy. Well, PNY are known for their quiet cooling solutions. :) Go for it. :)

so ur going the opposite way the entire gaming community is heading :o
anyway, 9800pro is better thana FX5900 coz Ati latest cards are way more optimized than nVidia cards for DX9, just coz nVidia made a silly mistake in their H/W algorithms. the performance of Ati in DX9 benchmarks can be 2 times faster than nVidia's.
Thou, nVidia is faster in OpenGL (not 2 times but it is significant). thats the reason y the benchmarks can be confusing. test UT2003 and Ati is better, test Enemy Territory and nVidia is better. :p

hehe go with NVIDIA they are the underdog now. we can't let ATI take over!!! (likewise of NVIDIA gets too much marketshare. :p )

Nvidia's not really the underdog. When ATI gets mixed up in their Xbox2 deal, they may just fall behind like Nvidia did. Either way I could care less, as long as both companies keep making quality products at competitive prices. :D

Currently there are 3 types of games on the market:
DirectX7 games: same speed
DirectX8 games: ATi faster
DirectX9 games: ATi around twice as fast
Also nVidia have some extra bonuses like playing dirty and some cards have very loud fan while some 9800 ATi's card dont have an active fan at all.
So decide for yourself..

Where are you getting these numbers dude? Didn't you just read that tom's hardware shop review? They are no where near those numbers.
Here we have a perfect example of another fanboy or maybe just a brainwashed user.
While ATi's cards have 8 shader pipelines, nVidia has only 4. (or better only one, working as 4)
8>4 kthxbye
nVidia was lying(well ok, avoided to mention this issue) about that too. Only after testers discovered it later, it admited this fact.
And those doom3 benchmarks are not only broken, they are long obsolete, better read what Carmac himself said, ill not search.
Ah and the word "cheating drivers" sais nothing to you right?
Edit:
Here is a link from a same tomshardware site (http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030918/aquamark-17.html) which shows how much a driver can influence if cheated(thats what i meant with "dirty tricks" )

And of course we all know that ATI doesn't do this as well.

a 9800 pro is way better than a 5900 non ultra
Your compareing a high end card to a dulled down high end card

What is surprising to me is that ATI had such a solid lead, and then Nvidia made a sneaky comeback. I was poised to buy an ATI card, but have now re-evaluated the performance and visuals of both parts, and am going to go with Nvidia. The transparency and blending effects are better, and something about the way Nvidia renders the image just sits better with me. The only thing I don't like is the inferior anisotropic filtering and antialiasing. Anyone know if the latest drivers have helped this situation any?

A 9800Pro for $212 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-268&catalog=48&depa=1) is pretty unbeatable.
I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in anything from Tom's Hardware, they're the same ones who said the N-Gage is a revolutionary piece of hardware :p

the Leadtek 5950 ultra is the best FX, or even maybe the most powerful gamer card around
id wait to see what happens in April when they bring out their new stuff

The Nvidia 5900 FX Ultra is $205 at newegg and I did great benchmarks and is really affordable right now. I just don't want to go ATI cause of their sometimes good/sometimes bad driver support and alot of games are optomized for Nvidia.
