It IS GOOD. I tried beta4 and it's a small hardcore level that looks much bigger than it actually is. Atmosphere is fine as well.

yup I found this in the beta section of unrealplayground too, this map is staying on my hard drive. The only gripe i have is the area with the wooden planks, you can just fall off and die, but all you did was fall. There was no lava no water no nothing just blah. I wish there was like a icy stream you fell into or something that could account for your death. This and I would have put the shield exactly where the mini gun is to make it more interesting in that room with the planks. I love everything else about the map tho the scale is just perfect. I love how I can boost dodge from the pillar next to the rl straight to the lg gun :D  ownage gameplay imo however simple this map is, its good stuff. first map or not download this sucker. good job zeromorph :) I'm looking forward to future releases from you.

Nice map, although some may argue it too simple... Nice atmosphere, though.

Hey thanks you guys for the comments. These kind of words are encouraging towards my next release.
I guess the map is fairly simple, but the new piece I am just starting is going to have more verticality and variation.
The area with the pit is supposed to be bottomless, but if it was you would keep falling and falling, so I decided to put a falling volume in there to kill you off quick so as to carry on fragging without too much delay. I did dabble with a lava pit but I couldn't get the lighting right, and spent ages trying till I gave up and took the easier abyssal approach. Totally lazy I know but I'll make up for it in my next level.:D

Disregard this... Much better without ChaosUT2. :D Map is outstanding...

You won't get any comments about gameplay from me because i'm not much of a "gamer"
BUT............This is a keeper, for me at least!
As for not having screenshots...oh well. Gamers should definately give this a try, and give feedback. When it comes to mapping...zeromorph's skills are solid!
The textures and meshes are great. Are most of the textures custom? The Giger textures are used well.
The lighting is good>great. I would recommend, if you have green lighting in an area.....that you also have a green lightsource.
Your BSP work is simple & excellent. Many mappers lately are relying too much on statics to fill the gaps. You use them as "compliments" to your BSP skills.
As for the fall from the platform....a long fall would be great. Don't settle for a quick death, just for gameplay. Put in a volume with a heavy gravity, that takes you right to the killzone. Maybe light it up a bit....and add some skulls or skeletons to the walls.
Your sacrifice for simplicity is understood. Making the map playable is appreciated by all.....but don't be afraid to get "fancy".
You've zoned everything well and the framerate is good. (I have a pretty good rig, though)
Finally....you made it possible for snipers and campers to have some fun. The only reason i'm saying this is because....it should always be a factor.
I pulled the translocator out and shot up to the "outside area". Was that intentional? If so...i'm happy. I'd put a "goodie" up there. Maybe the keg, or something.
Again......people/gamers should give zeromorph all the advice they can.
I look forward to your next project!
:D
EDIT: I failed to mention, that your pathing looks good too. I'll spectate a proper bot match after work tonight. :)

one thing i didnt like is that in the room with the wood walkway if you fall off onto the rock ledge there is no way to get back on the walkway(from what i could tell) so you have to kill your self to get back in the game :(

Somehow, this looks very familiar, did GUI help you make this?
or am I barking up the wrong tree.
Not really liking it so far, can't seem put my finger on the reason, but I think the trimming stands out too much, not sure.

Maybe, like other people, your allergic to "Quake-like" maps. :D
I dunno.

I dont know why people would not dig quake 3 maps, they're so damn hardcore. But then again I detest most of the quake 3 stock maps when I talk about quake 3 maps I'm talking about all the godlike sexy user made maps. I love the maps lunaran and charon make, and a few from bal.

The map does have slight resemblance with certain Quake 3 maps which is quite nice, if you ask me...
legacy-zeromorph
01-04-2004, 08:54 AM
Well the architecture is purely my own work, but I did get some help from Gui about the lighting.
If you fall from the wooden walkway onto the rocks then you can boost dodge off the wall back up. The bots never do this so you just have to execute them.
If a quake-style map doesn't float your boat, then you probably won't enjoy this as much as people who do, but I can't please everyone.
Thanks again all comments greatly appreciated.:)

Very good for a first map.
Good sized, decent looking map that performs well. It isn't too wide open and it's not too tight either. It has enough z-axis to keep things interesting and there are some really nice trickjump shortcuts too. :D
I didn't care for the room the 100 shield is in... That part just doesn't flow very well. Still it's a keeper.

Very nice map imo. I like the 2 arenas, but maybe is too much placing RL e LG in the same room. I would place the shield in the position of the LG. It seems to me it's natural position (you can boost to the central platform from L,R & C and being under attack from any point). I don't like that much narrow corridors... difficult to escape from combos (but I'm a terrible player anyway) and the position of the second shield (so out of the flow). Very nice (and smart) texturing. Good work, imo!

So you are speaking about the theme and gameplay in general? Yeah, I know what 'quakish' means (I must admit I don't like 'hellish' themes that much). But I've to say that imo is not all 'pure gold'... I don't understand all the success of Campgrounds, for example. But I love Ilarnek (universally known as quakish).

Same here. Ilarnek   Campgrounds   I really don't understand how campgrounds can be so popular. IMO it's a terrible map. Looks bad and plays worse.

hmm, personally I think ilnarek is awesome and looks incredible too despite the fact I dont like those evily texture stuff but hell it looks sexy all the same. As far as campgrounds go I think the ut2003 remake sucks espeacially in terms of visuals, the original is awesome but the theme isnt really my thing. The thing that is so beautiful about campgrounds is the gameplay, flow, weapon layout, and the trick potential. I wish there was a better remake of campgrounds, at one point I was going to do it but I changed my mind, I decided I want to create original and new stuff.

I like campgrounds.... but my favorite quake converted map is Edge http://www.mapraider.com/maps/?fileid=129 it's a well laid out map
you screenshot in your level reminded me of one of the maps in the CBP (community bonus pack) that was put on a few months ago... it looks very good for your first level

nope, downloaded it played it, nice. Still ugly though I would have given it a new theme but this is definately better than the versions of campground I've tried. I got about 70 avg fps but it was too laggy for me, too many antiportals or something. ouch. The bots play pretty well on this map too I must say I got owned by masterfull bots by 3 points. (i lost the game by 3 points with 6 bots) I love the layout of campground but I wish it played better and looked better ie texture and theme.
I'm going to try out edge now, i'll edit this post in a min.
--edit--
ah ok, I've played this map before in a mod for quake 3 right? I have mixed feelings about the map. I dont like how the author placed the weapons in the way of you have to go down a really long ass corridor just to get the rl, I kind of like the layout a little bit (conflicted about that) but this map is also ugly imo textue and theme could have been much better. Oh also the author of this map was NOT smart in putting the shield and mega health in the same room! I owned the bots easily because of this.

Call guiness because I think we just broke the world record for oldest bump, 6 years. lol
Wasn't there a 7 year bump? A thread from 2003.
However, nice map.

Speaking of records, I believe this (campgrounds) map has inspired more variations-on-a-theme *.ut2 maps than any other. When the big gameservers.net archive was available, it contained 70+ variations of that map (64 of which were sucky, but that's beside the point).

Oh for sure. We once had about 6 alone on the mxc server. It was freaking stupid.
IMO the best version is a new-ish one. Kind of based off of the DM-EGYPT-Campgraounds or whatever.
This one is called DM-f00k-Campgrounds...check it out if your a fan. For sure the best version visually and gameplay wise. Campgrounds usually has serious door issues :p This one only has minor door issues...lmao

If I'm a fan? I guess I'm a campgrounds fan.
I found the textfile containing the list of filenames I had gathered, last updated Jan 2009. 84 campgrounds variations are listed & I had typed notes (mostly noting that many of the maps seemed to just be renamed, but otherwise identical maps) so, back when, I guess I worked my way through the list and and tried them all. Of the lot, these are the only variations I've kept onhand:
DM-Campgrounds_SF.ut2
DM-Campgrounds2009Beta2.ut2
DM-Campgrounds-2007-P3N.ut2
DM-Campgrounds2004-G1E.ut2
DM-][-CampGrounds-2K7-][.ut2
crypt-of-f00k remains one of my favorite maps, and DM-f00k-Venduuhl is in my collection, but if the f00k campground map was Egyptian themed I would have chucked it in a heartbeat (there's only been 2 or 3 Egyptian maps, ever, which didn't seem so trite they made me want to puke. It's like the wannabe mappers didn't have any imagination or didn't have any other Lego bricks to "build" with)

Thanx, I do mostly egytpian maps. :/ Actually more "Nahkti" really though. :p
I like the egypt stuff....just feels cool to me. Ancient mixed with modern is a cool ass concept to me, but I know waht ya mean.
G1E, SF, SC1 and are my favorites.
