Hey Teddie, is that the Cartwright Hall in Manningham, Bradford? It looks like it could be from those shots. Just wondering if that's where you're from 'cause I too live in Bradford. Would be good to have some contact from a mapper living so close.

Edit: Just looked at your music website and seen you're actually from the US so I guess it's a different Cartwright Hall, lol. Ah well!

That looks fantastic Teddie. I saw the same competition in a few magazines but I thought that the photographs on the magazines disc were crap and I couldnt get my head around it. Cant believe youve made such a good job of this from the material supplied.

Spam Saviour: That is the Cartwright Hall youre talking about. I recognise it from the screenies and what pictures there were in PC Format magazines competition a few months ago, although I have to say that this map looks much better than the actual building in reality

Just coz Teddie's in the States doesnt preclude him from making a map of somewhere other than the US :haha:

Ah right, so there was a competition to make a map of Cartwright Hall? Soz I've not seen the mag. So did they include detailed photographs of the layout and everything?

I wonder why they chose Cartwright Hall as a map venue?

Ah right, so there was a competition to make a map of Cartwright Hall? Soz I've not seen the mag. So did they include detailed photographs of the layout and everything?

I dont know if the competition was repeated in other countries, but in the UK it was in PC Format magazine and Im almost certain at least 2-3 others. Obviously you can also get these mags overseas on subscription but usually they dont allow compo' entries from overseas. They had a disc with photos and a floorplan on the mag.

However, from Teddies screenies it looks like hes made it much to clean compared to the photos. Think "run down museum with lack of cash finance". Ive not been there but thats the impression I got from the photo's. Sorry for any offence to Cartwright Hall. ;)

I wonder why they chose Cartwright Hall as a map venue?

I dont have the mag to hand but seem to remember it being something to do with the people who work there are big 2K3 LAN gamers and have offered some prize to have a map made of their museum (Im gonna do this too with my house sometime - prize is a pair of socks and some used skids).

I just thought that to make such a map of Cartwright Hall that you would have to have been there to get accurate building layouts and such.

As above, plan and photos were provided but not good ones IMHO - and my job is to interpret designs, drawings & specifications to price works. Its better to have seen it in real life but not always crucial. However, for someone of Teddies ability with Max etc it probably wasnt tooooo hard to make something pretty close to reality.

So where abouts are you from Wulf?

legacy-Teddie

lol. hi folks.

This map isn't for the msu. I'd get my ass kicked all over the place in the msu.

It's actually for a little competition I stumbled upon while surfing for p0rn (just kidding) but I did stumble upon it.

This one:
http://www.pcformat.co.uk/competition/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=19313&subsectionid=690

I've never been to Cartwright Hall (I live in VA, USA), so this was a hellish puzzle for me to put together from the photos that were provided.

I'll reply to everyone when I get back home.
My wife is giving me the "You're on the laptop again?" stinkeye.

All work submitted may be published and distributed freely by Future Publishing and Bradford Council.
Neat. Me = PC Format subscriber.

We reserve the right to substitute an equivalent prize of equal value.
That sucks. :D

lol, I can imagine their faces when they'll read the name of the author (it seems to me a contest mostly for first time mappers)! Anyway, hope your 'popularity' doesn't play against you... I don't know, maybe they want to prize some unknown talent (it happens sometimes in contest). About msu... for maps the first phase was imo the most difficult. For the second phase imo there are only two maps that deserve to win (CyberChrist, CTFX1, do you agree  ?). For the third... who knows? But judging from shots CartwrightHall has imo FINALIST written all over the place! :D

I dont know wich maps are in the 2nd phase :/ I went through them at one time before and checked them all out but I cant remember wich ones were good. I remember most of them were not very good tho. like you said mostly first time mappers. I think cartwrighthall looks absolutely stunning but is the gameplay there? espeacially is the z axis there? thats my question and it wont be answered until teddy releases it ;)

NO!!! I've not said msu 2nd phase is full of n00b mappers!!! How can I DARE to say something like that? :bulb:
I was only guessing that probably the contest Teddie is mapping for now was probably created for first time mappers.

Anyway, there's a list of msu 2nd phase entries? I've said only 2 maps remembering more or less the threads posted here or at UP at the time. But probably there are a lot of good maps in the 2nd phase I've not tried or I don't remember. We'll see. ;)

ah ok I mis understood you then. There was a list I saw it quite some time ago cant remember where tho I think it was that one website where it has all those big fixes for various things like u paint and the ed, its an oficial website. I think ut used to link to it ingame. but ut2003 doesnt. but lately its been all about the msu contest.

I'm not sure it really plays well. I think it's faithful to the actual architecture, but...

I did take some subtle liberties with certain things so it would flow better. There were things in the photographs provided that would have stopped a player dead in a flow... no go. bonk.

I dunno. I have fun playing it while testing, but I'm not hard to please.

It felt right testing with about 8 players.... or less. I think this map would really be better suited for a sneak and shoot environment... I dunno. The architecture in the map is, I think, very faithful to the floorplans I saw and the photographs (puzzle) that were provided, but with that, it's kinda flat except for certain areas. :(

Thanks Fizzy. I looked at those dang photographs for a while and told myself a few times that I wasn't going to bother with it.... The photographs are a freakin' puzzle. I couldn't make out where in the museum these things were being taken. Then one day I was looking at some of them that I printed out while I was on the can... and it became sort of clear and I started throwing it together in Ued... It was frustrating though not being able to visit the actual building.... frustrating. very. There are still areas and details in certain corners of rooms I have no idea if they're right or not.

Hi SC. The middle area with the statues of the women fighting was an optimizer's nightmare, but I really optimized the doo-doo out of this map, because it really really needed it. It plays well on my machine.

Thanks for the kind words.

I tried my best on the optimizations. Did more cull distances this time than I usually do. Only thing, if a player is using a really wide FOV like 105+, some things will not show up properly.

What's the average FOV people use? I use like 85 or 90. Is it locked in multi-player? What's it locked at?

Obviously you can also get these mags overseas on subscription but usually they dont allow compo' entries from overseas. They had a disc with photos and a floorplan on the mag.

Yeah, I kept re-reading the contest rules to make sure I wasn't screwing myself.

for any offence to Cartwright Hall.

I really wanted to rip this place up. Just wreck it to shreds. But I felt so dirty after doing that. So dirty.

Thanks De@th. My knees are okay. It's my hands from gripping the poles, and my hips are f*cked. Er.. and my back.

I wiped out one time and my nose plowed the snow backwards and I got up and my son came down to me with his snowboard and I looked at him and I hocked out an ice cube type loogie. Not really a loogie, just a crap load of ice that was plowed up into my nose. It took my legs a long time to remember how to ski again, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the kind words Kaimyr.

Honestly, I think I'm only well known for my mapping on this INA forum. In fact, only this particular section - the maps and mods section. You give me too much credit. And I'm still a n00b in my mind. So much more to learn.

well personally I'm STILL working on that damned Dm-ThorsHammer but it will be finished soon, I'm trying to put in some terrain but everytime I finish puting the package name and all that it crashes with a bug, hopefully that will be resolved soon, if not then I'll just make do without the terrain. But either way I will be starting a new map when I get my layout from carp, Its about darn time. I used to multi task like crazy like you teddy but it was just too much and I couldnt handle it so I deleted all the others and started DM-ThorsHammer. The next map should be MUCH quicker to make as I'm not going to delve into curves, it should be a much easier map to optimize as well. (i'm an optimizer n00b as is.) I have more than 100 fps in my map yet its still laggy, I think I'm not useing too many antiportals or something, or not useing them effectively.

I put blocking volumes around the benches/chairs.

You can run right over them without thinking about it.

EDIT: Unless you're talking about the inquiries desk, with the security monitor. There's only one of those right at the entrance to the central lower area. You can almost just run into the chair and step right up onto the inquiries desk, or just jump over it.... or around it.

So the whole thing took you about 1½ months to complete? Can you give us some idea as to the amount of new content you created? Like how many new statics, textures, etc.?

Were you mapping while still putting in the usual 9 to 5 at the office or were you mapping solidly all day every day? I'm just curious as to how long it takes me to map compared to someone else.

Cheers Teddie.

Cheers Teddie.

I'd have to guess at the amount of custom meshes because I have them grouped up and it would be a pain to count them (unless someone knows how I can tally it easier).

Probably about 200 +- custom static meshes.

Maybe 400 or so custom textures? Maybe more/or less. I'm not sure. I know I did a lot of them. Most of the bulk is from all the paintings, etc.

I was mapping and putting in the usual 9 to 5, yes.

I almost didn't make the deadline though. I had to work some all nighters to get it done and still get my regular job work done.

The map was about 192 hours I estimate. I think.

legacy-Spam Saviour

200 custom meshes alone makes my jaw hit the floor with a heavy thud! Holy guacamole!

That works out at about 4½ meshes a day (or evening as you were working your usual job) plus about 9 textures a day, plus putting the actual map together precisely as the blueprints dictate.

That is some workrate Teddie! Were you doing this alone or had you some help from others?

What package are you using for your meshes? Max? Maya? Lightwave?

It's taken me about 4 times as long as you to make my level and I'm still not finished, plus I've had help. We've had lots of changes in direction though which don't help.

Nah. It wasn't that big a deal. I didn't make many difficult meshes. In fact, I made a lot of the architecture with just a stick. It's amazing what you can do with a bunch of sticks. Sticks everywhere.

The hardest meshes for me to make were the statues of the women fighting and lemme see, and UV mapping the little curly crowns at the top of the some of the columns. You see, I used the actual photograph of the curly crowns to UV map the mesh... when I was done, I was running around the map looking up at the curlys. The center edges of the curlys ended up looking like vaginas. I had to change it a few times.

Exactly. This is a possibility.

I think it's pretty close architectually to the actual hall... but it made it pretty flat in areas.

Also, the upper areas are more open to flow which is cool.

The lower areas, not so much except in the central area.

Anyway, been used so many meshes... did you use lightmaps? I'm not saying lighting sucks, but from shots many meshes seems so..., well, 'clean' (I think you know what I mean). I'm not an expert (well I've never made a static mesh, nor a map for that matter), maybe there's only a good amount of zone lighting?

I try so hard to learn the lightmap stuff.

I have not found a good "system" yet of doing them. I'd love some help in that area of learning.

I found one tutorial regarding lightmapping or baking, and I'm still clueless.

Anyone have good resources?

There are blocking volumes around the chairs/benches that allow you to run right over them. They won't hinder your movement.

It will be like stepping up and then stepping down.

Simple, just format your HDD. That'll get rid of 'em ;)

Sorry I know there was no need for that but just couldn't resist :p

Does it let you rename the files or move them to another directory? Do you get a reason why they can't be deleted (ie they are in use)?

Yep Red-Pill, thats exactly what Ive got - or not got! Its a damn long file name too, in fact the whole description has been used as the file name.

Does it let you rename the files or move them to another directory? Do you get a reason why they can't be deleted (ie they are in use)?

Nope. on right click I get the menu with "Preview, Open, Print, Edit, Open with... & Send To" options. Pressing delete key does absolutely nothing at all - not even a beep.

Its damnably strange. Ive tried any approach i can think of to rename them but cant.

So Teddie- whats so special about your "thang" that you felt the need to post it in a forum? Hold on, we're getting off topic on PenOr's now so forget I typed that. I like my 0WL's as they are.

legacy-Spam Saviour
01-07-2004, 03:38 PM
It could well be because of the length of the filename or...

Does the name of the file end with a space " " or a period "."

If it does then you won't be able to delete it as the Win32 file naming convention doesn't allow filenames to end in those characters. Open up a command prompt and navigate to the directory where your file is and type 'dir /x' which will list the files short name. Then type 'del [shortname]' to remove the file.

If this doesn't work then what operating system are you running and is the file on a shared resource?

Nope. Nothing works. Im going out to buy a strong magnet soon!

It really p$**es me off that a pucker mag (which I get monthly)can be so stupid to allow something like that to happen, plus why is it that when they can be bothered to put a selection of 2K3 maps on the coverdisk, they dont have any (maybe at most a couple) good maps like we see round here or U.P? 98% of what they offer are maps youve never even heard of and with basically bad gameplay and visuals.

You'd think that the coverdisk bod or whoever sources the maps to put on the disk would contact decent mappers for permission to use their maps.

On the other hand maybe they have and got refused!!

You're killing me, bro. I keep saying, those benches, you walk right over them. They will not block your movement. If you are looking directly at the bench, and move forward to it, when you reach it, your player will AUTOMATICALLY step right over them. You do NOT need to walk AROUND them brother. No worries, I can tell how much effort and execution skill went into the construction/appearance and I just wanted to make it clear that people notice that!!

As for my map/s - finished in the next month or two and not released until UT2k4 ships (as I want to check out new weapons and such - it will be a 2k4 map after all - though as they are backwards/forwards compatable the line will be blurred a little too much for my tastes )

Hmm the only mod I actively play is Red Orchestra, somehow I think this map won't be appropriate for it.

Personally I think this map would be great for SF2003 =) The mod is still in development though... but on the other hand I'm sure you have heared about the reputation of the famous SF_Optimizer.... hasn't been a mappers friend in the past =) See the link in my sig for the forums!

JP was quiet for a long time after Rob left. Then they found a replacement Tim "Ripper" Owens and they published 4 records "Jugulator" (couple good songs, but not so good overall), Meltdown '98 Live (good live, some of the songs Ripper sings wonderfully and some not so good), Demolition (best "Ripper" record, I like it a lot) and Live In London (also DVD, haven't seen or heard, said to be somewhat "mellow"). Now Rob is back, new record is coming and a world tour too. There is also new DVD out (Electric Eye, which I own. Includes all Priest promo videos ever made, Priest! It looks a nice map teddie my friend, i can't really say much more because i've never heard or seen cartright hall, maybe because i live in the u.k.

Any chance i could test it and i'ii give you some feedback?

There's a little bit. I was locked into the making it as close to the floorplans of the actual architecture... So, as I've said, it's a little flat in some areas.

They used to have switches on the back of the PSU to regulate the voltage, but I've not seen them of late. I guess all you'd need to do is replace the PSU? or get a voltage adapter.

I'll go one better than Wulf and give ya $10 for it Teddie :D

What the adapter look like?

Is it just a different type of power cable with the converter between? Or is it a replacement PS?

$5.00. Ok. I'll ship it out to you if I win.

Ive got a feeling the prize is a Dell notebook/laptop so that being the case then they sell them all over the world and the only thing I expect Teddie would have to do would be to go to the Dell website to order a USA PSU and then that'd be it. Im sure their tech support people would know.

People are always going abroad and buying kit cheaper and bringing it home so this cant be any different.

If all else fails, Teddie can just save it for use on one of his jet set holidays to the UK when hes richer and famouser.

It owns for gaming, there's no such thing as ghosting (i never seen it). It's sharper than sharp and the colors are very rich. I had to get used to it for like a week but after i used it for a week, never no CRT for me anymore.

The only negative parts are: i have 1 dead subpixel, alot of them are pixel perfect and some got dead subpixels but well. It doesn't really bother me. Then there is the resolution thing. The optimal resolution is 1280x1024, windows is no problem ofcourse but some games at 1280x1024 are a bit to much. That means turning of anti-aliasing or in game details. Lowering the res is also an option ofcourse. It works fine but the screen gets a bit blurry. It's not much of a problem in games but it still bugs me. Windows looks like **** if i wouldn't run it at 1280x1024.

So, if i play ut2k3 i turn off AA (you don't notice it while playing anyway) but i keep AF on. AF is worth alot more than AA imo.

My system is a overclocked amd athlon 2500+, it runs at the speed of which a 3500+ would run. My vid. card is a 128 mb radeon 9800 pro which i sometimes run at oc'ed settings but most of the time at default speed. With all this i still get slowdowns in some games at 1280x1024 with all on highest and AF + AA.

However, the benefits of a good TFT screen truly outweigh it's shortcommings.

I had a good crt before, 19" iiyama vision master pro but this tft blows it away :).

A dead subpixel is one little dot on the screen which constantly stays one color, mine is green :/.

To avoid it ask for a pixel perfect screen, they might charge extra for that and there's always a chance that you get a dead pixel later on.

I admire your work so thats why I'm asking if you could explain your workflow. I'm not trying to copy or get the best way, because there is no one way to acomplish things. Just very curious and I love reading stuff like that of other artists. Thanks

Just a question Ted... when you make a map... do you make the whole map in a 3d program and then import it in parts to UEd or do you map it all in the UEd and then make separate meshes in a 3d program?
Oh and what 3d program do you use?

Just have to know! :D

I believe he uses lightwave, I think... I highly doubt he does all that stuff in a 3d package that would be too hard, and far too lengthy to make.

lol
It could all be a result of a cultural difference, in this country (UK) if you go for a job and don't get it, they don't write to you to tell you as a norm. You are contacted if you win though, so heres hoping for a June release ;)
Also fairness will be defeated by ease of job every time in this country, lol, if I was given the job of picking a winner and sending the prize off, that winner would live in the UK, I'd make sure of it :(

Anyway, Teddie, can't wait, whenever it is and good luck as always :)

To avoid it ask for a pixel perfect screen, they might charge extra for that and there's always a chance that you get a dead pixel later on.

Thanks Noz. I'll possibly look into that.

if ppl can't put your maps on a pedestal, i dunno if anyone deserves to have their maps put on one (ok maybe angelheart, lol), but seriously, on par with a few other great mappers (can't list them all here, i'll admit there's a bunch), you really contribute to keep this community going ! and kudos for that .

Well, thanks for the kind words. Means a lot.

Thanks kgb.

It's different each time. The only thing that really stays consistent with my workflow is the planning.

I usually plan stuff out on paper while I'm sitting on the can. Everytime I sit on the can, I bring my notes with me and keep planning it until I'm ready to start building.

I have no real consistent workflow. I just plan it then do it. I just have to throw myself into it.

Although, I have a good tip for you. When you're building your map, if you get to a point where your just spinning your wheels trying to finish it; grab a pad of paper and go sit on the toilet. Make a big as$ check-list of things that need to be done to your map while your sitting on the can. When you get out of the can, try to stay focused on that checklist and just finish things on that list... Stay focused. If you can't stay focused, then it's time to break away from that map for a little while and do something else. Come back fresh.

Kill for Fun,

I do it in UEd and I make separate meshes in Lightwave (sometimes max).

Correct. I'm trying to learn more of Max though. I feel it's less clunky. But LW is where I'm confortable at the moment.

very kind of you... lol

Yes I`m in the U.K Near Coventry( Actually In Warwickshire) where I have Codemasters and Rare (and blitz games) on my doorstep and no jobs for me ;) - In the US there seems to be many more oppurtunities.

Teddie> So what you are saying about your work methods is:

"if you cant, then the can can?" :)

I see a lot of toilet orientated efforts went into a lot of maps but never thought they would be in yours.

Heh, I have a `mapping` book but I usually doodle in that before sleep and `work` on my maps as I go to sleep (visualising stuff in my head) - when I`m awake I`m too busy actually doing the stuff to `think` about it - it`s the only chance I get. A few sketches ALWAYS helps make it clear where you need to go in a project.

However I do read MASSIVE computer books `in the can` (atm a C++ book and Lamothes 3d game programming book) they can keep you in there for far longer than is humanly ethical. ;)

Teddie, if you delay map release once more, I promise to like your map once when it is released to show my admiration towards you and your aspiration to delay things and irritate everybody. That actually makes one person less to worry about. :D

Do the Can-Can.

Seriously, I really really am comfortable writing and drawing up plans on the can.

I have a stack of architecture books on a small bookshelf next to the toity.

Well, isn’t that coincidence! I care about myself too! So, I wouldn’t suggest my deliberate and intentional defiance of the fact that your map is true disappointment if I am certain it will reflect excruciatingly. Also, I care about you too, so it would be really agonizing experience to watch you suffer over my sworn agony because I am in denial of horrible truth. I am certain I will endure potential disappointment upon eventual release and public denial. :D

Teddie, those screenies look awesomely true to life. I can confirm their veracity as I has the misfortune for several years as a kid to live about 200 yards from Cartwright Hall...

Seeing it again years later here was as spooky as hell...

Have you done much/any of the surrounding grounds/lake etc?

Ah, so it *does* look like it sorta? Nice. Thanks for that.

The outside grounds. Not too much detail at all has been done out there.

I did the nice little flowered area out front with the statue in the center... Some trees, yadda yadda.

Looking at it logically, unless some 'secret-super-elite' mappers happened to enter that compo, I`ve heard/seen nothing from anywhere else, then THIS map has got to win (like I said in the Epic chat last night Teddie, in case you wondered what I was yakking on about). I`ve been to your site a few times, looked at the screens again and it really is stunningly detailed - god knows how you kept it quiet for so long. Anyway don`t want to jinx you or anything or be naive about things, but I just can`t see how this could fail to win (unless above conditions apply which I doubt), and if you do loose I`d file an appeal if I were you ;)

fingers crossed -

Ah, yeah SC. A little bit of both. A little less of one. A little more of another. Equal yet unequal parts of the middle.

You might not like it. Or you might. I hope for the latter.
