Epic and NVIDIA are teaming up with iGames for a 12-city tour to promote the $1,000,000 NVIDIA Make Something Unreal Contest. This tour, known as the "Buzz Tour," includes discussions and hands-on demonstrations of Epic's Unreal Technology-the technology used to create the Unreal Tournament mods that could lead participants to win big money! Participants will also get to play Unreal Tournament 2003 in a LAN party, check out Unreal Tournament 2004, and chow down on the food that spans the four main food groups, pizza… all for FREE. The discussions, lead by www.3dbuzz.com's creator Jason Busby, will feature topics such as using the Unreal Engine, creating terrain in the game, and designing levels. This tour is a great crash course for anyone interested in learning about game creation. Check out the tour dates, locations, and discussion topics per date on the iGames web site at the following URL: http://www.igames.org/unreal_buzz.asp

If you want to brush up on your Unreal content creation skills be sure to visit http://www.masteringunreal.com which contains over 150 hours of FREE downloadable Video Training Modules from the fine folks at 3DBuzz.com

BTW, the Buzz Tour is brought to you by NVIDIA (http://www.nvidia.com/nzone/sources/calendar/unreal_contest/index.html) and Alias (http://www.alias.com).

Buzz Tour brings Unreal Masters to cities around the USA and Canada!

And what about the cities around the Czech Republic ? :D

Alright, alright, I haven't said a word... :)

P.S.: Mark, will there be an updated version of Maya PLE bundled with UT2004 ? Now that we have version 5 out, it would be nice if we were able to create meshes for UT2003/4 in it... :) (or maybe just an updated UED plugin for it)

:) I've been playing around a lot with matinee...did some cool matrix-like 360 shots....where the gamespeed stops and the camera does a 360 pan around the fight scene.

Works best when triggered by the shock combo :) ...looks cool.

Is this just going to be lectures or is it a hands on kind of thing where we all sit at pc's and follow along with the instructor? How long will it last? Are all of the topics that are listed on igames going to be covered in every event? How many people will be acomidated? I'm thinking of driving several hours to the one in Denver and it would suck to get turned away when I get there.

Who will be giving these talks? I ask because I have very technical questions. Will they be able to answer them?

I went to Fragaloploza in Toronto last year And the DE level designers were there giving a demo. Later they took questions. But even they were stumped by some of the questions asked.

And thank you for going the extra mile.

They just don't give a damn about us.

I won't buy the "it's too expensive to organise something there" excuse, because I guess there already are people with enough knowledge in Europe who would be able to make the presentation.

With 3 or 4 dates, you would have covered the whole western Europe easily.
Berlin, London, Paris, Madrid... for instance

Anyone slightly interested in the Unreal Engine shouldn't pass the opportunity to attend such an exceptional event. So with a little publicity for the tour in game magazines, you would ensure full attendance to these events.

legacy-MaverickEIG

I don't know how many people will be at the other locations. I didn't find out that Epic was coming until about 1 hour before it happened when the store owner got ahold of me.

So only about 12 people were there that were gamers. As far as lecture went, there wasn't really a "lecture" per say. Buzz showed those interested in how to use the UnrealED etc...

With all this new information, the VTMs from 3dbuzz, and the Unreal Level Editor, I am armed and dangerous.... :D haha!

legacy-BroMacK
09-05-2003, 06:54 PM
I went to the Atlanta one too... I got alot of questions answered, and Logan and I figured out a bunch of stuff that I had never been able to get to work.

BTW, Logan, see if you can figure out why adding that ball spawn actor wouldn't work for us. I been fighting with that problem for some time, and finally just started copying it from other maps. Thanks!

Also, there were a couple peeps wondering what maps I had done... Not much, but if you wanna look them up they were BR-NauticalRecourse, BR-Glory of Athens, and a bunch of conversions from CTF/DOM to BR, including Fragball Stadium, SunTemple, Chrome, LavaGiant, and a few others.

Hey guys, I just returned from Marietta, Ga., and have only positive things to say. There was a great deal of material covered (karma, matinee, and of course other general level design features and functions. The setting is informal, but comfortably and completely addresses both novices and experienced modders alike.
To answer Sett's question "Who will be giving these talks? I ask because I have very technical questions. Will they be able to answer them?
I went to Fragaloploza in Toronto last year And the DE level designers were there giving a demo. Later they took questions. But even they were stumped by some of the questions asked."

The presenters were Buzz and Logan from 3dBuzz.com and I assure you my friend, these cats can answer anything you throw at them. In fact, they went way above the call of duty to help everyone, and spent time beyond the planned material to answer questions and help with any specific problems that someone was having in regards to the Unreal Engine. ('Know the engine they do', like wow.)

As far as having one in NC or anywhere else for that matter, we drove 6 hours to attend this (from, you guessed it, NC!) and would do it again.

If it's at all possible to go, I highly recommend it.

...i just got back from the new york leg of the tour and it was great! big tanx to the guys and grrls of 3d buzz, jason, logan and angie for staging a great presentation and showing us a good time in our own town... very friendly ppl and took time to answer everyones questions, everyone there was definitely real happy they came out for the buzz tour - great stuff!!

very clear and informative demos (hey if i understood 1/2 of it, it mustve been clear!) on matinee and karma and some map design/terain type stuff AND a chance to play some ut2004 along with free pizza - how can ya beat that?! (well ok so i went out afterwards ;) )

I was at the London Ontario one last night... Buzz and Logan did an amazing job and were super helpful! Damn those guys know their subject... The turnout was fantastic- about 35 people showed. 3 or 4 guys from Digital Extremes were there to answer questions. And of course, everyone got to spend some quality, mutual carnage, LAN time with UT2004.. Onslaught is very very cool... Thanks Epic and 3dbuzz for putting this on for the community!!! :)

legacy-Sett

Yep, it sure was a hot one at Head2Head Games in London (Ont.,not UK) last night. We filled the room and even more came!
http://www.sett.tv/h2hbuzz.jpg
For the 'Introduction to Level Design' part Buzz asked the advanced modders to clear out. That was ok cuse' we went downstairs and played the 2k4 demo! They had it set up on a LAN so we could go head -to-head. I got pics of that too but they sucked so go check out UnrealGrrl's their better.

ONS- is really interesting. It is kind of like a complex DOM with vehicles. The new vehicles were 'ok' there was a 'skimmer' and flying thingie, two types of buggies and a tank. I never got a chance to try the tank but the others were ok except for the larger (3 man?)buggy that kinda sucked. The tank's mesh was poor for a game made in 2003. One thing I noted was the balance of the vehicles to pawns.

I don't think I've ever met anyone that was a bigger booster for modding than Buzz. We finished up around 2130h and he had to be on a plane back to Tennessee at 0600h. Then he had to teach a class.

Props to Logan who I got to pick his brain for terrain info. And the Owner of Head2Head Games (who's name I can't remember:mad: ) She truly went the extra mile to accommodate everyone.

I drove two hours from Toronto to be at this event and it was well worth it. If the tour comes by your parts I urge you to make the effort.

I'm about 5'10" and I'm wearing a large white shirt with Bayou Bug Bash on it.

I look just like this:

Well, I just got back from the houston event... It was a blast. You can learn as much or as little as you want from this thing.. They relate the information in a way that a newbie(me) can understand while still being able to teach the more adept users a thing or two. I got out of there a bit early and didn't get a chance to thank everyone.. So thanks for an enjoyable experience and I hope to see somethin like this again in the future in my area!

Mark, we just got back from the Houston tour.

Whoever thought this up deserves a raise!

It was very informative and Jason and Logan were perfect in not only their presentation, but answering all the dumb questions that were asked. ;)

By educating people like this, you strengthen the foundation of the footprint of the Unreal engine, allowing us to become more informed and more motivated. We then are in better shape to help inform others.

Someone from Epic should help design this as a college course.

Someone from Epic should help design this as a college course.

You couldn't be more right... I WISH my college offered classes that were actually related to the game-design field... Instead of offering only general classes that teach you "theory" about everything, you could actually use the information you learn in a "real-world type" situation.

Nice pictures!

Did you by chance see anything DDOM related? I've been searching high and low for information about the new DDOM maps. How many will there be, what style are they, etc.

I attended the 3D Buzz Tour here in Vegas last night. Trust me when I say that UT2K4 is going to live up to the hype. I checked out the demo and Onslaught is awesome! Buzz and Logan gave me some one-on-one tutorials on Unreal Ed. The matinee features are way cool.

Thanks for everything guys! Last night was awesome!

This sucks, I live in Boise, ID. I don't think a tour would ever come through here.   :(

Just got home from the one here in Arizona. It was great. My thanks to all the people who helped set up this tour and got it going. No pics from me sorry. We ran a bit late since they weren't used to are traffic and showed up a bit late :P

I learned alot from what was covered and got many ideas. I will be passing alot of them on to others who I know who do more than me but can't make any of the events. Once again thanks again and I hope you guys stop by Arizona again.

Last night's demonstrations in Tempe, AZ were simply the best I've seen anywhere. I was impressed by the depth of knowledge and enthusiasim displayed by these guys. I learned new techniques that I may not have tried otherwise and it certainly has altered my approach to mapping. Congrats to 3D Buzz and Epic for a job well done.

the last tour stop in seattle tonight was great. met some more fellow gamers/mappers/coders/modelers/etc, got some onslaught hands on (SWEEEEEEEET!) and had the chance to personally thank jason and logan for all their hard work. and all i had to do was eat some free pizza....

not to mention i learned how to implement karma objects in very bizarre yet useful ways.

again, jason and logan, you rule.

Was at the Seattle (Bellevue) event as well, and it was really cool! Met some interesting people, learned a thing or two about UT technology, and got to thank the 3dbuzz guys for all their hard work. Oh and UT2004 looks sweet!
