question about redirect

reading so many posts about redirect servers got me curious about the redirect server itself. Should it be setup on a different server or is it set up on the same server but just uses ftp instead of the game's normal download ability? just curious. currently I don't have a redirect setup and downloads are s...l...o...w so I usually just manually have my buddies ftp the files down before playing. I'm just curious to see how other people are doing it.

Redirect servers are just plain webservers.
Although you can run the webserver on the same machine as the game server, it's adviced to run a redirect server on a diffirent machine so that downloading won't put a load on the game server.
