View Full Version : Lag in dedicated LAN server, but no lag when non-dedicated

First of all, sorry if this cuestion is apparently already asked in the forums, but I've done various searchs and I didn't find a conclusive answer.

When I setup a dedicated server in my LAN (Windows (2k pro, 2k server, xp pro, all tested) 100mbit, switch, 8 players), the lag is too high, of the order of 20-50ms. Apparently there are no problems with the net configuration, as the pings for all the computers on the LAN are below 1ms.
I tried to setup the server on 2 different computers: Athlon 1.2, 512 MB and Dual-Athlon MP 2000, 1024 MB . Both of them are enough powerful, so I think the problem is not the lack of resources (clean windows installation always).
The most weird thing is, if I setup a NON-DEDICATED server, the pings are CORRECT, no problems at all. This is what is driving me mad.

I tried all UT2003 patchs. All the clients had clean windows XP and UT2003 installations, and all of them are powerful enough to handle the game smoothly.

I'm desperate. The fact is that in non-dedicated mode the pings are like they are supposed to be on a LAN, and when in dedicated mode they raise to internet-like levels.

Thanks in advance.

im just guessing here, but when you have the pc running on non dedicated it only will use one cpu.
and the game will eat up a good portion of cpu power.
you can monitor this with task manager.

And what? I know in non-dedicated mode it will use only one cpu, but why are you telling me that? Have you read my post? I'm talking about too high pings in DEDICATED mode. If both servers are capable of handle 8 players in non-dedicated mode, it's obvious that they must be capable of handling them in dedicated mode (anyway, the official requirements for a 32 player server is 1.7ghz cpu...). And my problem is that in dedicated mode the pings are too high, and in non-dedicated they are normal (against any logic), and my servers have more than enough power to handle a little 8 player server (both in non-dedicated and dedicated modes).

Thanks for the answer anyway, sorry if I've been too rough. I suppose I've expressed myself bad in my first post, probably due to my poor english ;-) (And maybe because I'm hosting another LAN Party in two weeks, and not having a dedicated server... you know ;-) ).
