After uninstalling use regedit and poke around your regestry for old UT2003 entrys. Windows does a horrible job of removing regestry after uninstallation. My guess is that theres a bad reg file or uncompatible settings stored in your regestry.
I hope this helps

U2KT3 Crasher - I am in the same boat. I downloaded new Detonator drivers in hopes of improving my graphics, and now I get the same error message you do. I cannot even run UT in safe mode. Not only that, but other problems are occurring, such as having 2 rundll32s in my Task Manager, which crash my computer every time I try and shut one down (I shut down backround programs to improve resources). Also, I cannot run Norton WinDoctor anymore (and God knows what other software), and cannot even run UT2k3 Debugger because it says I do not have a video card.
Let's work on finding a fix to this and in the meantime NVIDIA can shove their Detonator where the sun don't shine.

Try running Prime95 on your system for a bit, you can get it from the Web. This will test overall system stability especially your memory subsystem wich could being causing the problem.
Also Download Memtest86 - This allows you to create a boot floppy wich will run extensive tests on your memory. Its a great tool that many use, as is Prime95.
Do you have 2 sticks of ram ?? If you do try only one and see if this helps. Aldo install the older Via drivers. Could also be your power supply. Try unplugging any un-needed devcices (CD roms, Hard Disk etc...) see if this helps. The 4600's suck quite a bit of power it looks like its running out of juice when rendering D3D/OGL stuff. Try increasing your AGP voltag by say .05 in your BIOS.
Test 3Dmark 2003 and see if it does the same. This really hammers your GPU so should produce a "CRASH" the same as 2k3.
Run "msconfig" from the Run line and disable any unwanted startup items. Like the crap that usually build up in the Systray.
You could just format everything and start again. This will solve any "Software" issues.
Just some ideas for you.

This is what I had to do to get all the bugs out - not improved, but it is back to the "old" performance.
1) I read the D3D Guru's website you linked me to. He has good stuff about improving video card performance. Even though NVIDIA swears all you have to do is install new drivers over the old ones, the old ones still stay in there, as Guru points out. I checked, and I had 3 sets of drivers in one file!. I uninstalled everything but the set that worked (4109).
2) I installed the VIA 4x1 package recommended for us old farts who still prefer gaming on Win98SE.
3) I ran WinDoctor
Seems like things are back to normal :) except, in UT2K3, I have lost all my "Favorites", "Buddies" and "Chat" configurations. Probably cuz I was playing with the config. file? Also, my FPH seems low, sometime I "skip" frames in a game online - anyone know how to tweak that (no do NOT tell me to update my drivers!)?
legacy-Ut2k3crasher
06-30-2003, 09:41 AM
I have lost the yahoo messanger and kazaa, but now i reomstalled them!
But my problem is,ut2k3 is still not startig,i tried it also with the 43.45 WHQL ,but it really doesnīt work!! This really sucks arse!   Oh god, help me,i want to play ut2k3,i wanted to join a clan, but how can i do that now???

06-30-2003, 09:04 PM
UTkCrasher -
You can uninstall and reinstall your video card. Uninstall the game first, use a "cleansweep" program to remove all the bits and peices. Then, remove your video card drivers and associated nonsense. Then, remove the video card using Windows.
Restart computer. Use Add hardware to add your card. Add drivers from your manufacturer's disk. These are probably pretty old drivers.
Do not update the drivers.
Then install the game. Test on low graphic settings.

Hello, i belive that, i might just have the answer to your all your problems, you said that your comp has a 256 RAM stick of Samsung ddr 333 cl 2.5, right?. Answer this, is your comp's CPU overclocked?, if not, i don't see the need of why you should have a RAM stick with a 333MHZ BUS, when AMD CPU don't work well, with ram running faster then CPU's BUS.
I'd recommend you to read your mobo's spec for RAM specifications and try buy this time around, RAM with a 266MHZ BUS (Corsair brand preferly).
I'd also hope that your computer has plenty of cooling ect.

Ok, so mine had the exact same problem, not even format reinstall worked. So, I got drastic. I changed out the motherboard. I originally had a Epox 4g4a series mobo, and now I have a ECS P4VXASD2+ in there (yes, I switched TO a via chipset).
Just for a bit of history, I've already tried changing out EVERYTHING except the mobo and processor...
I changed it out, and got XP back at full tilt, started up UT2003 and.... it crashed
Never fear tho, I installed the new 4 in 1 drivers, reinstalled vid card, reapplied DirectX, ran it... AND IT WORKED (after months, mind you)
I do believe it is some sort of Mobo chipset problem... It works now tho!
legacy-john.andliz
07-05-2003, 10:16 AM
Coaxfun,
I admire your diligence. I love UT and UT2K and UT2k3, but to change out the motherboard? Wow! I probably would have just moved on to Splinter Cell or GT3 Vice City, both of which have no problems on my system.
Who here thinks Atari should be more responsible for their game? Should a game be created that causes so many problems you end up having to change your mobo to fix it? Should a game be created that is incompatible with certain OS, or has problems with some of the latest video cards? Should a game be created that has really crappy technical support?
Here are some better questions? Why don't other games that use the Unreal Engine, including Unreal II, have the same problems? I have never had more difficulties with any other games, which include American McGee's Alice, Hitman 2, Soldier of Fortune, Max Payne, Red Faction II, Deus Ex II, Nocturne and Undying. Quake III plays fine, too.
At some point the manufacturer should take responsibility. I do not have time to deal with buggy games. I do not think I will buy UT4 right away, but instead I will watch this board. If UT4 has problems, I may see what else is out there. UT is not the Universe.

K this is my opinion on whats going on....
Ive started having this problem 2 days ago and have just managed to solve it.....
some things i should say:
1. There is nothing wrong with your drivers!!!!!
2. There is nothing wrong with your windows version.
3. There is definately nothing wrong with your motherboards.
I have gone through the registries on my comp and have found some very worrying adwarte registries eg from kazaa, imesh and the rest.
Oh so you should know it stops all popups and any frm of advirtesement registries being put on ur comp again its very good and has lowered the amount of RAM that is used on my comp. Ty it best of luck hope ur ut2k3 gets fixed soon !!!
I have got rid of all of these using a really neat program safely and my ut worx fine now.
U can read more about it here (http://security.kolla.de/)

so what?, the CPU's FSB is still 266MHZ, not 333MHZ. reagarless of what type of chipset your mobo has.

To Any and All that may be Concerned -
NVIDIA finally replied, only after I wrote letters of complaint to several purchasers of their cards, such as Microsoft and HP, complaining about the poor customer support NVIDIA offered and the problems associated with the latest drivers.
Here is what NVIDIA sent to me via email - basically they told me I needed to ensure my old drivers were removed before I installed any new drivers. Note that on their website, they say just the opposite - that you can download new drivers "over" old drivers. I believe you should remove old ones first. Here are their instructions:
__________________________________________________ __
New information has been added to your request:
Please uninstall through control panel add remove program prior to installing any new NVIDIA drivers. If older NVIDIA drivers are not uninstalled first, this can cause many upgrade problems.
Note: It is highly recommended that you follow the steps in this section to
completely uninstall the NVIDIA Display Driver software before
installing a new version of the software.
To uninstall the NVIDIA Display Driver software, follow these steps:
1 From the Windows taskbar, click Start > Settings > Control Panel to open
the Control Panel windows.
2 Double click the Add/Remove Programs item.
3 Click the NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers item from the list.
4 Click Change/Remove.
5 Click Yes to continue.
Note: A prompt appears asking whether you want to delete all of the saved
nView profiles.
If you click Yes, all of the nView software and all of your saved
profiles will be deleted.
If you click No, the nView software is removed, but the profile files
are saved in the Windows\nView directory on your hard disk.
Your system now restarts.

Read the second large paragraph. This second email arrived explaining why NVIDIA has such crappy customer support. Makes sense, but it is not an excuse.

New information has been added to your request:
An order number is requested because this is NVDVD software support. We have not received reports of this uninstall problem before. You may have not uninstalled your previous drivers before installing the newer drivers which is causing your previous drivers to conflict with your newer ones. Uninstall your current drivers by going into your Control Panel -> then clicking on the Add/Remove Program icon. You will find the NVIDIA Display Drivers listed there. Remove it from your system. Or you can try driver file removers available such as the "nVidia File Remover" which is available from Guru3d's website. Here is the URL to their website:
