View Full Version : DM-DeadSimple(RJW) [2nd Revsion released]

This is a remake of the classic Doom map DEADSIMPLE. I mainly created for myself and a few freinds for a LAN party I was hosting as it is one of our favorite maps.
It took just over a day to complete and tried to stay close to the original but with my own variations on the map.
There are some slight issues with lighting but I don't think that they spoil the map too much and as such feel ready to release as is.
Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Regards
Wolv34ine

Here is a zip version (http://www.fasterfiles.com/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=212) for those of you who cann't open RAR files.
As a note for the future, always package them as zips :)

Simple, runs fast, well done.
Only thing that bugged me was getting hung up on the square that the shockrifle is on.
Should just be able to walk/run to it, but the little lip stops you dead in your tracks (similar problem as that one funky platform in DOM-Junkyard).
This is a keeper for me. (but fix that shockrifle snag if you do a revision).

It's a pretty good map, aside from the fact that there is no MINIGUN!!!!!! Dude, I really hope that was a mistake... Also, there is no ammo for the linkgun throughout the entire map, it seems. You might wanna paint a few new texture layers onto the terrain and give it blocking volumes also........

Thanks for the headsup on the RAR file and the link for it, cheers.
I am surprised you have found a snag on the shock rifle base, I worked hard to eliminate that, still easily fixed.
I am pleased with it, especailly for a days work and I think its a does a good job of bringing it into UT2003. Like I say it was only for my buddies really, for our LAN. As for the mingun, I dont place it because I dont like it myself, but I will drop it in for you.
I just thought I would release it for you guys too.

I wouldn't say that all maps should have all weapons...
... sometimes thematic choices can be made as well.
That said, I like the minigun.

Are you thinking of a revision? If so I'll wait to download. Sounds like you've done some good work.

As far as all maps should have all weapons, well thats a definately not.
I will include it for the people that want it. Revision should be up soon.

Certainly not, they should be left out because they don't work with the map and not because an author doesnt like them though.

In the revision there will be all weapons in the map to cater for all tastes. I left the mini out as I really didnt think it suits the level.
But if thats what the masses want then...:)

Ok, im working on the revision and I wondered if you guyd had any suggestions/opinions where I could relocate the weapons, or some of them, if you thought any could be moved to at all.
All suggestions will be considered.
So let me know as am working on the pathing again now.
Thanks

I didn't mind the item placement.
I just want the little bumparoo fixed that makes me go "ooomph" when trying to get the shock rifle. ;)

I got this when it was first posted, loved it then, love it more now.
I notice you moved some of the weapons and it really changes (for the better) how the map flows. The ground is more convincing than before with more foliage. Tons of fun!
It runs better than before too.
This ownz IMHO.

Hey Wolv, update the screenies to show the changes.

Love this version of this map. One of the best remakes of deadsimple I have played in a while.
Keep it up Wolv as each map seems to get better and better.
Cheers,
Limmerfoot.

Thanks for the really positive feedback up there, it means a lot:)
The new version has some more detail and some steps in optimization and placement.
Glad most people seem to like it. Most of my time now will be spent mapping for the Unreal Fortress mod. I am really exited by this mod ( after evaluating a few) and work on mapping for it is a real pleasure.
Check out our site here (http://www.planetunreal.com/unf2003/)
We got lots and lots done ( some excellent weapons and some superb models:cool: )
Thanks again guys.
Note to Teddie....you had chance to play it yet dude? If so please let me know what you think if you can find the time;)

Flawless, bro.
.. Okay, not completely flawless, if you want me to nit-pick.
Only thing I could complain about is some bad texture stretch/scaling on some of the meshes. (i.e. around the bottom base of the statue, etc.).
Other than that... FUN MAP/WELL DONE.
It's in my family's LAN rotation now.

Fair point. Should have/ could have made the statue base BSP. Hindsight is always 20/20 though.
Still glad you liked it, I thought it might suit your little LAN setup as well as it does mine.:)
Thanks for the response mate.

It was a very small nit-pick. Hardly worth mentioning, but thought you'd like the feedback anyways ;)
Gimme more small sized maps. ;)

Wolv34ine...
Love the map and I wanted to take a moment to thank you for caring enough about your map to stick with it and make the changes necessary to make it what it is....not all authors do that...thank you for the extra effort...it shows.. :):)

Your very welcome.
I intend to keep on mapping regardless of if they hit the spot or not with everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed making this map as much as I do playing it so thats my motivation.
I thought I wouldnt like doing a remake but I did and I am toying with the idea of making Hydro 16 for UT2K3 too but it just depends on the time I get to do it, thats the only thing that keeps me from mapping 24/7.
Thanks again guys.

Thanks S.V. I t means a lot that you like it. I made it in a day as I say, though that doesnt mean it was half hearted ( experienced mappers will say " A day?! I could have done that in five!!") but I really wanted to remake this map as me and my close buddies have very fond memories of this map ( in my youth... In my youth..) So I felt compelled to make it, mod schedule aside.
Also I hapen to agree, It plays a blinder!!:D
