On the snowy levels when someone dies and leaves a nice mess they also leave a nasty block surrounding it (ie a bug), has anyone else seen this or know how to cure it?

There is a thread about it in the technical forum. (Somthinth like "graphic glitch" or so.

For me it was cured with a patch, but lately (2199) I see it again.

I get this too, but not only on snow, on a lot of textures actually. Like the Sand in face3 and the floor in asbestos and it happens with any decal, not just blood. Mine puts like a pink-ish colored area around the decal. BTW, I'm running a GF4 ti4200 with the 41.09 nvidia drivers. I've always noticed it even on the 30's.

Yes, definitely still a problem. Seems to happen on snow and sand, mostly.

I hate it with a passion. Epic fix now.

Always happened with me too im running Geforce2MX400 on one computer and Geforce4Ti 4200 128MB on other...both have the problem...

Same here with ATI Radeon 9000 PRO.
It's very annoying on DM-Snipercamp playing Invasion, where every blown-up monster leaves a red square on the ground.
This is the reasen why I do not play Invasion on that map anymore...:(

I tried Face3 a few minutes ago and no problems at all. I think Epic won't have it easy when squishing this "bug" since it's not a common problem (i.e. not all people experience it).

What are your texture detail settings btw ?

I have texture detail set on the highest... very odd and very annoying. Try testing it on one of the snowy levels Bifrost etc, thats when its most apparent for me. BTW I have tried various DET driver sets including 41.09 and the lastest official ones... I have a n NFORCE 2 M/b on WinXP but other people have reported these issues on different chipstes and GFX cards... weird!

The Problem is only visible when the Decal stay ist set to normal or high, and decals (and thus projectors) are enabled.

Ok, I tried Bifrost with Textures on Highest, high decals stay and detail textures on and nothing like that in that screenie appeared.

*shrug*

looks like a problem with drivers...

I'm running a Ti4600 with 43.45 Detonators.

Could you post your ut2003 ini please? And maybe your user ini (delete your nick and pass!).

Im Running a 9700 now, and on my old GF4400 i had tried a lot of drivers, and nothing helped.

I have tried different .ini settings. also some of the above mentioned, but the bug is still in. Unfortunately I haven't tested it with previous patches (2166,2168,etc...), so I do not know if it really is a patch-version thing and I do not want to downgrade...

It only happens on "curved" ground, like snow or sand.

Most obviously you can see it in Bifrost, with Instagib enabled (although also Rockets "cause" this glitch).

Just let yourself be fragged by a bot (standing on the snow), thats how it can be 100% reproduced.

Ok, I've tried IG Bifrost and...



it's there... :) yes, I could see it on a snowy surface.

When I tried it for the first time, I was there alone with a RL to see if this happens and that time it didn't show up (even the blood decals were alright). It doesn't happen to me with RL decals, but as for the blood decals, it's true.

From what I've heard/read, it sounds like it happens on any type of card.. gf4, gf2/3, ati radeon 97xx. So I guess it's some rendering problem in the game. Also, someone created a mutator for bullet holes and they said they couldn't do them on the terrain because it would put black squares around the bullet hole.

I think they need to adjust the contrast on the explosion lighting effects. Make it darker by about 5%. I am waiting, as I'm sure are many people who play with decals and projectors, to hear from epic. Well, you know Epic has done a lot of little things. Like the small weapons and music play list. So maybe they will take care of this. AF kills my fps btw, so that's not really anything I can use. I play with projectors just fine, but it's when I enable the decals that I start getting graphic issues. Also, could you do me a favor and turn on dynamic lighting and goto CTF-Chrome and shoot a rocket at the light on the roof in the slanted hallways that lead to the rocket launcher/flak cannon (depending on which side you go in) and letme know if your light turns a weird color. The silver plating around the light, the light cover, on the ceiling turns gold in some places and flickers alittle.

I think alot of coders saw this when trying to implement bullet holes in their mods. The problem seems to get worse the further you get from the decal. It is a glitch when drawing decals using a particular blending style.

I think there is actually something you can do in code that seems to avoid the problem so the mods are using that (we do) - its just that the UT stuff isn't coded that way...

Well i never had the prob with the pink squares, but b4 i installed the latest det. drivers i did get a similar thing on Iron Deity one time while playing against bots. It was a similar thing, but instead of being 'pink' the square around the scorch marks, was filled with 'Diva's face :) It was the face from the character select screen fer some strange reason. This never happened at any time after, and hasn't happened at all since the new dets. but there y go :D

Oh btw, i have my settings up full...... np's fer me at all, but by looking at all yer screenies, it would totally piss me off having that pink **** all over the place during me game :( Does it stay for as long as the scorch marks? Or is it just when the projectiles hit the ground? Either way, what a pisser... Epic need to get their finger out n address this pronto imho :)

Perhaps someone who is deep into UScript might tell HOW a BloodSplat Projector is spawned. (Use InstaGib* on the Usermap DM-Snipercamp to get the effect.)

I just had a look at the Projectors and at the projected Texture. What I thought is funny: Why is the Square actally RED? The Square around the Texture is grey! Where does the red come from? I think it's not a rounding error on light Terrain only, there must be something else screwed, otherwise the square would be light grey or white...

Well, they have more to do with it than Pezman does, since it is part of the game.

I would suggest it. I made a thread about the "no instigator bug" and sent it in to Vogel or Polge (cant remember which person), and he said they would look into it.
WHat do ya know, it was fixed in the next patch (2225). However, they didn't completely fix it and I am about to start bugging them again ;)

I recommend that the original poster renames the thread to:

[EPIC] decals on terrain bug.

Then Epic would be adressed and perhaps they have a look at it (if they already haven't) and then it describes that it's not only blood decals but also the ones from the RL.

After they have looked at this thread it can finally be buried under all these OT posts that occur nowadays....

Not totally sure about this, but since I have never seen it either, Ill go ahead and post..

I believe it was found that if you set anything at/above Higher, that it reverts back to Normal due to no hardware supporting it.

So all you guys running UltraHigh settings are really just running Normal settings.

this either is:

1) nvidia only problem (works fine with 9700)
2) settings problem (works fine with 9700 on highest)

never even seen anything like this before on any system i've seen ut2003 on either. from geforce 2s and voodoo5s to radeon 8500s and my 9700. quit whining over something that is 99.9% user error.

To Webmaster: 99.9% user error....hmmmm...I GUESS THAT MEANS MR. VOGEL DOESNT KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING EITHER? HE ADMITTED IT'S A PROBLEM!

To HS-SPOT: You are posting in this area trying to curb support for a problem you don't even recognize. Load up LavaGiant 2 with the INstagib mutator on and jump up on the wall(on the ledge)of the base facing the spore trees. Shoot the ground around the spore trees, behind them and in front of them. Notice as you shoot the ground closer to you the mark left is a glowing solid round circle. As you shoot the ground further away the circle is starting to be surrounded by glowing squares. You have to have decals on and need to have them set to high to see it better. This is an example that will make you aware of the problem then you will see it more often other places like instagib snow maps. BTW I have 6 friends in town that play and I have visited each one in the past 2 weeks and have seen this problem on all of their computers(2 of them are programmers for selectron).

Ok, well i just tried what u said Gorenox, and although I've never had any probs at all (apart from the one where Divas face appeared instead of the wep splash decal, that one time), I did notice it slightly on LavaGiant2. And then i only noticed it when i jumped up n down, bcuz this caused the polygon to be more exposed than it would have been otherwise. anyway, regardless of wether or not i have a major prob or not, It IS most definately there, and if EPIC can't/won't do anything about it, i.e. support US, then WHY THE F**K should we support them by buying their bloody products, and hanging around their community forum keeping the community the game creates alive?

If you think that looked crapped, load up that bombing run retail snow map..err I am at work and cant remember the name.:confused: Make sure you have instagib enabled as a mutator. watch the ground beneath the bots you instagib. Especially watch the ground beneath you when you are instagibbed. Bleh! Looks awful! Epic Respond Please:sour:

I just checked UT and the pink/blue squares DO disappear, but ONLY if u drop the the decal level to low or turn projectors off. I spose you could do this, but that isn't really the point is it? Whoever it was that said it was 99% user error, has obviously missed the point, it shouldn't be about what the user can or cannot do to improve/degrade the quality of the game, the problem shouldn't be there in the first place, even if u can solve it by tweaking. This means that u either never have projectors on etc, or u have to change the decal level for each map etc, depending on how bad it is.

Clearly a problem in my book, as many people that buy this game won't have the first clue about how to go about tweaking and will just leave it at defaults, where they will see the big pink gremlins all over the place and go, 'Euch! Look at that ****, crap game' etc....

Oh yeh, i'm not flaming that person (99% thing), but merely stating an argument :D

Try standing on the front wall ledge facing the mountain , you are on the wrong side of the base,and the center walkthrough and shoot past the spore tree on the ground. Also load up that snow bombing run map and play it instagib. It's there. by the way that screenshot looks the same on my computer as well.

Why dont you post some screenies of the ground underneath the bots you instagib on a snow map. Thats what I thought troll.

As i have already stated, and everyone knows, the problem can be fixed by tweaking/changing things in menus blah blah..etc .. yawn.... but the fact of the matter is that it shouldn't be a problem in the first place. You are killing me Webtroller. The effect is not going to show up if you shoot the ground directly in front of you. Try posting a screenie where you are shooting what would be perspectively 40 to 75 feet away and also a screenie of the ground beneath a bot you just instagibbed on a snow map.. :haha:

I get this decal-square-bug thing too, even on highest texture detail, at 1280x1024 32 bit color. I use a GeForce4 ti4600.

You guys are right, it happens with blood, and some scorch marks, and looks terrible.

(although I have noticed this since day one of the games release, I am just supporting this thread more, because it is definitely a problem)

30.82
40.72
41.09
43.45

None of them have helped the situation, and somehow I doubt the drivers, or the video card, are the problem.

I was curious about this problem, and oddly enough, it happens in Unreal Championship as well. (UT2003 for the xbox, not that i expect them to fix it on the xbox, just pointing out that it's something with the engine)

I've seen it happen before a couple of times here but never was able to reproduce it when I actually had time to look into it. I don't think it's driver related but rather a genuine bug in the engine. I have a rough idea what might be going wrong though it's going to take some time to track down as I've got a couple of other things on my plate I have to do first. Sorry about the delays.

FWIW, the troubleshooting forum is the right place to post things like this and it also has a sticky thread about bumping ;-)

It looks like a content problem. The gray parts in the bloodspurt texture are "132,130,132" instead of "127,127,127" which causes the problems. Those textures should have never been compressed... Sadly this means that you most likely won't see a fix for the problem in the near future :(

I'd assume most of those decals may be in a single UTX file- so EPIC should post new UTX files to fix it.
ps- I have always had this decal problem - I thought it was driver related on my ti4200- guess not :)

I've never seen this before until the latest patch. It happened once on BR-Bifrost and then never again. Athlon XP2400+ non overclocked geforce ti4200 also stock speed.

It's more than just the bloodspurt texture's grayscale,as it does it without killing anything. If you want to check for yourself, load up any terrain map and fire in the distance at the ground with the super shock rifle.

The problem is compressed modulated textures without an alpha channel. You can't actually represent 127,127,127 with DXT and it looks like the textures weren't completely 127,127,127 before compression which made it even worse.

Yeah, they did. I have a boat load of old ut2003 movies, and there's one that was on some German show and it didn't have the karma in yet or hardly anything, but there were nice looking bullet holes from the mini and assault.

mysterial (i think it was) has made a mutator that makes the mini & flak leave bullet holes!

Hello folks its me that started the thread in the tech,well i have some news,I just got me hands on a new geforce fx5900 ultra and guess wot? all the glitches are gone yipee,wel i havent had much time to test it thoroughly but a quick shot of insta showed there were no squares,I will do further tests see wot happens

Of course... ...vogel said it will be fixed in the next patch... ...and there hasn't been a patch since that statement... ...bugs like this just do not disappear by themselves.

I know vogel said maybe the next patch. Yeah that is an annoying bug. :mad: I don't ever see it though because I play with low details... but the last time I played with high details, it was still there. :p (that was a while ago tho)
