Awesome! THis video tutorials really helped me get started with mapping. If you search around the site there are almost 20 hours of UT2k3 videos for beginner level to advanced.

Keep up the good work guys!

Anyone know what the deal is with their training courses? You have to register to take one, I'm assuming they cost something. Anyone know the price? I couldn't find much information on them on the site other than the content covered.

legacy-Sajre

Cost is FREE! Although, you do need to register on the site, get a username and password. Just click Become A Member in the upper left to register. After you're registered, go to Video Training on the top bar, and then Unreal VTM's. All the videos that are shown are free to download! When you click download, read over the agreement that pops up and say I agree and the download begins.

I wasn't referring to the VTMs, but rather the online classes they offer. However, I did go to the main 3dbuzz.com site and noticed the courses were labeled as free, so apparently that answers my question.

From the course description page:

The Unreal Online Courses are a series of classes, which each specialize in one area of content creation using Unreal Technology. These courses are meant to be completed entirely at the student’s own pace, as there is no set time for each lesson. Each class is meant to be separate from all others, so that a student who wishes to learn the fundamentals of level design need not take the class over vehicle design. The classes themselves are divided into modules, some classes will be comprised of a single module, and some will span several. Each module will be taught through VTM lectures, after which the student will be given completion quizzes covering the information discussed in each lesson. Following the completion of all lessons and quizzes, the student will be given a series of assignments to test the amount of absorbed knowledge. These tests are typically completed within the given program, but may sometimes involve writing assignments as well. After all assignments are complete, the student will have to take a set of final tests. These will tests will cover application of theories presented in the lectures, as opposed to the completion quizzes which are meant to verify that a student has watched the entire lesson. If a student successfully completes the final tests, they will be eligible to complete the final project, which will be a cumulative, hands-on assignment involving all material taught throughout the module.

The classes are each supplemented by their own set of point-based forums, in which a student may ask questions to gain help from other classmates. Each time a student does this, he or she assigns a point value to the question, and those points are then awarded to the first classmate who acceptably answers it. Points can also be awarded at the discretion of the instructors for exceptional work on assignments or projects. Each student begins the class with 1000 points, and can spend or earn them as they work alongside their peers. This system is intended to promote a sense of friendly competition, as well as student help and interaction within the virtual classroom.

Once again, these classes are designed to be completed at the student’s own pace. Since each lecture is a downloadable video, there is no need for classes to meet at a given time. This means you are free to take each lesson whenever you wish, and not have to worry about any deadlines that might conflict with other obligations.

Here's the page listing the courses that are offered: Unreal Technology Online Classes (http://sv2.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/uunr_onlc.php)

The 3dbuzz.com lessons are great, may take a while to download but shows u how to do loads of stuff.

They have actually inspired me to make some maps for this Version of UT (made a couple of maps for UT1 for the Fragball Mod) and i still have some funky ideas which hopefully will make some great maps.

legacy-TseTse
05-23-2003, 08:05 AM
btw, there's apparently some new sets of video tuts on unreal that went out with some graphics mag, with a ton more stuff on ut2k3.

i was OK with max, and OK with UED when ut2k3 came out. i gotta say that 3dbuzz not only helps you get on your feet, but i CONSTANTLY go back and watch newbie vids just cuz i always, always inevitably learn a couple more tricks by simply watching the workflow or the shortcuts (especially in max, my god).

i love these guys... and i hope somebody is studying their impact, cuz as an educational project this is perhaps the best example i know of a, EFFECTIVE free "cyber-university."

True that CTFX. I just started mapping yesterday using the VTM's and I think I'm doing pretty good for having been mapping for two days. The only thing that's gonna be hard to get a hang of is knowing what dimensions to use for the primitives, some practice should take care of that though. Hopefully I'll be able to create my own decent maps within a month or two :D

legacy-CTFX1
06-15-2003, 07:59 AM
ok, thats pretty much the hardest part of mapping, the scale and creating a layout. Some say doing a re make is the easiest way to get used to the editor. well in any case i wish you the best of luck dude.

These tutorials are awesome, they really helped me get started with editing as I found unrealEd to be very intimidating.
Why not include this stuff with the next UT release? I'd certainly pay a little extra for that.

Edit: I found their download system to be fine. My speed is good enough to download one tutorial while watching another. So in effect I'm only experiencing the download time of the very first one.
I watched the first series "seamlessly" this way.

you can just download the kazaalite codec
found here (http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/)

look on the left and click the k lite codec pack. Just download that ,install
and you should be able to play the movies with (wmp) windows media player

DivX 5 or higher. Just install the codec and you will be able to play the VTM's with Windows Media Player

I was confused about what codec was needed too. I used a free program called Gspot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to find out what the it was and it is DivX Codex at http://www.DivX.com (All!!! you will need is to insatall is the codec NOT THE WHOE PLAYER) It will be a checkbox while your are installing the "FREE" player.

Have fun

Rather than installing the standard DivX codec for playing back DivX video (which doesn’t always work with the older DivX versions), I recommend ffdshow (http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/), which takes care of both DivX and (standard) XviD video. It is a free DirectShow decoding filter which works seamlessy in most players, including Windows Media Player and Winamp.

I want to add that many DivX videos I have downloaded have either stuttered or been totally unplayable using the standard DivX codec, even when I opened them in DivX Player (which only supports the AVI container format). ffdshow, however, handles these videos perfectly.

You may install both the standard DivX codec and ffdshow on the same system without any problems (I’ve not encountered any), but in general the standard DivX codec would only be necessary in a situation where you want to edit or encode DivX video, in which the ffdshow filter is not sufficient since it’s for decoding purposes only (and since video processing utilies such as VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) don’t grok DirectShow filters).

yes these VTMs really look great, but how to get stars, to download the rest of them?

hm,

do you really think that these tuts will be included on the dvd of UT2004?

I've nothing read about ... but it will be a nice add-on for all who wants to create maps on their own, because most of the maps
included in ut2004 i've already seen :-/

Yup fairly sure. The 2 DVD version comes with 1st DVD featuring all of the 6 CD game data and second DVD including MAYA Learning Edition and a huge ammount of Video Tutorials for both the level editor and Maya provided by 3D Buzz. Also comes with a headset for voice chat i believe. All for only $20 more, not to shabby.

legacy-egames-berlin
02-18-2004, 11:19 AM
alright,

amazon proposes only the 1 dvd version - will there be a 2 dvd and a 6 cd version too?

I thought there'll be only one version ... we'll see.
however, here in Germany it will take some more time, till ut2004 will be available :-(

thx

2004 SE comes with all these videos on the second DVD, I sat and watched the first 4 last night, and I'm very impressed. I still signed up on that site though to take the courses. I find that just watching the videos isn't enough, the questions they ask after watching them helps a great deal.

He started the star system because people were downloading the VTM's then not helping other people out, which was the main reason he started the site! He also was paying for the servers himself and had to come up with a way to limit the downloads because it was costing him a small fortune. There is an audio download that explains everthing on site, also I believe you can still down load the first download file of each VTM series.

I signed up there

Already was familliar with 3dbuzz but that was for Maya

Now I have learned ALOT about UnrealED in just 2 days.

One day I did the 'first level' tutorial from planetunreal
Yesterday I did all of the VTM's from 3dbuzz level 101 class.. I got a 96% score.

I am now working on the Egypt level assignment.

I just hope the tutorials from the SE dvd will be released thru those classes also.

This star system sux! I started taking some of the classes a few months ago, but had to DL all the videos and I'm on 56k, and most of the stuff I already know since I've been editing since the original Unreal. I think this stuff should be easily available for people that purchased ut2k4. DVD availability was sparse, so I couldn't get it.

I have to agree that the star system sucks. I bought the CD version of UT2K4, because the 2DVD version was sold out everywhere and I think I should be allowed to log in with my CD-key somewhere and download the video tutorials if I want to build stuff for this game.

I *did* buy the game, after all.

Is that official? If it is, then why bother with a star system in the first place?

Update: I pulled this from the site in question.

'Yes, even members who do not have a Star can get the VTMs. However, you will only be able to receive them via physical mail. This is a slow process, and production is dependent upon availability of blank CDRs. If you have ever downloaded a VTM, you will be unable to get VTMs through the mail. This service is provided ONLY to those who have no other means of accessing the VTMs.'

So basically I'm screwed because I downloaded the first VTM. Exactly how you can become a member without having Internet access to the VTM's is beyond me, though...

The star system is intended to 'to promote interaction and activity in the 3D Buzz community', but that is not the case with me, because it very effectlively stops me after the first VTM.

I think the real reason there is a star system is this,

'You can also get over 110 HOURS of VTMs by purchasing the Best of 3D Buzz DVD Collection! Details are included below!'

Sorry to harp on about this, but it really annoys me. I was very excited about getting VTM's along with the DVD-edition of UT2K4, so I could finally get to grips with UnrealEd. But like I mentioned before, that edition wasn't available anywhere here when the game got released, so I bought the CD-version, assuming that the VTM's would be made available to CD-owners as well. This has not been the case, however and I think it's rather unfair.

Lots of good news for those of you who have been enjoying BuZZ unreal training content. :)

First and foremost, if you have been following the "System Reversion" countdown on 3dbuzz, well it ended today. (And was quickly replaced by the DVAS countdown.) But one of the cool things that it brought was an announcement on the front page of 3DBuZZ.com (http://www.3dbuzz.com) it seems that the much criticized star system will be removed within the next 48 hours! (To be safe, expect it to be removed by Friday.) In any case, this means the following things. All VTMs that only require you to have a star to download them will be freely downloadable. This means all the Unreal VTMs that are currently on the site.
No announcement has been made regarding if The Unreal Tournament 2004 Special Edition / 2 DVD Edition VTMs will be put up for download. Considering Epic (or is it Atari) owns the rights to them though, it still seems unlikely.
Member Sponsor VTMs (like the C++ VTM) will still only be downloadable by member sponsors.
Online course only VTMs, like the special effect Houdini VTMs, will still only be available by progressing in the online course.
Nevertheless, this means that the 50 hours of content, or so, spanning Max, Maya, Unreal and more which was available to brand new 3dbuzz members while the star system was in place, will be replaced by 100+ hours. Which is a good thing.

Secondly, if you have been following the free Unreal classes over at MasteringUnreal (http://www.masteringunreal.com) (aka 3DBuZZ's sister site.) Then you may have noticed that the grading has been going crazy slow over the past 6 months or so. This problem has been fixed! The awesome, and super knowledgeable, modding clan - clan|UED| (http://sv4.3dbuzz.com/clanUED/) has offered to help BuZZ with the grading process. The new graders are broken down as follows:
Name (Forum account) - Will grade:

ValHallen (Invader_Val (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=77696)) - Level editing 101, Static mesh design
Mr. SlackPants (Mr. SlackPants (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=49280)) - Level editing 101, Static mesh design
MVP (MVP (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=37046)) - Level editing 101, Static mesh design, UScript
TheVillageIdiot (TheVillageIdiot (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=88090)) - Level editing 101
BtDMH (BtDMH (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=69023)) - Level editing 101
Scope (UC|Scope (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=28968)) - Level editing 101
GordonZero (|UED|Gordonzero (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=117644)) - Level editing 101, UScript
KhaoticMind (MKhaos7 (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=89461)) - UScript

All the markers are extremely qualified. And will do their best to catch up on the huge backlog of assignments. Please be patient with them, they are all volunteers. :) Also, be sure to check out the clan's newest (and first official) map pack (http://sv4.3dbuzz.com/clanUED/smindex.php?page=projects/mapPack&returnto=index.php?page=projects)! It contains some very very cool things. You can download the map pack here (http://sv4.3dbuzz.com/clanUED/index.php?page=aquire). It weight in at close to 130 mb!

Finally, the Unreal Book is finally done too. This news will be posted in the official book thread as well, but is so awesome, I thought I'd post it here too. Lots of good news about this. Firstly, you can read the official info on the front page of 3DBuZZ (http://www.3dbuzz.com), but here is the key stuff. The book *will* be 1,100 or so pages! Amazon's count of 704 pages was from old numbers that the publisher had. (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?s=&postid=687401#post687401) So it'll be a true "Unreal Bible". Speaking of Amazon, the book will retail for $50, but you can order it off Amazon with free shipping for $33.99 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0672326922/103-9883212-5266241) Sams Publishing (http://www.samspublishing.com/) will give you a similar, but smaller, discount if you order off their site. :) You can check out the outdated chapter list (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69471) if you wan't for a small idea of what the book will be like. But remember, this list is many months old and has probably changed significantly! Be sure to take it with a grain of salt and a oversized margarita.

I'd like to add that despite the recent changes, 3dbuzz is still a very community oriented site and encourages you to participate and give back to the 3dbuzz community in exchange for free VTMs and forums. Leeching is teh suck.

Agreed Sigarms!

3D Buzz is a very helpful community to both n00bs and the more experienced kind...

I hate how alot people discriminate n00bs for being a n00b, we were all there, 3d buzz wasnt like that when I started, so I stuck around...(Looking back on some posts in this thread (*shakes head in disgust*))

The grading has really picked up, the Level Design assignment stack is just about gone, the staticmesh is gone, the uscript has quite a few to go... so we are definetly progressing! =]

For those of you in the UK you can order it on Amazon UK at a 30% saving and get it for a touch over 25 quid at http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672326922/ref=pd_rhf_p_2/026-5968675-7082824 great value!

Well, for those who have been waiting desperately for the "48 hours" there is good news. The star system, has been taken down.

thank you! I know bandwidth isn't exactly cheap and it must've been a hard decision to make but I really appreciate the work you guys do...without the star system now I can skip the things I know and go right into what I want...cheers and thanks again for the quality work you guys do...

Enjoy the videos, and yes, there are a couple of bugs in the system right now, they're working on it. Also, please remember, the community was, is, and shall remain just that -- a community. If user interaction dies, the star system can easily return.

I tried to grab a tut last week from the Adobe P Shop section and got a message saying faield to log me in etc. I was logged in though, is this a known bug?

PS. The tuts are the backbone of the community in my opinion.Second to none :)

Yes it is a known problem... in my now outdated FAQs there is a solution. http://demondo.net/#4.05 :)

I cant get it from 3dbuzz and it keeps saying "Cannot Find User ID" can some one just email the clips??

legacy-Demondo[3dbuzz]

Hmm, sorry for disapearing for the past few days. But you know how it is with finals and all... Anyway, I'm really baffled by this. Not to say that this problem hasn't happened in the past, but it has always been a cookie issue. Clearing your cookies and logging back in seems to solve it. (Maybe try brute force cleaning all your cookies instead of just signing out of 3dbuzz?)

Can you give me the step-by-step of how you go about creating the error? The more detail the better. :) I've been unable to recreate it on my end...

legacy-Demondo[3dbuzz]
05-17-2005, 11:40 AM
Like I said, unless you tell me step-by-step how your producing the bug, and give as much extgra details as possible. (Browser, firewall, etc.) There's not much I can do to help.

legacy-JaX2MiLz
05-18-2005, 07:44 AM
well all i did is went to 3d buzz clicked on the link "Download" on the top and down to the unreal icon then theres a blank screen which says "Cannot get user ID" i cleaned out my cookies and i dont really have norton or anyother firewall programs all i have is the Microsoft Antispyware Searcher program

legacy-Demondo[3dbuzz]
05-21-2005, 11:19 PM
Hmm, I've been doing a lot of thinking about this. Especially when another user posted about it (http://3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=107479) on 3dbuzz.com. It seems in their case trying in a different browser worked. (Although they also tried the same browser on a different computer and that worked too.) :-/ Maybe if you try replying to that thread someone else can give you advice as well.

legacy-JaX2MiLz

Internet Explorer, I'm not sure if that answered your question. Why?

because if you went to the downloads page and into the unreal editor vtms most people will get a message that says "Could not find UserID" or something like that and ive been trying to find out what the hell is the problem

JaX2MiLz: That is a common problem. It began when the site got a complete update and facelift. What you need to do, ironically, is log out of 3dbuzz. AFTER logging out, delete the cookie (BY FORCE)! And then log back in. :)

07-08-2005, 11:05 AM
I've been looking at what you have problems with JaX2MiLz, and what Demondo said should work. I'm at my grandmas house right now, which has the worst internet possible, but i get home on Sunday, and if you havent gotten it fixed, ill see if i can help you out. Let me know if it works or not.

legacy-Demondo[3dbuzz]
07-08-2005, 02:27 PM
Yup, what most people forget to do is delete the cookie by force. Something seemed to have happeend when vbulletin got upgraded which caused the old cookie not to delete when logging out. :(

legacy-Eyre
07-08-2005, 06:12 PM

Hey, if you have to spend long time to download things, just get get Download Express - attachement for Internet Explorer, Firefox and others, which speeds up downloads. Worked for me - took me from average of 45kb/sec to approx. 120kb/sec. It has some antivirus scanning options and things like that. It`s free - get it at http://www.metaproducts.com/download/desetup.exe

What assignments, score, are you talking about? Was it the UED class on buzznet?
