View Full Version : Help: UT3K physics are STUCK?

I have an issue that's come up with UT3K in the process of preparing my BENDER model for importing.

The 'physics' slider in the details panel has three settings, 'Normal' 'High' and 'Highest'. But as far as I can determine, in actual gameplay, changing these settings does NOTHING.

Here's how my game plays:
When a character dies, ragdoll deaths kick in at full capability.
No other object in the maps that supposedly have physics move at all.

This is the same no matter what setting 'physics' are on. On the 'lowest' setting, where ragdoll deaths are supposed to be DISABLED completely, they still function at full capacity.

And at 'highest' setting, where objects in maps like BR-Slaughterhouse are SUPPOSED to move (i.e., the 'swinging chains'), all objects are totally immobile.

I assumed at first that I just wasn't looking hard enough at the 'movable objects'. I danced around them, walked through them, shot at them until my ammo was depleted at 'highest' physics, where everthing is supposed to behave dynamically. But no dice. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Everything just sits there, immobile and boring, making UT3K seem as dull and non-interactive as Quake3.

And with my bender model, I set the physics to 'lowest' so I could test him. (I haven't done a ragdoll yet). So whenever he dies, the game crashes with the message that it's trying to find a KARMA ragdoll for his 'death' but can't use it. It should be using his stock animated deaths, but it doesn't.
UT3K still tries to make him ragdoll, doggedly, as if I were on 'high' or 'highest'.

I have the most current version/patch, so don't say "oh, just patch it and you'll be fine". It did this when I first installed. I just didn't know that anything was really wrong until now.

What's the deal here? Why won't my physics slider work? Why does it keep trying to make every model ragdoll when they die at lowest setting, and not let anything else move at all?

Any help is appreciated. And please don't say 'reinstall' either - no matter what anyone says, uninstalling and re-installing has never done anything for me for ANY game, except make me spend 20/30 minutes trying to get the game up and running and configured right, and losing my saves to boot.

Thanks in advance,
Slyrr

If you have a lower end processor (below 1GHz) that might be stopping the Physics Details from working. Go into the ut2003.ini file inside your system folder in your UT2003 folder and find HighDetailActors and SuperHighDetailActors under [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] (or OpenGL if u use that). Make sure both of them have values of True. If the physics still aren't working it's most likely not the game's fault.

I've got a 2.2 gig processor, so that ain't the problem. I'll try what you seggested with the .ini, but I have a hunch that's not the problem either.........

Nope - changing these settings accomplished nothing.
What's the deal here? I'm missing out on some neat options with the game not doing what it should be doing....

Hmmmmmmmm... interesting.... I'm not sure what's causing the problem but chances are it has nothing to do with UT2003.

What are your system specs? Have you upgraded to the latest drivers for your video card? Have you tried out DirectX 9?

I just upgraded to DX 9. This seemed to enable some of the map objects (like the cleavers in slaughterhouse)

But the ragdolls still won't shut off... Not sure why.

My vidcard has all its current drivers. I have a pentium4 2.2 gig system under WinME with a GF3 Ti 200 card.

Interesting... though I'm not sure whether the ragdoll physics can shut off at all... are you sure it shuts off in low physics mode?

Not really sure - all I know is that some one in another related thread SAID that they would....

This is a long, long time after the last post, but even with all the patches, I'm getting the same issues as the original poster, but only at high FSB. My question is ....Can you tweak the KARMA engine so that it doesn't crash, with, or without adjusting the physics detail?

Adjusting Physics level does nothing at all for the dreaded KARMA crash, on my setup. It's killing my fun above 175 mhz FSB, because this board is stable to 181 mhz FSB.
