UPDATE: *newer pics on page two ,shows the progress and what I have in mind, still needs work of course*

Hello fello fraggers, well its been a while since my last map and I used my first three maps for learning, but was amazed at the response.

I have now recieved a magazine (Gamestar) from germany with CTF-marsbase3000 on it, which was my first map ever.
and yes they asked me first, which is very kool. and now PC games and PC action want to put DM0phobos-cruiser on there mags as well. its crazy really because I just started mapping and I know the flaws now of those maps, but hey its all good baby lol

ok, enough of the self affirmation crap, I'm about a week or so away from releasing a beta for CTF-shire, based on duhhh the shire from Lord of the rings. It will have frodo and bilbos place as the red flag and across the shire it'l be samwise gamgee's place.

Just want to get some feedback so far by posting some pics.
I'm determined to make this map a step up from the others in gameplay, I've been good with the visuals so far (still learning of course), but lacking in game flow.

here's some pics:

http://www.aengusfinnan.com/temp-bucky/shirebeta6.jpg

I know its dangerous making a map on LOTR because of the almost religous following and *cough* copyright issues, but I love the movie and books so I thought what the hell.

UPDATE: ops one more thing, the waterfall is a TEMP one and its borrowed from lionsgap (best waterfall I've seen so far) just to see how it would look, I'll be replacing it with mine for the release. (just have to learn how to make one in the mean time :) )

Thanks

looks nice, but the flag room doesnt look much like a hobbit hole yet. Perhaps some chairs and tables on the side? and a nice circular window with light rays shooting into the room.

Also the Fellowship book describes the shire as a land with small hills and small rivers. So having a waterfall may not be a good idea.

Everything looks nice, Fix that flag room, add some more trees and lots of grass and it will be a killer map:up:

Ya its going to have more Hobbit like items in there, and also I needed to have a bit larger hills for the optimization. I think the waterfall adds to it, it wont be perfect compared to the book but I need to take the feeling and do what I can at the moment. I really wanted the indoors to look a certain way but untill I can make my own objects in MAYA I'm left with editer tools.

there will be more , there's a bed area not in the pics and such. this will be the first map I release a beta for, I want to get it right even if it takes a few more weeks. Thanks for the feed back LOF_INFERNO

O ya you cant see it from the pics but there is a circular window, and the rays idea is a good one.

It looks good so far. How close are you to a release date?

legacy-DeRailer
01-05-2003, 12:32 AM
I think the outdoor lightings need some touching up. It needs a little more hue, so it'll match the magma's skybox. Add a thin fog to the map for some atmosphere.
I'm unfamiliar to the lotr world though.

I remember the shire having more hills and houses. Also put in Sam's garden if you could next to his house, if you have the special edition of the first LOTR in the beginning there's an extra scene showing Sam planting some flowers I think to the left of his house. Looks great though. Make sure to make the houses really cramped (have to crouch maybe to get in the doorways).

First a final release date might be 2 weeks, but I will release a beta "hopefully" in a week.

DeRailer, ya the lights are NOT even close to what I have planned, I want the sky and moonlight darker and the lights with more hue and soft areas, like your saying basicly .

ahhh fog, a VERY light mist might be good, I'll try it out. thanks man.

werewolfdaddy, thanks man that was the second map I made, I still like playing it.
(made it in nov so its not that old :) )

Bl4de, ya I am trying to balance the houses and the game flow atm, I dont have the special edition only the first DVD that came out. Also I'm debating about the cramped feel, I dont know if I want people to BE the size of hobbits or actually , like you say, make it cramped.

this isnt really much of a thing to help the design of the map out but to me CTF-Shire would look alot better than CTF-shire, dont know why.... oh well GOOD MAP, just add some hobbit items and touch up the lighting and such, I dont know if it looks like it but maybe make it looks like their a forest in the background. Im not too detailed in the hobbit land  but it would add a little more atmosphere, oh well take and add what you will.

GJ on yet another great map

dude that map looks great. and THANKS YOU VERY MUCH for making it CTF

CTF 4 LIFE!

legacy-DuSt0fF
01-05-2003, 02:11 AM
hmmmmm some hopefully constructive criticism here

it seems too dark, it seem between day and night, and yet not twilight . . . just sorta "ambient" .. make it either cheerful hobbit day or moody evil night . . . or melancholy twilight . . or bright morning :)

also its WAY to hilly, although i understand if this is for flow/gameplay ... . and the hobbits houses are not accurate .. .again, do what you need for gameplay

cant wait to play man, im a fan of your other maps

legacy-Iceburgs
01-05-2003, 02:28 AM
Hey, your screens look great! I love Marsbase3000, so I am really looking forward to this map. My only suggestion is that if you are going to include the nice open area where they had Bilbo's party, and if you are also going to have the banner up, then perhaps you should add the HUGE tree there too. :)

legacy-Buckyfg
01-05-2003, 03:37 AM
Vhx, Shire would be better :P

DKone, CTF is my fav, I cant seem to get away from it

DuSt0fF, ya I'm having issues with the llighting ATM, I cant seem to make the dame sky darker, its a static mesh in the sky box and no lights are there, anyone know how to make it totally unlit so I can work from there? btw, "unlit" in the properties doesnt do anything

I'm going for the "melancholy twilight " :), its not tweaked yet and all the ground lamps arent there. also with my limited know how of the editor I dont know how to make the rooms like in the movie, there all spheres and quite detailed.

Its more like my interpretation of it. the house (only one till I finish then I'll copy and make the other base) is empty at the moment but I'm working on it.

Iceburgs i dont remember the tree, I'll have to load up the movie on my dvd and check it out.

This map WONT be exactly layed out like the movie (not that good yet) and also for gameplay a very flat shire wouldnt be the best.

Thanks all, I've got ideas from you guys and have already made changes based on the feedback.

Hi Buckyfg,

"I have now recieved a magazine (Gamestar) from germany with CTF-marsbase3000 on it"

Yes this has happened with all my maps since tropica (gamestar and other german mags - where you have to give them permission in a `contract` - lol), no I don`t mean to say `me too` I`m pointing out that I *think* they pick almost anything for their mags - cos ut2k3 maps must help them sell mags atm... I`d be interested to hear if many other 2k3 mappers had this happen apart from Bucky and myself?
btw did you buy your copy or was it sent free??

Anyway, your map:

I *love* the theme of the outdoors area, it`s right up my `terrain alley` so to speak, so long as it doesn`t get `too` meandering or overlarge, try to keep most areas of the outdoors interesting (or scale it down if its too big).. but yes it does look great and I cant wait to try it out. The indoors of course need tarting up a little (bsp wise) with maybe some new/unusual custom meshes etc.. but I comment on the lord of the rings angle as *shock/horror* I haven`t seen it yet ;P

Everything else has been said by others above, but I am really taken by your terrain, the little bridge by the waterfall etc (something I had planned for a future map)

Glad to see you back with some mapping BFG!

Hobbit size would be best for gameplay. Otherwise, it would only take one man with a flack to empty the flagroom, that would not be good.
Lookin nice btw. especially outside.

legacy-Helios

Especially the first screen looks great. I don't like the flagroom much at the moment though with the huge amount of red.
I'll be looking forward to this one:up:

First I forgot to put this pic in that shows the other bridge, and for those wondering its NOT a HUGE map, it medium.

http://www.aengusfinnan.com/temp-bucky/shirebridge.jpg

diluted_doug, good game last night. it seems my skills have slowed a bit because of mapping all the time. Its hard to explain the idea right now, I had a few actually, one for making the Shire map better and second changes to the BR/CTF-contact map.(two different maps nt a combination of gameplay, though that would be kool.

sharpfish, They sent me one for free. I think they take the better ones anyway (alot of BOX maps out there ya know), cause they only had 10 maps on the DVD that came with it and there are hundreds now available. maybe I'm just hoping I'm special LMAO.

Also sharpfish, I think the scale of the terrain is perfect for the gameplay. not to big, no marsbase3000 here :)
BTW I always like your maps Sharp. I really like when people do something original and take a chance, like the Tropica map.

Super-Moose, I think your right, I made it so you would be hobbit size, therefore the house feels normal not cramped, too much of a choke point if I make it small.

Helios, flag room is going to be majorly tweaked, its really empty and really RED right now lol. Its there to show what base your in BUT its overkill ATM, your right. BTW there are 3 entrances to the flag room .

bubba16409, thanks alot, its been hard learning but its really rewarding when you get another piece of the editor puzzle figured out. and Exposure is always good :) thx!

Abyss2k, good to hear its not just me, I mean there are great mappers here and it only encourages us to improve.

Silversurfer (named from comic or Joe Satriani?:)) good to see ya again man, must have missed you in my forum travels, I want this to really stand out so it'll be the first one I release as a beta first.

? for everyone, should I make it closed beta or open?

Thanks for all the responses, I have another map I SOOO want to finish, BR-contact, but I keep making new maps before I can lol.

I'll be doing an open beta, seems the best way from all the feedback. Also the map looks alot better now, I redid all the textures for the terrain and made the houses more "hobbit like" and added a kool Hobbit song I found :) its great I tell ya

This is shaping up nicely!.
The only thing im really worried about is choice for skybox. It may feel weird running around these beautiful hills and houses with a huge Lava Swirl above your heads.

:p

I must ask this aswell, But what is happening about BR-Contact!.

legacy-LowGravUT
01-06-2003, 11:34 AM
Buckyfg,

At Lowgravut.com, we run only THE BEST custom CTF maps we can find. So far, we're running 2 custom maps (along with Face3 and Magma - but magma will be gone soon), and they are Prometheus and Marsbase3000. Marsbase3000 is a BLAST. People love it. By the looks of Shire, we will certainly be adding it to our mapcycle ;) .

You've done excellent work. Marsbase3000 is great because it offers several paths to the flags and the vast terrain makes for some great battles.

Keep up the good work!

PS - I love the idea of a light fog ;)

Ya BR-contact HASSSS to get done lol, I will be finishing that right after this gets released. I'll release it a week after probably and Shire will have a beta next week and final soon after.

heres a quick pic of the ball spawn area in BR-contact:
(no connection to my Shire map!!!!)
http://www.aengusfinnan.com/temp-bucky/contactbeta1.jpg
the center piece rotates when you land on it so it makes it a little more challemging to grab:) and those crazy egg shaped things are ALL jump pads.

did all that make sense, man I need more Tea.

Also its an edited Magma skybox, NO lava swirl above ya. I'm not the best with skyboxes yet, I might change it altogether and make it a nice blue sky with a few puffy clouds.

I have a great idea to put the eye of sauron in the distance all flaming e.t.c

the map has been vastly improved since I posted those shots as well.

LowGravUT, thanks alot man. that was the first map I've ever made and took SOOOO long and I swore alot. but it turned out really well, in fact its got better flow that the last map I released lol. This shire map will hopefully be a step up from the maps I've made so far. (fingers crossed)

I'm have editor issues with this map unfortunetly. but I'll get it done somehow.

One thing thats really kool , I made a water pump system with gears that move and is built into a tree. it grabs water and pumps it into a barrel so the weee hobbits can have it after a night of crazy drinking.

This the Tai that emailed me? anyway, I've learnt more about flow after making 3 maps, and this will be better.

There are certain things that are becoming clear, like:

always have a few ways into and out of the flag room.

Big open areas arent a good idea (I mean relatively FLAT areas, unless you have something to drive:))

Make sure the player can do a double jump inside the buildings.

and have various (not tooo many) roots to opposite flag.

one more I've learnt now is NOT to have all your weapons close to flag areas but put them in flow paths and if you want to make sure they go somewhere, put a good pickup in that area.
few other things but I have to get back to finishing the damn thing

By next map I'll have 20 do's and donts figured out I hope :)

Looking good.

Could do with a few more meshes for a few things to make it polished.

The bridge and the rounded door on the hobbits hole. These dont fit in with all the rest of the surroundings. Just look too blocky. If you cant model, best thing to do is create a good brush for both and convert them.

The hole needs more polygons same for the bridge.

Constructive critisism, hope it helps, not a flame in any way so please dont be offended.

I hear ya Red_dwarf, I'm still newISH, and I havent made the plunge into Maya to make my own meshes.

I've already added meshes to the inside and outside, its looking great BUT I'm struggling to optimize it.

Alot of people dont understand the balance of detail to smoothness, its the MOST important part of level designing.

thanks for the feedback it all helps man.

okay bro. I took a look at your map for optimizations...

Optimizations... I see many missed opportunities for occlusions...

Do you have ICQ, AIM, MSN, or Yahooo IM?

Good stuff Teddie, ya I have MSN, but I need to set it up again, I'll get on that now.

I've already added meshes to the inside and outside, its looking great BUT I'm struggling to optimize it.

Alot of people dont understand the balance of detail to smoothness, its the MOST important part of level designing.

thanks for the feedback it all helps man.

No worries :)

Dont buckle under the pressure of people wanting it. Make sure its right first.

I have been working on and off of Coret2k3 for a couple of months now. Problem I have is that I have to get everything looking spot on :(

I have no skills in maya as well, but I have converted a few brushes I have done in Ued to optimize.

I am no means an expert on Ued, but I do know quality and that takes time. So stick with it and keep posting the updates for people to give feedback.

Not bad writing as its 3.00 here and I have just got back from clubbing :)

6 foot 3 and 34 years old :)

Think I can drink :)

Although going to clubs and seeing young little females makes me feel like an old pervert. I suppose its how old you feel, not how old you look.

I feel as though my progression in Coret is slow at the moment. I am really hanging fire to see what we get in the bonus pack.

I laugh every time I kill bots with the Ion of Sauron

Awesome looking map dood

im 1/2 way into maya, thats y isengard has been delayed, im making static meshes for everything (or trying to)

and to some doods suggestion about me using the eye, i will (provided the owner lets me) use it on DM- Barad Dur after i have finished Isengard :)
but it would look fairly out of place in isengard.

Good Work Man!

Hey Neoninja I just checked out your thread, looking good.
Ya I dont have ANY maya skills yet, I said to myself that I had to master UED first. That Eye of Sauron, uses a few existing meshes and a brush. once its done I dont mind you using it , as long as you give me credit for it, like in the readme.txt you include in the level or something. :)

You gota see it in action is the IOn cannon lol, and the flames all move, in fact the whole thing shimmers of flame from the ground.

Looking forward to your map man. cheers

Bucky, the "Ion of Sauron" is f-ing brilliant! Thanks so much for newer screens, btw. What you are doing looks fantastic! Now, it's almost next week (9:20PM Saturday night), so can we expect a nice little beta present tomorrow? :)

LOL, u da man Iceburg. it'll still be a bit, I have to make it a major step up form my other levels. so I want it as good as can be. I have Teddie (author of many good maps including remake of Aztec) looking at it to help me out. even though I'm very creative, I'm still new to level design, I have huge ideas but I dont know enough yet. if someone was to give me a job then I'd learn faster , HINT!!!!!!. I'm sooo sick of web design its not even funny.

I am working on BR-contact (see other thread) at the same time, it'll be beta a week after this is released.

Thanks for the props man.

Cheers

ya 1 more thing, theres so many custom textures and its pretty detailed so far that it take literaly 20min to render (i'm on a AMD 1.3 512ram & G3 ti 500), if your a mapper you know what I'm talking about

Do what I do and take the sections out that you are curently working on. I drag an area of brushes and copy them, then create a new level just out of the few bits I have. That way you can render allot quicker and once done just pop em back in :)

Bucky,

Hey bro... sorry I didn't get back on MSN last night... The movie lasted longer than I thought cuz my 3 year old woke up a couple of times with a bloody nose, so we had to pause the movie...

Anyway, we can chat about your map somemore tonight... hit me up on MSN if you see me online.

Hey thanks alot man. Ya my influence was Majorly Hendrix and Joe Satriani (years spent on learning his stuff, best guitarist easily. the melody and feel he has is unchallenged.and can make a few notes sound amazing or play 100 notes in a min and sound great :).

I'm putting up my last bands tunes very soon, its more real songs than the 4 song demo up there now.

Unfortunatly I dont have the same rig now, I was using a standard strat for the rhythm and a Paul Reed Smith for the leads (awesome tone on those!!) and was using a Fender hot rod deville amp. also was using a basic high end pearl drum kit and a fender bass.

And I had some effects generated from the studio soundman's racks he had. reverb e.t.c

I;m starting to work on some other tunes now, I've takin a few years off because of the BADDD breakup of the last band lol. stressed me out. and I found web design e.t.c have like 40 songs that I've never done and all need work I' will be playing everything and singing on about 7 that I pick.

Hey neighbor! Thanks! Hey, I used to live in the Rockville/Potomac area.

Yeah, 98 rock and 99.1 were cool about playing my songs.

99.1 was my first ever airplay then 98Rock spun my tunes a few times over the airwaves.. (Stuff from my TAOD and VOTD CD's) Then I got more and more airplay across the country for a couple of years, ... then I stopped making new music...

I map now. I can't focus on two big hobbies.

also I'm a little worried about doing an open beta, I'm already getting press on this map on a site I cant even read the language and its not even out at all.

I really dont want MAJOR distribution of a "almost" finished map rghhh, any suggestions

email to people to beta. that way you dont get a bunch of dicks spreading it all over before its done, but you can still get feedback. but you have to do more then like 2 people, so you can get things some people might miss.

Bucky,

I tested out your latest version. (again, great map).

You've made some definite improvements in fps. You noted the problems that you know of and I've seen them.

There are also some additional occlusion problems. Let's talk about it if you see me online.

Also, take it from a guy that used to do public betas... don't. It's a pain in the as$... and your beta maps will sit out there on servers forever... even months after you release a final.

When doing the private betas, definitely make sure you mix it up as far as users with ati cards and users with nvidia cards...

Cool man, Ya I was undecided on public open betas for that exact reason. I'll try and find you online later, its early here and I have to go do "real life" crap

Like the music ? lol, i laugh everytime I play the level and I've played it everyday for a LONG time, makes my want to find a hobbit babe.
