View Full Version : Gears of war mechanics vs. Kill.switch?

I could drag out Winback, but I'm going to try and keep this fairly modern and only reference Kill.Switch.

This isn't an attempt in any way to knock GOW; few action games are (or should be) truly original. Just about every good idea has been used in some form or another.

What I wanted to ask, though, was how the basic gameplay mechanics compared to those of Kill.Switch, the game that really popularized cover and blindfire. Initially it seems to have a lot of the same core features of GOW; obviously not the same story, AI, or weapon set, but the basic player mechanics look awfully similar.

Besides the context sensitive cover use, destructible environment and theoretically more agressive AI, is there anything that GOW is doing to stand out from the Kill.Switch combat system?

Yea Kill Switch had probably the best compared 'shooter' system to Gears of War. But just because the game has blindfire doesnt mean its the exact same... look at Ghost Recon AW, Gears has more of a system like that... diving to take cover and some weapons you can shoot around cover... but yea Gears does have Kill Switch's blindfire... but so does the real life army.

The mechanics look similar because they are based on real life, so really all of these games are ripping off real life

Killswitch was an enjoyable game, but after a few hours it's clear that it probably belongs in the bargain bin. I honestly did get a kick out of the game but there were a few too many kinks in it to hook me.

Killswitch is probaly only simlilar because of a few ideas like blindfire, but Gears takes the idea and turns it into a reality. Its a whole lot different to control than killswitch

ugh, I thought that kill.switch was plagued by several problems (bland environments, crappy sound, poor mission design), although the cover and blindfire system was awesome. it was more disappointing because of how excited I was about kill.switch before it shipped... I was psyched when I heard about Gears using stop-n-pop gameplay since I thought that kill.switch wasted a great mechanic. so far it seems like Epic is doing it justice, and then some!

did you guys play 007: Everything or Nothing? it had a simplistic cover-and-fire 3rd-person action system that I thought was surprisingly fun.

It is true that some of the gameplay mechanics are similar, but gears seems much more intense than kill.switch was, which sucked by the way. Winback was a pretty good game.

I don't disagree. However, this isn't really about how GOW will be better; I'm merely asking if it has any distinctly different mechanics (it doesn't even really need any, honestly.)

i never played kill. switch, but from what i've seen of that and what i've seen of GoW, i can already tell gears is a much better, more polished version of the mechanic. i love how Marcus slams into cover so hard, looks like he's really trying to get there to actually save his own @$$, which never happens in these other action games with a 'back to wall' system...

hey guys lets figure out if we want pennies and nickels (killswitch mechanics)

Or bars of silver and gold (G.O.W mechanics)

I was thinking about Kill Switch and how it seems to compare to this game, but I couldnt remeber the name. It was killing me.

But yea. This looks to be another Kill Switch, except 100 times better.

Rule three, comparing Gears to other games is OT. Sorry fellas.
