*UPDATED BOTS AND SUPERFICIAL COSMETIC CHANGES*
Hi

Wolv34ine here.

After some feedback on how the bots behaved I have re-adressed the bots and I am very happy with how they now work. They use the tower and the other rooms now, this really makes a difference and its much better to play.
I also re did some texture alignment, re lit and re-meshed a ramp and altered a few pillars. All for the better.

So the updated version is there in the first post for anyone interested.
:)

DM-Torment is available for download ]here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peter.cranny/)

Cheers guys.

It is my map and Limmerfoot did convince me to let him post it.
I would prefer to work on it some more and get a few things just how I want them.
I want to totally revamp it to be honest.:(

I intend on changing the whole thing , within reason , keeping the idea and theme the same but introduce some more performance optimizing elements and at the same time add more eye candy.
I want to :
a)Make it smaller, so its more suited for fewer players.
b) Change a lot of the lighting and add a few terrain features.I am already looking at introducing a different "structure" to the architecture and I have some great ideas o how to do it (well I think they are great:) )
c)Not totally happy with the way the bots behave, though it was created in four days for a mapping competition.
d)Add more z axis.
e)Introduce custom sounds.
d) Get that WoW factor the Epic maps have, so you probably wont recognize it when it show its face again.
e)Pick a decent name.Lol.
This is my second UT2003 map and im having a geat time with the editor, things are really falling into place and I am looking forward to introducing new custom meshes using Maya.

But Im probably boring you, I will post again when I have changed thigs to the way I want them.

Thanks again for your kind words man, I appreaciate it. Its that that keeps mappers going!

And you can bet I will!!:D

Lookin' really good! Textures, architecture, etc.

I don't know much about game-flow myself, but it looks like it would be great in this map.

Three things to comment on...

1. Dark corners/areas, etc. Lighten them up, just a little. otherwise the overall lighting is great.

2. Get those towers functional! Some lifts or teleporters would be great to get up there. Add some sniper weapons up there too.

3. IMO the lava flowing from the skull is "ok". Doesn't look natural.

One of the best user-maps i've seen to date. GET IT DONE!

:D

Dude....if you do re-vamp the whole thing. Tweak what you have now and save it!....then re-work it. That way you've got something done....incase you lose interest or get other map ideas.

If this is a new experience for you...don't fall into the "it's not good enough" state of mind, or you'll never finish anything. :)

Some excellent made comments well heeded there.

1. Dark corners/areas, etc. Lighten them up, just a little. otherwise the overall lighting is great.

The darkness of it is something I will look at and when I introduce some "natural" sources of light the shadows and light will add more atmosphere. Have to be carefull though as a map of this sort has to have emmiters as a light souce and emitters can have a detremental effect on some players perfomance. Thats why I was carefull not to have too many of them in a player line of sight. But I will lick that.

2. Get those towers functional! Some lifts or teleporters would be great to get up there. Add some sniper weapons up there too.

I wholeheartedly agree but given the time frame to submit for the competition there wasnt time to implement them. That will be looked at though.Promise.

3. IMO the lava flowing from the skull is "ok". Doesn't look natural.

I agree, the mesh used had even slower panning texture by default so I changed it to a faster one. But it still doesnt pull the effect off, this is an observation Limmerfoot made.

One of the best user-maps i've seen to date. GET IT DONE

High praise indeed coming from a fellow respected mapper.

Thanks for taking the time to make you comments. I genuinly appreciate them.:)

Ps. I would love to hear how people found this map performace wise as I spent a lot of time trying to balance detail/ perfrormance. I have a 9700Pro in my system and it can give a slightly distorted view or what a level will run like on systems with other vid cards.

You just can't help telling the world that you have a 9700 pro in your machine at any given opportunity can you eh?:D

Lol. You know thats not the reason!!

I should point out that myself and Limmerfoot have been friends for 15 years (or more!) now.

It feels like a lot longer than that:confused:

Glad to see some good feedback for this map. As I expected this IS a very good map and there should have been no doubt about releasing this in it's current state. Take note Wolv.

I understand you want to do more to the map and "perfect it" but in all honesty this stands up well as is and you should create a new map, with all the things you want to do and keep producing the maps, not spending all your time on one theme.

Let the map be judged on it's merits and if you want to make it better, do so in another creation. Don't limit yourself. Create more and more maps and the ideas/desires/pleasures will come.

I don't want to sound like a tool, but I believe in the whole mapping community spirit (even though I couldn't create a map to save my life), and if more stuff like this is created the better. The more stuff like this that is held back because people don't believe it is ready, then the poorer we all will be.

Lecture over. Cheers.

I think if the auther thinks the map can be improved, then he should do it. If I were making a map and I released it without finishing it, just because of pressure from people, I wouldn't feel good about it. He is the mapper, and I dont believe he is getting paid for this map, therefore the more important pay off is the satisfaction that he perfected the thing as well as the editor would allow.

Sure the community may be playing it in the end, but it is still his peice of work.

I know that when it comes to my art, its a passion.
I don't just let things die when they are "good enough".

So I ask, why shouldn't this map be as good as it can be?

legacy-Ejen34

Limmerfoot...

You have made your points concise and clear...perhaps I missed something...

Question: Isn't this the author's (mapper) project and therefore up to that person to determine completion?

Personally I feel the shoe is on the wrong foot here...when the mapper is comfortable with release the project should be released and when complete then the map can be finalized and let go for other projects. At this point I totally respect the mappers decision to finalize and move on....but it is that persons decision. Some mappers go thru several revision processes...others never do...personal style and preference as well as the particular project determine this....hard to predict but it is an individual thing intrinsic to the mapper...

Pimping is great but should not be to invasive.....

My 2 cents worth...

Actually, in some of those pictures, the fog looks a bit much. I might be wrong, I'd really have to see it in 3 dimensions. :P

Thanks for the input virax. Yeah some of the fogging is going to be toned down a tad for the release, still playing with how the various zones gel together. I am pleased with how its going so far though.

Cheers

Nice work wolv34ine. Map is looking nice and big, plenty of room to frag, or in my case be fragged!!!!!

It kinda reminds me of an sort of monstarery in a cave, is that how its meant to be?

Anway it looks damn mighty fine i don't know why you didn't post a thread on this before.

Just a quick question how many players is it meant for?

I think some fog would do, just a little bit and maybe some of those flesh columns would look neat as well.

I see what you mean in my post, the nightmare statics and textures do kinda do ya head in after a bit and you have to leave the map. But anyway don't let that stop ya, carry on though 'cause this map is gonna be a winner.

Will be happy to beta test for you if you like?:D

w:D w.

Some nice comments guys, im touched.

As far as the number of players I reckon it could take up to ten, any more and it might get a bit frantic;) .

Bete testing should be up soon, Im just adding the last of the structual details and im trying to use some nice touches as I go.
If you are interested in being a beta tester then please mail me as I would like to take some time to do a thorough test and get rid of any problems or bugs, I wanna see how my efforts on optimizing will perform on more systems. Also I would love to see how it actually plays.

Hey, this map has really gotten a load of extra detail. It looks really great:)
I played the old beta only 2 days ago and already like the map in that fase:up:
A lil question though, in the screens I can't see the big open part on the top lvl, is that still in, cuz I liked jumping around with the lightning gun up there :D

legacy-Wolv34ine
03-03-2003, 11:45 AM
Yes the upper level is still there.
I didnt do any screens of it for two reasons really. Firstly I want it to be a surprise and secondly I am working hard on laying out another level to introduce some really fun vertical axis:cool:

legacy-Helios
03-03-2003, 12:30 PM
srry for spoiling the surprise;)

Anyway, this map is going to be soooooooooooooooooooo great, with that's extra bit of z-axis on the toplvl it would be just perfect:D:up:

Just downloaded, I'll play it later.

Hey did you ever fix your map CTF-Greed? Last time I played that, the map kept killing me once in a while when I jumped, and i wasn't being shot at either. It was way weird.

Later

legacy-Wolv34ine
03-10-2003, 05:12 AM
Neo Pheonix I am looking at remaking CTF-Greed in a slightly different theme.
I could look at that spawning problem ( very wierd one that) but chances are no one would play it anyway as its hard on slower systems.

It will be much better this time, just need to get to grips with 3DSMAX and I will be making that one as good as I can make it. I have some ideas I am really exited about that I want to implement.

Shocked you remember to be honest.:) But flattered nonetheless.

Very good map this, and plays well too.You get some great falling deaths too and the side rooms have a great feel to them.

I like this map

Update for you..

If you have DL'ed the map and thought that the bots could be improved I have been spending a lot of time on them and I have got them acting/ reacting much better now.
I need one more evening to polish them up a bit. I will post again with a new DL link if anyone is interested probably tomorrow night.

Cheers

PS. When I originally released this map I was asked by a member to do a remake for him. I didnt have time right then but I will have some time soon and would like to do it for him. However it was a little while ago ( I remember that he used to host a server)and I dont have his mail adress any more. So if you read this PM me again and I will do it for you.

Hey there!

Not seen you in a little while Fecal. If you remember you where the only tester I had when I first did this map. Your help with zoning was invaluable and allowed me to put some detail in that I wouldnt have been able to do before. Check it out in the editor, I think you will be pleased to see the extents I have gone to make this as optimized as possible.

The link should be up tomorrow, I am fine tunig bots as we speak

Just got the new version and I must say the bots play the map 10x better. Love where the RL is now, on a new platform, it really makes it a great spot to try and hold off the competition. I had great fun on this:up:

Thkx for going back for a second look at the bots, I have a slow modem connection so going online to play is sometimes a bit hard on the old ping!

Seems like a nice map but it runs like crap on my comp. :(

legacy-Wolv34ine
03-13-2003, 08:52 PM
I am sorry to hear that SV. I optimized this map as much as I possibly could. I dont think I could have zoned it off more and I tested it with lots of rigs and it was playable.

It has quite a bit or BSP so if your CPU is not that quick unfortunatley the frames will suffer for you.

My next map will be almost entirely static meshes so performace should be tip top.

Thanks for letting me know about the performace issues though..

Ps. Though this might not be a good suggestion for you SV for anyone with a fast CPU the new Invasion mode on Torment is good fun:)
