The map has now gone out to a few select people for closed testing.

I have just created a new page on my website for this map now. I hadnt done it before as I didnt know where this map would go, but I am definately going to finish it now. :)
So a big thanks to everyone for the nice emails and feedback here. I appreciate it :up:

Thanks to Jeff for giving me feedback on the map and how its progressing. He is a big Coret player so when the beta is released it should be quite close to the original flow.
I have included a progress table so you get an idea of what rooms are being worked on and finished to a beta standard.

but I want to place it in the correct forum now.
Anyhow, I would appreciate it if people could carry on letting me know what their likes and dislikes were about the original and how I can improve over it.
Hopefully there will be an Alpha available soon but it will be very basic. I am just throwing ideas around at the moment. The lighting is very basic, the textures are just thrown in and not aligned and Meshes are placed in.
Saying this it doesnt look too bad for an alpha.

Very good! Me liked coret, hehe and my gues is that I'm even going to like it more now.
Looking at the screens this map looks amazing, I especially like the lower corridor looking down to door in distance screeny, it's the most moody and looks very proffesional. The other shots R great too, but some spots are a little to bright IMO (to bright to be as moody as the first shot, but maby good for gameplay cuz you'll spot the characters easier I don't know).
Anyway, good luck, I can't wait for this map:):up:

looks amazing dwarf..i've been following ur map since ur first post (except u haven't made ne updates on ur site :()
i know u probably haven't dun much work here but in the flag room...make sure that the shockrifle is placed correctly...In the last Coret remake i've seen the shockrifle is placed in a way that kinda stops u from using it to stop flag carriers....maybe darken the lighting a bit..but not 2 much
'n jus for fun add some karma lights :P

So any suggestions as to what you would like and what you wouldnt like in the map?
I am considering placing a lift or a couple in the map to have lift jumps etc.
The flak room is further away from the main map room now due to the way I have designed it. Its not a great deal further but enough to place a lift in the corridor before the main pillar to the flag room. This I am thinking of having as a great way to escape and fool someone or get to the upper corridors just that little bit quicker from the flak room.
Also the main area may be different. I have already seen a reactor mesh that I may use for the central bit and have all the action around that.
There will still be a upper area where the amp was but instead of having a moon outside I want to have glass in that area between girders that looks out over a snowy landscape.
I want to set Coret as an abandoned industrial factory that has been taken over for the UT2k3 games. I will put up a thread on the main forum as I want a sort of story to go with it. Also a brief destription that will go with the animated map at the start of the game.
So anyone up for writing a small background story?

In 2301 the Lindari Corperation moved in and bought over the Coret Facility in order to provide a new unique battle ground for the Tournament. Coret was one of the first non built for battle arenas, and the very first for Capture the Flag. Since its debut Coret has been known for its high speed action fights and has lead to the rise and down fall of many. After being shutdown for the past 2 years inorder to renovate it, it is back and looking better than ever"

Did you made it totally new or did you exort/import it and redesigned it ??
I hope there are some maps left to redesign until I know the Editor better.

scribbled down the general layout on paper and also have Ued2 open with coret open to try to keep the map similar.
Finding the meshes that work right and getting the brushes the right height has been a real ball ache.

Oh!! So you made it brandnew !!
Do you know how to change the size of a mesh and also of a brush. Because if i made a cube for example I must size it before I click on the cube button.
And how did you find out the right correlation ?? Because when someone imports a map for UT2003 the maps are too small. Thats, I think is the hardest thing to try out.
I cannot await the ready Coret-Map!! Really Nice!

Nah, its gonna take a bit to get some sort of an Alpha together.
At the moment I am playing with ideas that change daily. Once the basic design is there and a few selected people have gave it the thumbs up a beta would be available within a few weeks after that.

One thing I hated about the original was that I always got turned around...
... with the flag-base radar, hopefully I won't do such noobish things, but I know that I, at least, like those handy team arrows...

nice goin red....IMO i think u should expand the level...not alot. But you know where the RL is (in the little incave) well personally in the room that connects it i think there should be another path out there that kinda goes around. Im not sure how much u wanna chnage the level but since this isn't a port but a new level I think you could try it. (ps. me wants to beta :P)

How come everyone is saying less light? I was thinking some of the shots looked kind of dark already. One of the things i loved about the old coret was just how much light there was. As far as ut2k3 maps, a lot actually seem dark to me, but one that got the lighting right was Chrome. Lighting similar to that would be great! OF course, i trust the map creator to do what he thinks best as those screens look amazing!

Really good-looking but I don't like the concrete wals in pic 6, as well as the concrete pillars in pic 9: concrete doesn't seem to fit the high-tech theme of this sequel IMO... You may find interesting to fix this by simply changing the skins/texs... Some BSP curves can be better with more polys but this depends on the FPS of course...
Otherwise, the overall atmosphere's pretty nice, especially when I consider the fact it's an alpha :up:

I think you're mistaken. The map never was put on any server, it's only about 50% complete (no mid area, no flag room), and can't be played in CTF. You were either a) playing a different coret remake, or b) are totally confused.

It looks to be the best recreated out-of-box UT map yet.
I will definitely give this one a go when its ready.
From looking at the screenies, the lighting needs some work but other than that it looks good. The use of static meshies really keeps that "Coret" look.
I guess I'll comment more when its done and I 've played it...

Havent had much time to do allot to the map in the past few weeks :(
Although I now have sort of finalised the upper corridor as it now has more space to jump in height and a little more in the width. Had a nightmare wth the static meshes I created not lighting so I had to undo all I had done which ticked me off a little :(
As for atmospehere, I have ideas about that. Its hard to put windows in along the corridors as I am intending the map being underground, but the main upper windows looking out should still be there with a nice little twist at the udamage.
I have added just a touch of fog to the level as it gives the impression of a steamy environment.Dont worry though as its very think and I have used a very dark grey to achieve this.
I will post some updated piccies tonight if I can get some done.
Again a big thanks to Gradient for editing me some of the models and textures :up:

I'll say again, and at the risk of getting the old "rolleyes" for repetition....
This is the best looking Epic UT map remake I have seen so far. Much better than that Cliffy Ownage Liandri.
I just hope the lighting and the performance is up to snuff in the end. Make sure all the optimizations are there!!! Zones and antiportals!! (too many maps without this basic stuff I have seen)

Coret was one of my fav UT maps, from the Demo, and I'm happy as a clam you're putting out the new one.
The other one by the DBOZ guys looks *blecch* it's an exact port, which is ridiculous I think because who wants to play UT2k3 with UT level graphics?
This re-make is how they're supposed to be done, and it's looking AWESOME bro. None of this exactly-like-it-was-in-UT crap. Good job!!!11

That long Cooridor shot with the door at the in remindes me of that scene on Lost In Space (The new remake, althought I hated it) Where the spider things are swarming and The robot and the other military guy mow them down to cover their retreat. Did you get in inspiration from the Alien movies or any other movie that has space stations on it?

from the updated pics at ur site, i see that the upper hallway is wider, but , i dunno if its still anold pic - but after that 2nd ram- it looks like a tight space to fit(im talking about the entranceway to the top floor)

Try to reply to a few here.
trogetta - Yeah, new rooms will be in. Already one small one in the main corridor. Also the main central area will be quite different with a few routes to get there plus different heights on walkways for some good fight action and sniping.
There will also be a few secrets in but I havent thought what yet :)
SealClubber - The corridors are wider and also heigher now. Check the link out in the previous post I made to see examples with a player in to show scale.
There will be a tighter fit where the entrances are to the upper and lower sections, but it just looks crap if I make it massively wide :(
FromZero - Nah, wasnt based on anything other than trying different brushes and meshes and see what would work. Will have to dig out the DVD :bulb: I have kicking around to see what you mean.
This will take a while to even get to a beta stage as I spend time doing something to then decide it doesnt work or I dont like the look of it :( Its taking a huge amount of my time and my girlfriend isnt too pleased so I have had to slow down now.
Thanks for all the interest, I will keep replying and updating as and when new areas are started/finished.

I'm still looking forward to this. =] Looks like it'll be great, keep up the good work. The only thing that kinda bugs me from the shots is the one showing the concrete pillars in front of the entrance to the flag room. Its obvious where the static mesh of the wall gets cut off by the pillar, so it looks kind of icky. =\ That's not really a big deal, just something I noticed. Map in all looks awesome though, I'd love to Beta test if you end up needing any more people.

Have been a busy over the christmas period. Done a bit to it and added a few meshes in but I needed one of the meshes editing and the person who has been helping me couldnt do it so I am having to have a rethink.

This was my favorite map for UT hands down. I think it was even in the demo right?
Cant wait till release, "I am no means an expert on Ued" you posted this in my Shire thread, Well to me you are an expert on it.
I guess its all relative, you get to a certain level and then find theres more to learn.

Will we be able to wall jump off of anything in this map? Thats something thats been quite annoying. Orbital is a good example of this. You cant wall jump off of many of the walls:(

It might have something to do with blocking volumes, but I'm not sure.
The volumes are good for keepin gyou form getting snagged, but terrible if you want to wall jump. They might interfere with the secondary goo glob separation effect too, but I haven't really tested it (just a theory)

This map looks great!
For some reason I missed the updated screen shots awhile back.
So now I'm drooling and hoping this map comes out soon.
Looks like it's gonna be great for game play.
I managed to miss thoose screens to :D :D :D
This is without doubt the map that tops my waiting list.
So great to see that people remake good old maps for UT with UT2k3 style.

it will really suck if this map doesnt play well on low end machines or has some type of problems with it...cause we are waiting like 6 months for this map (exagerationx10) hoping it will live up to its predecesor.

Oh well, good news that you are gonna finish it, its just that I miss Coret so mucj and this map is still the one I have the biggest desire for atm. But great to hear that you havent abandoned it cause then I would probably suicide or something.

The new ctf maps are hard to run on my comp. There are more bots than usual. I thought that was why.
Invasion and mutant are really cool. Haven't tried the combos yet...
Which one was drerary?
Did it have a redeemer inside a column of lava and to get it you had to press a button?

I finally reinstalled UT2k3 on my machine yesterday :)
First time I opened Ued3 in 3 months, so I have got past the first hurdle. Now I should start work on it again. Did about an hour on it yesterday so hopefully I should have it finished this time next year ;)

Seriously I am liking some of the new textures and meshes. I have already replaced a few meshes which make it look allot better.
It looks as though my contract at work will run out the end of this month so I am all on looking for another job at the mo. That said, if I dont find any before the end of the month I will have a lot of spare time on my hands to complete the map :)

Starting a map is tons of fun, finishing it can be hard as hell.
Difficulties are: Growing tired of a map, keeping the map coherent and fitting as a whole, maintaining the same amount of detail everywhere.
Once you're over the geometry part the end is in sight and then you just need to add the finishing touches.

Sorry you guys, I know its taken ages for me to do this. One thing or another has led to me not working on this for a few months now.
I recently lost my job as my contract ran out so the good news I suppose is that I have a bit of spare time on my hands.
That said I am still busy trying to find work but I am hoping to get a very basic BETA out within the next few weeks. This is mainly to see if I have the setup and size right. Also bits that everyone doesnt like will more than likely be changed.

You might try out the other tracks that came with the DE BP too,
just to see if they fit the theme better. I am partial to Level15, but I am not sure how it will blend with your map.
Maybe Level9 or Level7 ??? Try them and see... Level7 has a nice continuous effect that is great for running hallways.
Level16 and Level11 are also good (although Level16 may not fit the map either...)

When I sqay done I mean towards the beta. The lighting is only scetched in at the moment and there are things like textures, meshes and blockers, etc that need to be added or redone.
That said, I am just trying to get a playable map that people can give me feedback over first.
I have a couple of hardcore Coret nuts :) that are helping with what I have so far. Upper hallway they want a little higher and wider so thats going to be done. Plus I have been a bit sloppy with brush aligning so everything is going to 32 blocks now.
That said what I have isnt too bad and have had good feedback from these guys so things are looking up.

Well when leaving lower hall through the door you can choose right (minigun) and left those few stairs with health on the right side that leads to the sniper and ut ripper. That hall is what I meant :)

Right now I'm mostly working on redoing parts of the lighting as well as adding more details to it.
I'm also gonna adjust the top corridor, but that's gonna be a pain :x

I think Joe is on to something. The maps for 2k3 have been for the most part ah -sucky.
The reason I think that is -
A. noobies making they're first maps. And that is ok. You hafta start somewhere.
B. UT2k3 is hard to map for. The maps that come with UT2k3 are done by pros. With a mapper,modeler and a 2D artist minimum working on a single map. So it is no wonder that user-made maps suck in comparison.
B.(b) Custom StaticMeshes -I belive that this bogs many down. Mapping and modeling may use the same skills, but they are very different disciplines. Terrain - while fairly easy to make, it is just another thing that new mappers feel that they need to put into their maps.
B.(c) Textures- in UT1 tex. were super easy. Just make sure that they were powers of 2 (128x256) convert to .pcx then import done! UT2k3- .DDS .DTX,2,3,4,5? oi! import? export? Read this, D/L this from Nvida. jeez, more sh@t to read.

That's a left-over from ancient times :D
Back in the days you needed like 4000 posts or sumtin before you could have an avatar. But back then the forum didn't support avatars by default, so the admins hacked it in there. So I got my top-avatar back then.
Then when they upgraded to a new version of the forum they had avatars built-in. That's my lower avatar :D:up:

A. noobies making they're first maps. And that is ok. You hafta start somewhere.

You have some good points there. I've known/guessed this from before UT2003 even came out. When I was reading up on the game and things like static meshes came up I already had a feeling 'original' levels would require modeling skills, etc.
It's however possible to make good maps on your own. But then you will most likely be using standard meshes (which are good and can be reskinned btw ;)) and either put out a half-decent map or a decent map but then you put in a lot of time. I know :D

The main problem is that everyone has a different vision on the things and maps usually reflect that. So if the entire team working on 1 map does share a common idea then it could work.
Then we could make a pipeline work here.

At this moment in time I need help on fixing a few things.
If work was started it would make it hard to swap between I agree.
To explain its like me wanting someone to paint an idea I have on canvas and get them to work and draw/paint to my style.
Its hard.
I am also a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to visuals. Now I may up the FPS due to this but that will be sorted later ;) For now I just want to try and get my ideas on the canvas if you understand me.
As far as I am concerned the G.o.a.T. is going to attempt the hardest part of the map. Redoing the top corridor to a bigger size. This will be the sole reason for me to continue as I have done this bloody corridor 4 times myself. So big thanks to the G.o.a.T. as this project would be dead and burried if it wasnt for him.
Once I have everything down and we have a beta then the changes can be made.
Basically I have done 80% of the map so far, I just need help in repairing bits while it gives me incentive to carry on and finish it.
So hopefully it will still be my vision. Willhaven will also give it the final treatment which makes me feel pretty good about the map being to peoples taste and playing well. Willhaven has worked on a few major projects for companies and is a bit of a pro. He is also a bit of a perfectionist like myself so hopefully everything will be spot on.
So thats it for now. I will post a whole host of new pics when I have something new.

A bit of pro, that's an understatement imo :D
He gave me lots of feedback on my EgyptianArena][ as well provided a bunch of new ideas (such as the breaking floortiles, the rope-thing,...) which I simply didn't think of :cool::up:

i saw them working on it and forced my way onboard and made a lot of changes...
turned out to be a great CTF map...
was fun working with more than one person too..
because when youre stuck... you just ask someone else for their ideas
but yeah... i will give this map the same going over as i gave your map GOAT... maybe even more hands on than i did with yours (if theres more optimization to do that is)
coret cant be done in a ****ty manner... im going to see to it that its done justice... but it looks like red is doing a great job of mesh selection and placement to emulate the old coret style with the new details. i like what i see so far a LOT.

Hehe, yeah. CTF-Deck16]I[ was a hassle map and no mistake. Can remember when the original GTF were screaming for it and we still had to fix a few issues. Man I had a real headache that night and didnt get to bed while after 3 :(
I am happy to report Mr Goaty :) has started work on the upper corridor yesterday and the Coret guru gave the new size the thumbs up along with the adjustments I did on the flak room.
I redid the lower corridor to suit the new upper size as the floor window was out of alignment.
Will do some more work on it today.

The upper corridor has been fully rescaled.
Now we need to adjust some meshes and stuff to fit the new size :bulb:

Just gone 12.30 and I have finished redoing and adding all the brushes in to the top corridor. I have now aligned them all and have put basic textures on them.
I am looking at an alpha release maybe in the next two weeks.
This will be only to test the flow of the map. Any visual changes or dislikes will also be done for the first beta.
Things are moving on now :)
Gonna try and do some work on the central area tomorrow.
Just thought I would keep anyone who is interested updated as I know its took a long time for me to get back round to doing this map :(

Willhaven owns. He is, by and large, the person responsible for me getting into mapping. I've been playing his **** since DM-StrictlyDiesel and loving it. I think the two people I aspire to be like most are him and Plutonic.
They don't publish much, but when they do, get ready, 'cause you know it's gonna be top quality.

Strictly Diesel was my first OMFG map that I saw :) It was the first map I messed around with in Ued as I wanted to mess around with pathing, so I guess Will is responsible for me mapping too.
Best not tell the girlfriend or she will castrate him, for all the hours I am at the PC :)

Dont worry, from the feedback I have had they said its spot on bar the top corridor. Thats been changed now so alls well I hope.

I was just thinking, on some of the areas like the angled corridors you can see a door jamb. Now For the sake of flow I am thinking of placing a 45 degree angled blocker there so you dont get stuck when running backwards.
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this for some of the obsticles in the level. I have tried to keep it to a minimum but there are still a few.

put an angled blocking volume to keep yourself from getting snagged on ANYTHING
you shouldnt be able to get stuck anywhere

very nice job on this man, almost all the parts look like the orignal game....theres a few i seen that didn't....if everything was like the orig, it would be amazing....but besides all that....it looks hella good
