Ok basically this is a bottom-up from scratch remake of Nyleve, the second map in unreal when you come out of the spaceship. It was really cool seeing that for the first time, and what the unreal engine could do for the first time. I wanted to sort of re-create that event in ut2k3. I have been planning to do this for awhile before ut2k3's release.

Work on this started pretty much the day after the game was released, so it has been going for around a month so far.

Nice dude, looks really great. Pleased to see some serious mappers out there taking there time on their maps. Take your time and release it when u r ready, its looking wikid. Keep up the good work ;)

i cant believe my eyes...really, and im not one of these guys who just say woak uber cool and other **** like that at every ugly screenshot they see...well your mapping is stunning, the last 2 indoor pics look absolutely umbelievable..professional work, u have some real talent...also your idea is nice but with yoiur skills i think you really should go for something completely yours...im really impressed..and im never impressed..

Thanks :) This is actually the first map i've really spent time on, I've done some stuff for UT and Unreal even but it has never really been finished or released.

I'm making sure this one gets released though :)

I may release a beta in a week or two, but the map should be done around December.

Cool stuff. I remember playing that map in UT and in Unreal.
In UT it was an Assault map and had a Stone Titan in it. :)

Absolutely stunning.
You have pretty much captured the atmosphere perfectly. The feeling you get when you are looking at the pics inside that room, is just amazing. You have some great skills, and a good eye for details in the right places.
If I were to improve anything, I would maybe scale up the terrain textures on the exterior areas just a bit.
But other than that, this map is rockin, and I cant wait to play it. :up: :D

Its a bit hard to scale the outdoor textures up as when you look at them from far away you see the tiling, but when you're close to them its fine. I'll have to add a few different textures to the terrain so that when you view it from far away you dont get that tiled texture as you would with one single texture.

Its... beautiful... I remember seeing that level in U1 for the first time and it blew my mind... this comes close.

Also, am I the only one who thinks that the original image had more... mood? It was darker or soemthing... I dont know, my friend pointed it out ther other day, the textures under the new engine look more cartoony.

I would sell my soul to see all 40 maps (or were there 30?) of the original SP Unreal redone in this engine with brand new scripting for an SP mod for UT2k3.
(Well not exactly my soul, but I WOULD REALLY LOVE TOO SEE THAT....wait, I have davidM's email lying around somewhere ):D

Considering the size of the original level, I foresee problems in the flow... have you made/added more passages for the connection to the tarydium mines from the Nyleve canyon???

Secondly, you may consider a CTF version after this ones done.

I remember how I re-acted when I saw the second level in Unreal, with my brand new Voodoo or Voodoo2 (whatever I had :p ) I felt like...wow :eek:

Hopefully this will do the same, its a DM map?
Shouldn't it be good for a Bombing Run or DOM map?

Here's why -> DOM : Inside the waterfall on top would be the A point (make a passage way to get there) and inside the ship or outside where you killed your first beast in that Nali house would be B.

Here's why -> BR : The water woud make for a cool underwater fight for the ball and then shooting it out letting it fly waaaaay above the sky would be extremely cool :D

WHat I think is best ->
DOM : Because there are so little maps for DOM and especially user-created maps, you should get it started ;)

I haven't done any of that yet, so far it just has all the things that the original had in the same places. I know there are going to be some flow problems with any sort of CTF or BR map, so thats why it is DM so far. I may add more tunnels to add flow though, I'll have to see.

Thats actually a very good idea with the DOM, as DOM is less dependant of flow on a map. I also have some good areas that would act as good control points. It would create some nice play areas in between the two outdoor areas in the mine, and in the mine parts where there would be control points.

I've also noticed that alot of people dont like DOM in ut2k3, so i may make a DM version and a DOM version. But a DOM map sounds like a very good idea.

The hosting I was using sort of died (can still access the files yet cannot add new ones), so i have most of my screenshots on there and was able to use a friend's hosting to post two 640x480 "teaser" ;) shots here.

Also keep in mind that the ship and the nali houses are basicaly placeholder brushes/meshes. I will be creating high-res meshes of these in lightwave for the map, i just have gotten to that yet.

Sweet, that level is really one of my fondest gaming experiences. There was really a sense of awe as you stepped out of the ship and into the (at the time) impressive nature area, for lack of better words. Can't wait to see it done. =]

You better include the same ambient sounds and music.....

*gives it his thumbs up and drool bucket of approval*

Make sure you have the birds flying, nali rabits, rabid fish and other things down to a T... also make sure that water fall looks dandy with the nice splash/wave effect from the original.

TAKE YOUR TIME TO MAKE IT PERFECT!

Er... The only animal in UT2003 is that shark thing, and it's just a decoration (it won't attack). Sadly, if any animals are to be included they have to be modeled and coded. Not that it can't be done, but it's a bit too much to ask for.

I have most of the ambient sounds all in there, they were imported into Ut2k3 apparently. I also converted the original .s3m music to Mp3 and then to .ogg, and thats in there as of now.

That kinda wont work as it will not loop itself. You gotta get the .wav or .mp3 file to loop itself before you convert to .ogg

Great looking work! I really liked shot F, with the entrance to the mines. Gloomy and a perfect capture of the original Unreal atmosphere. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Most of your work looks cool, but that last pic looks a bit dodgy with the triangle bolts. Keep it up though i just think it needs a bit more work.

Yeah, and still, I was so impressed by Unreal that I pre-ordered UT without hesitation... and I was so impressed by UT that I pre-ordered Unreal II and UT2k3...

Hey I didn't make the triangle bolts. DE did :) (if you're referring to the static mesh)

Looks very good. What kind of PC do you have? Must be a strong system....

to the static mesh thingy: Try to use your own in every situation, cuz the DE meshes suck :/

BUt other than that I'm looking forward to playing it!

The DE meshes look great here. It's a common misconception that amateur mappers should create as many static meshes as possible. The only people I see that decides the DE meshes are terrible are the people at the corner stone of the mapping community, the UT mapping community that is and the last really good mapper who used almost all his own static meshes was Tonnberry and to be completely honest his map, Alpu2, looked pretty bland.

In this case some of them are OK, but I still don't like most of them.... it is my personal opinion tho.

I was originally running this with 256mb of PC2100 DDR, and ut2k3 was very laggy on any map, so i recently put a 256 stick in so im up to 512 and everything seems to be fine.

Aside from that im on an athlon XP1600 and a geforce 4 ti4400.

About the static meshes, they seem to work fine with me. I have to add different textures to almost all of them though, as none fit my map. And I'm also not a very good modeller :)

I will create meshes where I need them though.

Your mapping skills are amazing but if you really want this to be cool you should wait until Unreal 2 comes out and then make a conversion through there so you can make it singleplayer!

By the way I'm probably going to be remapping the opening prison ship level once I play it through again in U1.:D

Oh man, this looks great.

I'm not sure how well this will play as a DM, seeing as how it was intended for linear single player progression, but it looks amazing. Hopefully we can expect this kind of graphical amazement from U2.

Overall, maybe try adding in a few new "cave halls" to make the connectivity a little better and give the map a DM flow...

All in all, looks amazing bud! I wait with extremely baited breath...

All in all, looks amazing bud! I wait with extremely baited breath...

I had a few people test it and I will be adding new caves and such. This is because it will most likely be bombing run, as the map is quite large and theres alot of room for a large BR map.

I will be adding a path through the mountain near the ship to the other side and I am also in the process of adding a second way down to an expanded mine area at the bottom where the old mine is.

I might also be changing the way the larger elevators work, so make the gameplay faster (not waiting for long elevators etc.)

Because I am adding all this new stuff its going to take quite a bit longer to finish, so it may be a few more weeks. But I will definatly be releasing a beta once I have all the paths in place and such, to see how people like the gameplay.

This will also give me the opportunity to work on it over vacation, since I don't have much time (with school) to work on it much.

btw, I still play through the original...It may look a bit aged, but you still get that same rush and sense of atmosphere when the music strikes and you see the landscapes ;)

Haven't been working on the map this past two weeks, has been sort of busy for me. It's nearing completion though. I have two new interior areas added and being worked on, and am changing the interior lighting scheme to orange, fits more with the mine theme. The map is coming out quite different from the original, yet it will be very simillar visually-wise and the main areas are all still there.

I have two weeks off starting today, so i will have plenty of time to work on it :)

I am also thinking about releasing a beta to see what people think, but I don't know about that yet, I'll have to see how much I get done.

I was originally going to wait to post some pics here, but i remembered that the original pics I posted were very old, so here are some new ones, the parts you see have been worked on much more than when those original pics were taken.

Here's some editor pics as well, so you can see the amount of stuff/areas thats in this map, that the screens dont really show that well.

I have been working on two new interior areas for this, the 2nd one you can see in the 2nd screenshot, the other one needs more work (static meshes arent lighting right)

i did alot of work the past two days... changing the interior lights to brown/orange instead of blue. I'm also in the process off adding doors! :D

Would the mod's be open to the idea of creating such an additional forum here? I really think the community would benefit from it.

My take on beta releases are that they're good for the mapper, and bad for the community. The only reason being that places like ut2003hq exist only to leach files from everywhere and distribute poor versions of 3rd party game content to everyone. Even worse is the fact that when places like ut2003hq distribute these files that the original mapper usually gets little or no feedback on the level thus making the beta unproductive for the creator and hinders the impact of the final release. If sites like that had a policy on only having final release content available I'd be fine with it. That website in particular causes a lot of trouble for mappers only wanting to distribute beta levels in small portions to the community (albeit publically) since the nature of the site allows so much leeching it is generally bad for the community.

It's almost as bad as a warez site in how damaging it can be to the community. It has the right idea of distributing to a wide audience, but the leeching of beta files from everywhere causes havoc, especially online with so many content version mismatches.

Anyways the DE pack was sort of a dissapointment content wise, so there isnt really going to be anything added from that.

I have no idea when the Epic pack is coming, so im not going to wait for that.

Im aiming for a beta this week, really all that needs to be done is some polishing and a few custom models be put in, but ive been busy lately with finals and such so I haven't had much time to work on this, sorry about that for the people who are waiting :) I'll promise Ill try and get this out sometime soon.

It looks like you improved the texturing a lot, although I could be wrong as the shots are from different angles than before. I saw a pattern effect on the ground textures in your first set of shots, but the shot was a birds eye view.

First of all its BR, I stated this earlier in the thread, sorry for people just reading the recent stuff :) Wish I could edit titles here. It's a full blown BR map, with two different "routes" than the original level, one through the mountain near the nali house up top and one down below where the old mine was to the upper part. This is necessary for the flow of the map.

FPS wise the level is fine on my Gf4/xp1600. The only thing that i've noticed is that it sucks up all 512mb of my ram, and it gives me swap file usage ingame, when other UT maps do not.

I think this is simply due to the amount of geometry and terrain in the map, much much more than any stock ut2k3 map, I doubt its fixable but i'll see what I can do.

If you're wondering why there hasnt been a beta, i'm not going to release it for testing once its finished, after testing there will be fixes for issues people find and some polishing as I see fit.

Is there any way to export that to Unreal2? That would be so sweet to make it a single-player map (and after the sorry POS Unreal2 turned out to be, heaven knows we need some good single player maps for it)! Don't know if this would be possible, just thought it would be cool. Also, did you get the original music for it?? I asked that earlier but you didn't answer..... :weird:

I actually just bought Unreal 2 :) Waiting for it to come. I don't know what is different in the two builds, it could be possible. Having SP would be nice i agree.

And yes the music is there,...not in it yet though, i have the Mp3 somewhere just need to port it to .ogg.

Hi Baron, nice to see new screenshots!!! The ship is great, so the cave and the indoors... very nice map!!! Maybe the trees are a little boring (they are all the same in some shots..) but is a personal taste.

Now that the BP is out are you still intentioned to release it as a BR map? IMO this is a natural map for Invasion (I think it was your choice some time ago...) and so for a (GREAT) DM.

I hope my system can handle this wonder! I can't wait!

dude that map is asome! is the map actully out yet? and i noticed its a BR map, can i convert it to DM since that looks like a perfect map for the invasion mod the can with teh epic pack. since it is the original unreal map. PM me when its out or email me at:

95% finished, what I'm doing now is some tweaking of the design in certain areas that I don't like (mainly inside). All of the structure is done though.

Next thing after this is finishing pathnodes, they're in there but they suck and dont work right. And doing some final weapon placement tweaking. Also invasion seems to be wierded up as the monsters only spawn in one corridor of the map...so I have to figure that out. Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

As with FPS, its on the lower end. My system has no trouble running it though, an athlon xp 1600, geforce 4 ti 4400, 512mb ram. It does suck up ram though, if you try running it on a system with 256mb of ram it's going to be using the swap file very very often, so i wouldn't recommend running it with 256 unless you turn the texture detail down.

sounds good Baron, has been a long wait, probably longer than it took for me to make the original version of BR-Legacy (which is getting an complete overhaul BTW) The latest screens really do look good tho, cant wait to play the CTF version :up:

Just a thought about the shots...your architecture and detail is looking great, but the sunlight seems to bright....I hope the lighting isn't completed yet....Everything else looks friggin' great tho.

The lighting is fine, custom maps generally are way too dark imo.

The lighting in the caves looks awesome, but the area around the crashed ship looks to be almost at fullbright. IIRC Nyleve was set in a dusk type time, when the sun was on its way down.

I'd say taking about 20 - 30 brightness off the sunlight would be all it needs....other than that, the map looks pimp.
