Hello again, last time I posted shots of my map it was in the editing forum before this area even opened. I haven't had much time to work on the map for the past week or so due to my RL job (nasty) taking up all my free time. But anyways, no more babble. I'm really pleased with the way the map is turning out, Ive been spending a lot of time collaberating with an artist friend of mine on this one, since artists tend to know what looks ugly and what doesn't :) Im taking each area slowly, making sure that they have as much atmosphere as possible. Even the new song that will be included with the release adds atmosphere. Blah blah blah get to the shots already, yeah yeah here they are, Let me know what you all think :)

I see specs on your shots, is that ash from the volcano? If so that's an amazing touch. Definately will add atmosphere.

Also, that volcano looks mighty mean in the background. It looks like it's off in the distance through the skybox. Very nice, indeed.

Definately want to see more shots when the map progresses.

yeah looks cool until now, I am looking forward and hope you will have soon a playable beta for the map, and be sure to post more screenshots of the map.

It's really difficult to rate a map with screenshots. The skybox remembers me a map, ScorchedEarth I think its called, but nevermind :), keep up the good work!

Finally a map to look forward to....(there are a few others).
This looks Really good, especially that little area with the weird tree and HUGE flytrap thing.

I wish I had a release date...But with the new schedule I worked out, it will give me time to work on the map everyday, which is better than once a week :D I don't wanna get anyones hopes up but id say maybe 2-3 weeks.

not many critical things to say here.... it's looks pretty good from what i can see, but mabe a few blue sources might give the map some contrast lighting wise? Can't think of much else to say, can't see that much from the current screenshots.

A gimmicky idea coming though.... how about some molten rain of some sort? Could be cool.

New shots are to come very soon, and some more details about the gameplay and flow of the map. I have the weekend off thank god, with the exception of a trip Im taking tomorrow. As for the rain idea you had, That would be damn cool but I already have ash falling from the volcano, which I think looks pretty damn cool too :) More to come, Thanks to everyone for keeping interest!

Hey guys, sorry this is taking so long but RL work is killing me and all my spare time! Ive really been messing with lava the past few days, trying to get it to look more realistic. It looks so ugly just as a texture sitting there moving, ya know? But I think I finally found a way to make it look on par with everything else in the map. I have tomorrow night (thursday) off so I can actually have a chance to work on it and Ill post a few more shots for you guys.

Now, as for Fallen Moon, progress is indeed coming along, but SLOWLY. I think someone needs to pay me for mapping so I can do it all day instead of working normally!

But anyways, LONG overdue shots, some of them retaken. As a special treat, they are 1600x1200, which means they are super sexy :)

Great map. Try to make the map so that walljumping becomes useful. IMO that's what makes Antalus such a great map :)

Could you describe the layout of the map? It is not possible to do that from the screenshots that you have posted.

Also one more thing. It looks like you are going for the dark moody atmosphere in this map. Please make sure that the map has enough lighting and is not too dark. That would make it easier to see the players. This is one of the biggest problems in DM-Reigncaster. That map is nice and moody but is too dark. I can hardly see anybody in it.

Yeah, that would be nice, an idea of how all that fits together.

But, I worry, will my machine be able to play it? A lot of the maps I've downloaded are huge and however much I might like them they kill my kit too much. (PIII 1GHz, 512MB, Ti4200)

LvlMaster, what kinda machine you developing this map on ... and does it run well?

I'm not saying you should change anything ... my hard luck if I got a puter that won't run it :rolleyes: ... the artistic vision must be followed .. just wondering.

Man, I screwed up my other account on here. Haha so I had to make a new one. Oh well...Lemme try and answer some of these questions...

As for the layout, Ill get you guys a sketch online showing the basic overhead-flow of the map, will that be good enough? :)

And as for what system Im developing on..Im on a 1.6 ghz, 512 ram and a GF3...But Im making sure to keep the poly count within each area of the map between 40-60 thousand. It gets good framerates in each area, even when I run it at 1600x1200 with maximum options. So Im pretty sure it will run for all the lower systems, but thats what the beta testing is going to be for :)

Okay I spent a good amount of time today working on detailing certain areas and working out the base design. Im really having a problem designing a decent enough base area. The middle of the map is basically the bone bridges you see in the screenshots, with a base on either side.

After you cross the bridge there are a number of different valleys, one valley leading players on the ground level and the other valley leading players to an upper level, looking down on the lower level. Most of the valley walls have rock formations where you scale pretty quickly if you double-jump. There are a few rock formations that connect the lower level to the upper level as you progress towards the base.

But like I said earlier, the base design is driving me insane. It doesn't need to be large, just something that these valleys can connect into. Nothing just seems to fit the atmosphere at the moment but Im sure something will come up.

Sorry to be taking so long, but Im trying to make a darn good first release :)

Im really having a problem designing a decent enough base area

Are you thinking of man/alien built structures for the bases, or adapted landscape? Some sort of base built out of old lava tubes/tunnels, and a cave system might be cool if you want something non-artificial. I guess I'm thinking about that central chamber in Magma, with perhaps the flags on a central column like the armour is .. though maybe a bit bigger, and some way of the defenders overlooking it ... it's always fun blowing flag capturers off into lava just as they've grabbed the flag.

I'm sure something will come to you sooner or later that'll fit in. Just keep trying things.

Hey guys, Hope your all having a good thanksgiving...Ill be eating and mapping all day, if only every day could be spent like this :)

Well I wanted to swing by and get some opinions. Im working on one of the valleys that has a higher and lower level to it. Im just curious on peoples opinions about gameplay. Right now Im working out the rock formations and you can ascend along the valley walls pretty quickly if you double-jump. Heres a shot of the area Im working on now :

Now Im just wondering what you all think...Would you rather have some sort of man-made ramps/walkways on the valley walls(so you can ascend just by running up them) or would you rather the valleys look more natural and you ascend by moving quickly up the rocks?

Hmm, maybe have it both ways? Make the manmade walkways slower than doublejumping up the formations .... ideally (imo) doublejumping should be noticeably faster but leave you more exposed to getting fragged from below .... some tight corners on the walkway to make getting ambushed easier and also to make it harder to check if you're being followed.

Just a thought. Looks to be a great map!

Might kinda depend on what you've decided to do with the bases ... if they are some sort of artifical structure then maybe you could introduce some sort of ramps or stairs .... But only if you think it would make sense that someone would need to get that way and go to the bother of building something .. like if there's something up there worth getting

On the whole I can't see how they would fit in with your screen, the scale etc., looks like some nice rock work there. One would think that putting stairs/ramps would clutter it up and not look so nice.

Update :

Kind of a little setback....The recent base addition made the map a little too large. I have to move off the original design of the map and think up something new for the other team base.

But not all is bad news, because now that Im redesigning the other base, it means I get to make it a bit smaller, thus making the map get done quicker :)

I really like the looks of it so far, but the whole thing seems so "red". i hope there is enough lava to justify the extreme red color of the lighting, as the sky does not look to be the source for that color.

Thanks plumb...I played around with some of the lighting and it looks a lot more realistic now.

I was so used to the red atmosphere that I never bothered to mess with it again. Now the map is mainly covered in Earth tones and its much brighter. It blends much better with the surroundings.

More contrast might help...dramatic reds shooting up from cracks of lava in the ground underlighting some trees and rocks perhaps?

I'm always a sucker for more man made structures. Purely exterior maps are getting kind of old IMO.

This is true - as are purely industrial - a good mix is better - my new map is indoor/outdoor so you get the best of both worlds - and it is not overlarge either.

Even though my last two maps were exterior only, they did have a little bit going on via man made items/structures - I think your map would look great with some more custom meshes or something.. looks very good now though already!

i'd love to see some blues put in... and some more bone archetecture... at the moment it looks too jumbled up and put together, and the lighting is very bland and flat... you could make blue fireflies, or an ice volcano eruption, or something to break the brown/red/tree combination you have so far.

Bad news for people who may be looking forward to FallenMoon but from my current outlook on things, FallenMoon may remained unfinished and unreleased.

I am sorry to anyone who was looking forward to this map. Maybe my outlook may change, but as of now, I have stopped working on it.

Its just every direction I take with the map ends up being a wrong one. Its getting extremely frustrating. Maybe its just a dry spell in my creativity, but nothing seems to be working well within the map.

Maybe my luck will change and something good may come of it after all.

Sorry to hear that.

Worst comes to worse release it as an alpha "work in progress" build and let the feedback begin. After that you can choose between finishing it yourself or accepting some form of collaboration ...... some of the best UT maps were done that way.

Either way, release or no release, I predict a bright future for you. Hehehe, take a break and have some fun! :)

Okay, Quick post....FallenMoon could be release before Xmas...Yes one day, I know ;) The BR version could be release before Xmas, with the CTF version a week or so later...

I would suggest not rushing it out just for Christmas.

I would love to help but I put too much time into thorough beta tests and this close to Christmas I am too busy with family crap to do any good. I would hate to see you go by a bunch of quick run through tests to find fixes, as this map should be really good and I wouldn't want to see any big bugs in it upon release; then if anything serious came up you would probably be inclined to fix it for a re-release, and I don't think you want more than one version of the map out at the same time, all becasue of Christmas.

Anyway, if you want to hold the release until a day or two after Christmas I would be more than happy to test it for you (thoroughly). Unless you think it is almost bug free and only a few quick tests will suffice...

Go for medium size, worst comes to worst re release it a little smaller. But id say in the middle with please the most even though i would like too see a large map, but the larger the map the worse the FPS will be. Go medium for sure.

If you like I would love to have a look at the map for you. How large would you say it is? Try compare it to like Orbital2. Personally I think CTF needs a few more maps that are a little bit larger, to damn many maps that feel cramped. Anyway if you want me to take a look at it, send me a pm.

Definately larger ;) Maps like Face 3, Magma, Prometheus, Marsbase, etc are the perfect size for 12 player servers.

I'd go medium to large ... don't forget that in a year or so's time a lot more people will have better systems (I know I will :) )... though it's a tricky balance to get ... and still make a map that plays well enough to have people playing it now. The game certainly seems to have more smaller maps than large, for CTF anyway ...
Personally, I've never minded asymmetrical maps, as long as both bases were roughly equally defendable ... so you don't have to make it like Magma, with the map mirrored about the centre (don't know whether it is, or not.) ... You've got so many people waiting for this map, I wouldn't worry too much, get it to beta, and see what the feedback is.

I don't think size matters all that much as long as capturing the flag is not frusterating. Loading a big map with lots of weapons all over would just get the flag carrier killed all the time...

So, the past week or so Grimmen and his clan mates have played through the current version of FallenMoon and are helping me a lot. Mostly with fixing the layout, sizing the map down and so forth. Glad to say that its nearing the final...or maybe I should just say public beta. Either way...Its coming :) Heres some shots of the CTF version...

The bridges in the middle of the map have been sized down now, so the trip across the lava doesnt take so damn long :)

This looks like a great map and its been so long........but......dont rush. I hate it when people are on track with a idea and doing well then people start to bug them to release it. And then it turns out to be not what it could have been.

But I am glad that LvlMaster wanted us to look at the map and give feedback, cause in the beginning it was so LARGE :D :D :D

But I can say that the map is pretty much done what goes for structure and so. LvlMaster is mostly working on tweaking away holes and ways to get to parts of the map you arent supposed to get to :p :)

Still it looks great. I dont especially like the rib bridges (becasue the meshes are too "Fred Flintstone" looking to me), and the whole thing is really red, but it still looks like a great map.
It will really come down to the great layout (assuming it has one).

I fear there may be a lot of spots to get snagged on wihile running becasue of all the little protruding detail you have (mappers tend to ignore proper blocking volumes to prevent snagging). But hopefully not.

I was hoping you would implement Cliffy's idea earlier in the thread about light beams coming up through cracks in the ground, to give the impression of earthquake volcano type conditions.

I think everyone is just really curious. ;)

Not that this map is of any interest anymore, Its pretty close to being complete. I know I know Ive said that before, but this time it really is.

Basically Im going to release a version right now, which is the map and its complete layout. I want to get your opinions on this since its been taking forever.

Now when I say just the layout, I mean exactly that. There are no volumes, so lava will not kill you except for a certain few places. There are no blocking volumes, so you can get to places you really shouldnt. Anti-Portals are not set up in effective places. So on and so forth. No bot pathing and no weapons. Its just the layout. Got it? :)

But let me know what you guys think of it, and if I should even spend my one day a week working on it anymore :)

Ive been going through it all morning and fixing up the really dark parts of the map and changing some of the details around, but the layout is still basically the same.

Im sure you can tell some parts need to be added to, detail wise, since they are pretty bare compared to the rest of the map.

Great map so far just 1 question is the skybox complete as i get the sky but not the backdrops i have a same problem with lavagiant2 were the sky box is all messed up, i was just wondering if A: the backdrops aint in yet or B: its a proplem my end. Thanks .

Hmmm that skybox problem sounds weird. The skybox in the map is basically complete, Its one of the few things thats actually done :)

With LG2 it's beacuase of low end GFX cards. I only have a gf2 mx. Maybe it's beacause of that. But i dont see the big Volcano, only the smoke.

I dont think Im going to add lava volumes for the lava near the bases. (the lava you can run through) We'll just pretend the warriors have magic lava boots. :)

If I may ask - why spend so much time on a map, only to short change it in the end by letting people walk through lava? I encourage you to take the time to do this, rather than rush it out ;)

Here some suggestions about the lava pools, I think you should get rid of the ones next to the flags, I guarentee you the AI will be dumb enough to stand in them untill they die, and it hinders gameplay, the rest of the lava pools should do damage as you stand in them, and the lava under the bridges should be insta-kill.
As for weapon/item placement, put 2 or so health stations near the flag base and a minigun/biorifle and linkgun/shockrifle, flak canon and rocket launcher should be in somewhat out of reach places, since they are pretty much the 2 most powerful weapons, and random item spawers would go great on the bridges, the rest is up to you man, im sure others will give some suggestions....

Nah keep the lava near the flag, and make it hurt people, just make it weaker then the rest of the lava. say 10 health points per sec, that way if you accidently jump into it you won't die.

As for health if you do keep the lava and make it hurt people, then you should also put health on either side of the lava in the flag rooms.

I also feel that this map Is a great sniper map, so you should at least put 4 Lightning guns in key locations around the map. Also 1 redeemer and 1 ion cannon in hard to reach places would be nice. Just make sure u have a few satellites so that the area it can be used in is greater.

I do have one structure request. there is at least one plant I know of that you can get stuck on in the main path because it leans down so far. could you make it so u can go through it rather then hit it?

Other that that the map structure is great, Just make sure to put in a lot of anti-portals, because my high end system was getting 18-13 FPS through most of the map.

Its about 11 am right now....Ive been messing with this damn thing all morning. Bot pathing is in place and Im doing weapons right now.

The level might be a little faster for some people since Ive been optimizing it like crazy. Im sure it'll still need some work in some areas, but Ill work on that later.

The bots seem to be behaving well around the lava and they are climbing the broken pillars with no problems at all :) They aren't as stupid as I thought.

As for blocking volumes, Im not even goign to worry about it right now. Im sure some people can find their way into areas where you're not supposed to go, but I really wont know that till you guys play it :)

Im looking to release a working version within the hour.
