Well first of all, he said he has the first karma object ever, not so, I have 8 of them in Marsbase3000 (first map I've ever made) that was released in NOV.
and I hope hes figured it a trick to make them work out because it doesnt work online.
Map looks really kool, we've needed more urban types, I'll be making one after my next two maps are released, in a few weeks.

What do you mean man? I have a amd 1.3 and a G3 ti 500 (med specs by todays standards) and my maps have been relativly smooth, I admit I get carried away with the detail sometimes.:)
Marsbase3000 is a bit more demanding if thats the one you mean, it was my first map so I was learning, people have told me it ran really smooth on there machines, mine has a few stutters but no slide show.
Its really a hard thing to make a detailed and perfectly smooth map. by detail I mean no barren walls e.t.c alot of the official maps are actually pretty bare. well laid out & smooth but pretty bare on the small details.

Actually I was speaking in relation to AngelHeart's map. It obviously has a lot of **** going on in it, and I doubt I will be able to get very much performance out of it.

Everything is so done to scale. u really notice how oversized the weapons picks ups are here.
legacy-Doctor7
01-13-2003, 09:21 AM
You also notice how tall you seem to be in first-person. But I won't restart the scale debate here, it's going to be an issue with any realism map.
Also, don't expect any cool Karma deaths. The one bit of attention to detail which is missing is that none of the custom meshes have collision.
Apart from that, amazing map, just the kind of thing I wanted to see in this engine

It didn't seem to run too bad for me. It's a great map just to walk around in. Could do with blocking volumes to stop you being able to jump out of the level in so many places. Some little puppet blokes walking around would have been nice though. :(

I can get a bearable framerate - I tried it with default bot count - but there's a huge stutter every time I enter a new zone. I have P41.6, 512Mb RAM and a TI4400 128Mb - I suspect the RAM, followed by the graphics card memory, will make the most difference on a map like this.
legacy-adv1
01-13-2003, 12:01 PM
Well, the map seems to be virtually unplayable on all but the lowest detail settings (or most powerful PCs), but it's still the most impressive map I've yet seen.
Absolutely huge and packed full of details and places to go which people will probably miss the first few times they play.
Exactly the sort of map UT2003 needs, to show that it can break away from all the usual desert/space/gothic maps. Incredible work, and any BladeRunner fan's dream map.

01-13-2003, 12:30 PM
I've been waiting to try this one. This map looks absolutely stunning.
legacy-0Xcel
01-13-2003, 02:17 PM
Now this is a real good looking map, great on the visuals, just great, of course i dunno if its good for gameplay.
I have a REALLY bad problem with this map, when playing by myself it stutters, and when i play with bots, it stutters even more, its really annoying and very unplayable. (Tried changing settings such as karma low because i know this map uses karma)
Plus there is a whole lot of crap outside of the map, try jumping out of the map, theres ALOT of empty floor, and ALOT of useless buildings which you cant see from the main bit anyway because of the fog.
EDIT:i get about 40-60 fps, and sometimes it boosts upto 100 inside places.
Plumb_Drumb
01-13-2003, 03:24 PM
IT"S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay so I finally tried the map.
After the full minute it took to precache all the textures, I was in.
FIrst thing I noticed was that I was getting more fps than DM-Antalus. THis is a very good thing. I dont think I ever dropped below 29 fps, usually staying at around 45-50. I play at 1024x768x32 with everything on high except texture detail which is on normal.
This map is not very playable for a UT2003 map as you are moving too fast and the place seems a little cramped, but it would be great for a realism mod such as Infiltration if it ever comes over to UT2003.
I didn't like how some of the meshes didn't have collision, becasue while its fun to cick around the shopping carts with your rocket launcher, it also sucks when they dissapear behind a wall
:(
(also some models wre just plain goofy looking, like the femaile characters strewn about as health pickups)
There is so much going on in this map thanks in part to the mass amount of textures. I think if you have a graphics board with 128 mb of RAM on it, and enough system memory than this map is no problem to run, as the poly counts arent really that high.
I have a ti4600 and 512 mbs ram and i didn't get one hitch the whole time.
I thought some of hte textures were estremely ugly. I don't always like photo scanned textures but most of these looked good. Up close you could see ugly black outlines on a lot of the transparent texture areas.
But this map is really all about atmosphere, which it has in spades. Sounds are everywhere, and the place just feels like a place.
Most of the detail in this map is in the textures. It may have looked better if some things were accomplished by using more polycounts, but then it would render hte level unplayable on less than a 9700pro or GeForceFX card.
This map is an experience. (i really liked it when i found my way to the rooftop behind the "TDK" neon sign, where the Lightning gun is, i was like "wow" llooking across the street at the "titty twister" :haha: )

I just played the map. I'm in complete shock.
I'm able to get around 30 fps with everything on max and a res of 1600x1200 32 bit. Some areas it dips below that....but my god...this map is just flat-out awesome. You don't see this level of detail from the big guys. I wanted to hop in the police car and fly around so bad..but unfortunately, you can't. That's how emersive the map is. Things look very real here. Excellent texture work. There's a ton of cool areas to explore too. I can't imagine how long this took to make.
It has some issues, but overall it's worth checking out to see the amazing work put into this map.

legacy--=WhiteWulf=-
01-13-2003, 11:55 PM
Well ok I dont want anyone to hate me but I found a few parts of the map to be um, blah. First of all he coulda made the chandelier in the house 3d instead of that flat 2d thing. Just my opinion.
The music, he coulda made something more urbanish to suit the environment instead of using the game's menu music.
I saw a numerous amount of textures being used from his old UT maps however, I felt that was somewhat dissapointing. But I think his DM-Metropolis looks better, this one just didnt "do it" for me. Just my two cents.

He's obviously still learning what's possible with UEd 3 - a lot of it is built as if it was a UT map - most of those textures are low-res compared with the average UT2003 ones, but I'd hate to think what the performance would do if they were all 512x512 and 1024x1024. And none of his custom statics have collision, and some of them are much higher-poly than they needed to be.
However, it's a better looking map than most of us who know the editor well will ever produce.
legacy--=WhiteWulf=-
01-14-2003, 12:19 AM
Ok but if he's really "that good" with UED2, dont ya think he woulda taken more time to do something a bit more advanced? Sure he's a smart guy and all and an aswesome mapper, but if I was him I woulda taken more time to explore the editor's advanced features, to produce a more high quality map. I'm sure he's more than got the skills.
legacy-DaNcO
01-14-2003, 12:33 AM
This is what I call an art map. Big, detail, well constructed but lacks weapons/ammo/items and game flow. Kind of reminds of playing duke3d city maps. It was well worth the look though if you like to admire eye candy.
legacy-ImJacksAmygdala
01-14-2003, 05:28 AM
Holy **** what a monstrosity! I'm not even attempting that map untill I build my new computer...
Warning! Do not attempt this map if you have a
1.3 P4
128mb pc800
1gig swap file
GF4 4600ti (I know, I bought it awhile ago for my next comp, but will prolly upgrade it anyway)
Tweaked everything to the max (but still looks good, not lego at all 1024x768x16 everything on low but world detail normal, lots of other tweaks and tweaked LOD)(graphics drivers are tweaked to the max too, even my RAM usage is tweaked)(even my swap file is tweaked)
I got 0-60 fps but I had to turn around very slowly or my comp would start swapping and hitching horribly due to my lack of RAM. I also use precaching so it took about 10 minutes to load the map.
It's very cool and I hope maps look like this when the hardware catches up. I just hope as much considerations is given to the gameplay of the map. This one is just for looks folks. I can't imagine an actual game played on this map. But it sure looks great when you not hitching!

I was actually quite surprised, i was expecting it to be for looks only, but the layout is reminiscent of some of the more playable urban maps for UT. So you might not be using the extra UT2003 moves very much, but it would work, especially as a TDM.
I don't know how much more mapping Angelheart is intending to do for UT2003, but I'd like to see a version of this with the boundaries sorted out, more optimisation, proper collision on the meshes and re-done item placement. I think it could end up as a playable map without sacrificing the looks.
legacy-ImJacksAmygdala
01-14-2003, 07:04 AM
Well maybe that was a little harsh. For those that may be able to smoothly run this map it, the layout may be very fun. I was just trying my hardest to look around. I shouldn't have put it like that.
But with the weapon and item placement the way it is, its looks to me like more of an experiment than a functional layout. Dunno, just my 2cents.

LOL wuts up with everyone' s performance, it runs fine here.
I've got a geforce3 ti200 and PIII 1,8 and 512 blabla. I didn't do any tweaking and my whole comp is a mess and still it's running fine.
Just put everything on low and rez on 800x600.
Btw I kinda agree with you on the gameplay, this map isn't the best for the over the top UT2k3 weapons, but IMO would just be fine with the upcoming strike force kinda mods.

Runs fine on "normal" or lower settings. Setting texture and world detail to high looked great... I had time to notice how great it looked since I was getting 3 FPS... :p P4 2.3 533, 512mb, GF3 (yeah--that's the problem... gimme that new FX!).
The Bladerunner feel was very cool... great sound work. Felt a lot like a Deus Ex level. Nice

an amazing piece of work - as a enviroment "creation", obv not the best for an online multiplayer map.. but he has poured his heart and soul into this.
The only thing is he didn`t optomise it much at all, for instance I just halved the file size in 10 minutes in the editor just by compressing all the RGBA and P8 Textures... this would also help the performance a LOT with less actual memory taken up.
Of course the downside is some texture will look a little uglier and some cant be done so easy (with alpha channels dxt1 is out).
I was in the process of doing a `neon-precint` CTF level, I`d planned it all out but had only just started it.. I just scrapped it after I saw this map come out as anything else would just be called a copy or be missing this maps detail.

its very impressive though.
seems to me it'll suit a mission of some sp-mod better...
now that would RAWK!!
Ya if it was a part of a tactical shooter type mod, it would be great

This map looks amazing, very detailed....can't play it though. Takes 3 minutes to load and then it's stutter city all the way. Tried to move down detail and no bots, not much better. I think this map is for visuals only. It has alot of that. I won't expect to see this map up on a server though. ;)
Someone said Ownage? I don't think it will get that purely because of playability, or lack there of it.

Amazing looking map. AngelHeart's UT maps were detailed as well. I'm looking forward to all of his UT2k3 ones even they aren't your typical playable maps.
Has anyone tried using the "Use" key (default key is U) on some of the devices around the map - for example the Esper in the police station, and one of the phone booths (not the one near the police station). Also in one of back alleys the "Use" key opens up a door which leads to a "sniping" apartment.
Can't wait to see what AH produces in a couple of years time when we've all (hopefully) upgraded to the next generation technology.
/edit - This map makes me want to go and watch the Blade Runner movie now :)

I've heard people saying you can kick aorund the shopping karts and drinks cans but I can't. Nothing in the level moves when shot, should it? I have very high settings with physics on high. Now I am wondering if I am missing Karma physics in the official levels!!
What am I doing worng?

Better have a dam high end system, map is 50 megs
I'm not sure if its been fixed or what, but a buddy checked it out and discovered that there was no anti-portal use on the original.
For the n00bs out there, if there is no anti-portals, the entire map is being drawn all the time.
AKA If you're in a room with just one door and no windows, even though you just see those 4 walls and the door, the rest of the map is being created by your graphics card, major resource hog.

Only true if the room isn't a zone. As long as the map is properly zoned, it shouldn't need antiportals. This map is zoned although the outside might still benefit from an antiportal or two as that's where most of the detail is.

ok, I don't map, so all I know is what a friend that does map tells me. He's a good mapper, just doens't tell me everything since I don't plan on mapping (too much of a headache imo)

Yes you can shoot all those things. I have moved the following in this level by shooting at it: Shopping Karts, drinks cans, wine bottles, bowls of chinese food, hanging chinese lanterns, beer crates and black rubbish bags. In the official level BR-Slaughterhouse you can move the meat cleavers and some of the lights by shooting at them.
What am I doing worng? Not sure why it doesn't work on your PC, but try reducing the MinDesiredFrameRate to 0 in your UT2003.ini file. Warning: This may affect your normal framerate so you may want to put it back to what it was originally for normal play.

He might need to set his physics detail to a higher setting. I dunno. Mine's always on high.

Yeah, never searched for it though I couldn't think off anything UT2k3 would need a usekey for.
Btw Buckyfg hehe actually I play all the maps at that detail :p, it just needs some getting used too after you played with a higher rez but after a while everything looks as beautifull as always.
I'm still having probs with some off the maps though :(

The Karma physics don't work for me either on this map, and I have my physics setting on high. No karma physics in BR-Slaughterhouse either. =\

I have the same Karma physics problem, I have my settings correct too...
Well to be truthfull i`v never seen the karma.Only when i die lol
But i did come accross one in BR-Slaughterhouse.
Goto the steps where you score but dont go into the room,Look down the corrodor you should see a hanging lights shoot it and watch it move.
But thats the only one i`v found upto now.
I`v been told the meat moves as well as the hooks but they dont for me?
oh well.
p.s just noticed someone allready posted that oh well.
