To everyone,
I am going wild with excitement. I seem to have figured out UT2003 Voice Packs!
Yes, I actually played an online game with another person on a separate dedicated server, and yes the new package did download to the other person (who didn't have it yet), and yes we both heard my custom voice taunts in the game! However, I don't have more data points than this right now, so there may be some weird things that I haven't thought of, identified or run into yet. But hopefully not. Feedback is of course welcome. :)
See my tutorial here for complete instructions and screen caps.
http://members.rogers.com/fraggin_phun/UT2003_VoicePacks.html
You can also try it out using my HomerJay3 UT2003 Voice Pack, available from here.

Unfortunately many people might not be able to take advantage of creating their own right away, since there seem to be problems with Unreal Editor 3.0 crashing on startup on some machines (grrr).
Since the new Voice Packs aren't actually all that different, it seems as though it should be possible to develop a utility to convert UT voice packs to UT2003 - now that would be interesting!
Hoping to help improve the UT2003 experience for all! :)

Nice Fraggin_Phun  !
Hey do you mind if I post a link to this thread on BUF?
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/index.php?s=
(or you could register there and do it yourself :D...)
I'm sure lost of people will appreciate the work you've put into this

Thanks for the comments and suggestion, SpacePirate. Posted at BUF in the Unreal Engine / UT2003 forum.
By the way, I should mention that all the custom sounds in the HomerJay3 Voice Pack are Taunts, nothing else is done yet.
I would definitely appreciate feedback from other people if this UT2003 Voice Pack process works for them or not. Please send me any problems or limitations that you find, or post in this thread. Feedback on the tutorial is welcome too. I'm especially interested in what happens with several Voice Packs based on the same original UT2003 character being used on the server at the same time. As far as I can tell, based on how these Voice Packs are created, and what little I know of the engine, there shouldn't be any problems.

Very good!
One thing though, it's volume is too low

Interesting... I don't seem to have that problem on my system. Can anyone else confirm this? TracerTong, do you have any unique sound settings, say music set higher than default? What audio mode are you using? I'd definitely like to make sure everyone can enjoy it :)

The pack only has taunts ... other voicemessages are not available. :(
IT does prove it's possible to add voicepacks, so I'm not complaining ... yet ;)

Heheheh OK that sounds like a HomerJay Voice Pack feature request! I'll have to start working on that. I also did notice after paying more attention that the HomerJ taunts do sound a bit softer than for other players. Maybe I'll bump up the volume a bit in the next release.
Thanks everyone... Fraggin_Phun

You could try subclassing the Homer-voicepack from the mercenary-voicepack. That should (in theory at least) give you access to all the standard voicemessages if you don't fill them with a custom variant.
It still won't be perfect, but at least it will be useful.

Let me just say that you are the f___ing man for posting such a great find. Voicepacks are what make the game for me and all my buds, and now I have created my own for all of us to use. CARTMAN, FULLMETAL JACKET, AND MORE! The instructions you gave were accurate and simple to follow. Thanks for your time.
Question: If you have more than 8 taunts, how do you navigate to the rest of them? The menu only allows 8.
YOU ROCK!

Glad to help! :D
In the voice menu you should see that '0' (at the bottom) allows you to cycle to the next set of sounds.

In the second voice pack I just made, at first I thought the "Other" category only provided 8 voice menu choices in the HUD, even though I had many more in the package. The other voices were there and worked - I could manually call them from the console, and map them to keys. Then I noticed the OtherMesgGroup in the Default Properties, which I believe determines which sound slots are available for which type of games. Something to add in the next version of the tutorial.
Or... in your specific case, perhaps you only got 8 choices for taunts because you forgot to change the numTaunts number in the default properties...?

Very important when adding voice packs to servers:
The server administrator must rebuild the server's MD5 database by running the following command in a DOS / Command window in the \UT2003\System folder (many thanks to ZYX2323 for sending me this information!)
- For original retail version: UCC MASTERMD5 *.U
- For patch 2136 version: UCC MASTERMD5 -c *.U
If you don't run the ucc mastermd5 command, servers with cheat/hack protection turned on will stop you from joining the server. All sorts of bad things will happen (trust me), including corrupt connection messages (often seen only after the first game). This is a standard restriction that affects all voice packs, unless the server has added the .u file AND rebuilt their master MD5 table (or added the package to the existing MD5 database).
I have been updating the Tutorial and the HomerJay3 voice pack, it is now at version 3.4.
Versions 3.1/3.2/3.3 have major enhancements, including:
- Normalized wav files and increased volume slightly (not sure any of that helped much though)
- Added LOTS of sounds back into the package, filled in rest of categories (orders, friendly fire, etc).
- Added HomerJay Player Portrait and description text for player selection in GUI and HUD messages (this is so funny). Two portraits are available.
- Added list of sounds and strings (Microsoft Word) to zip file
- Added very important instructions for installing on a server so that it runs correctly.
You can get HomerJay3 version 3.4 here:

Here's a very important update for anyone making UT2003 voice packs:
There is an excellent push content tutorial recently released by Joseph M. Wilcox at Epic (see http://unreal.epicgames.com/UT2003/tutorials/push/ ). This new functionality introduced with patch 2186 makes deploying custom content (including voice packs) in multiplayer server games easier than ever! No need to manually send any files to clients without the voice pack anymore; ALL the required content downloads automatically from the server now. :)
Based on that tutorial, I have
- Updated the original Fraggin_Phun UT2003 Voice Pack tutorial with instructions on how to enable push content for voice packs (see http://members.rogers.com/fraggin_phun/UT2003_VoicePacks.html)
- Updated the original HomerJay3 UT2003 voice pack with the push content functionality enabled. It also includes the script source for people interested in knowing how to do this. It is very easy by the way. The new voice pack version is linked near the end of the tutorial.
Cheers! Fraggin_Phun

I saw the Homer model on a pub a few days ago...my first exposure to online custom characters in UT2003. Can't wait to hear the voicepack online as well...I use the 2 together whenever I play offline.
Another good mix is the Skaarj voicepack with the Massacre model (at least until that Skaarj model is completed).
