View Full Version : Server browser says "Connecting to Master Server" forever

legacy-Jack Porter

If this happens and you can't get a server list and nothing appears on the News page, check your System\UT2003.log file. If it contains a line which says the following in your log:

Log: Resolved ut2003master1.epicgames.com -> 207.135.145.2
Log: Connect() returned SOCKET_ERROR: 10061

If that line occurs, the most likely cause is firewall software such as ZoneAlarm. You may need to disable this software or configure it to allow UT2003 to make connections to TCP port 27902.

Note that a similar line in the log file with "SOCKET_ERROR: 10035" harmless and can be ignored.

I have set this Value:
[UWeb.WebServer]
Applications[0]=xWebAdmin.UTServerAdmin
ApplicationPaths[0]=/ServerAdmin
Applications[1]=xWebAdmin.UTImageServer
ApplicationPaths[1]=/images
DefaultApplication=0
bEnabled=True
to true.
That solved the Problem for me.

I did have this line in my log file:

Log: Resolved ut2003master1.epicgames.com -> 207.135.145.2
Log: Connect() returned SOCKET_ERROR: 10061

But there is no firewall... so that can't be it.

The other solution of setting that value to "True" didn't do anything either.

But maybe my problem is not fully the same:

It does not only keep querying the master server, but there isn't even a server browser....
All there is is: NEWS | FILTER | LAN | FAVORITES
No DM, CTF or anything, besides there is no news either.

(or is this all caused by querying the master server?)

Plz see if you might no another solution?

Thx,
Grim

I thought that epic games was a bit more aggressive to give more solutions to a problem.

I have the same problem, other games go online ok, but UT2003 just keeps retrying connection. Tech support phone line said they won't support this part of the game even though it's a multiplayer product, but they did suggest uninstalling ZoneAlarm even if its not running!

Problem solved, it was the firewall even though it wasn't running.

legacy-Spyderx

Remember if you are using WinXp ; you have a firewall setup by default and this can cause UT to lock up and not allow connections to pass.

I suggest disable this and use Tiny personal firewall or something similar. ( more configuration options if you are into that)

Since this is a forum read by Epic peeps ; I just want to say THANKYOU !!!!! for providing some a great game , UT and UT2K3 have given me hours and months and years of fun .

They are probably few of the games that I have actually gone out and bought because I think you guys deserve the $$ for the work you do.

Cheers ! :D

I worked Tech Support for Earthlink for 2 years, and this does fix Zone Alarm firewall issues

Uninstall ZoneAlarm = :up:

Then reinstall if you want. But keep ^that^ in mind if you do.

I worked Tech Support for Earthlink for 2 years, and this does fix Zone Alarm firewall issues

But i do not run zone alarm, and have the same prob so that can't be the reason, i play unpatched right now, but it's still very frustrating to play like this, knowing there's a lot of bugs in the unpatched version. I want a solution, asap or i'll give this game up and start playing ut again, that works fine!

Had the same problem twice tonight, fixed it both times by simply by restarting UT2k3

1/ master server is or was connecting, log file showed it had connected.

2/ Firewall up, but the Browser has worked since I got my hands on the demo.

Only thing I can add is XP Pro, is it an issue with XP networking?

As I installed XP simply to test UT2k3, to see if it was faster in it than 2K Pro and it is. So I have kept it installed.

But I have networked my 2 PC's sharing my DSL via ICS. Occasionally I cant get any data through my LAN at all and have to use the right click Repair option for the LAN connection in the SYS tray.

Now UT2k3 worked fine under 98se and 2K Pro on version 2136 on the same LAN setup, but not until I installed XP instead of 2K did I get problems.

That help any?

just a little tip, if your hooked up through a router, most newer routers have built in firewalls, you need to go into the config and open the port that ut uses.

I have the exact same problem as spacelordmf....It keeps saying "Connection failed...retrying". There is no SOCKET error or anything in the UT2003.log. I have reinstalled the game twice, and I even reinstalled the SP1 patch for Windows XP. I'm on a cable modem, and UT2003 used to work fine. I checked the CD Key in the registry, and it is correct. Any suggestions? Would a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows XP fix this (I've kinda been meaning to do this for some time)?

-Matt Smith

Edit: I reformatted & reinstalled Windows XP today, and all seems well. I can connect to the master server and join games. I'm not quite sure what the problem was, but the computer had been acting odd lately anyway, with certain programs not wanting to run and such. At least I can play now...

I had the same problem, but by editing my \system\ut2003.ini with the following, I got my problem solved.
I am behind a NAT-router, but without any other firewall.
I am pretty sure, that it is a master server problem, and not a "user problem".

I too have just started getting the same problem. I have had the game since the first day it was released and has been working great. I installed the 2136 and the 2166 patches a little while ago and it still worked great for about a week. Now i can not hit the master server. I am behind a linksys router/firewall, but have had all the ports forwarded since day one. I also put my gaming machine in the DMZ to make sure that the traffic was not blocked on my end. In the log, it shows traffic going out the master server, yet the game still says "trying to connect". The only servers I can connect to are favorites. Any ideas before i try to reinstall UT2k3?

I just bought this game today and I can not get online. It just says unable "Connection failed", I have tried some of the solutions above, and I even rang Infrograms which were about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

I basically have two machines. The first on is my server and has adsl Alcatel Frog on it, it aint a powerful machine so no use playing games. The 2nd machine teh games machine using XP ICS. I have disabled Norton Internet Security on it.

i have pinged Epic

This is basically a bump....

running WinXP, until today, everything worked fine..

Now, my Teamspeak won't work, UT2003 won't work (same problem, it keeps seeing it's reconnecting), and Aol IM and ICQ stopped working, all saying they couldn't connect.

I reconfigured AOL and ICQ by clicking autoconfigure in their settings menu, and now they both work. It seems there is a way to work around it with those programs.

Is there any way to edit the game itself to use alternate ports? (I am a student at a University who does use a firewall.... obviously last night they changed some ports around....)

Any hints? I did no pay $50 for this game to play it for a couple of weeks...??

help..

BTW- I can't connect to IRC within the game, and gamespy won't even load a room. Any ideas if maybe somethings wrong with my XP configuration>

127.0.0.1 is your local machine's ip-address. That is not the address of the unreal servers.... I dont know what would cause that.

I had the same problem until I realized that I had zonealarm installed. I hadnt had it running for a couple of weeks due to some other problems but as soon as I uninstalled it mine connected fine. Also this only happened when I patched ut2k to version 2199. The older versions didnt have that problem. I guess its something that they changed.

I've had nothing but problems with this game. It basically would be $50 down the drain if I didn't have the no-cd crack. Epic, this is ridiculous. Out of box, the game wouldn't work. Your horrible copy protection prevented it from working.

I upgraded to 2199 yesterday and it doesn't work at all. I am so fed up. It's not like I'm overclocking or anything. I have a Dell System right out the box, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, 512 Megs ram, Intel CPU, Win 2k, ZoneAlarm NOT installed, etc. All other games work FINE on my system. Q3A, RTCW, Soldier of Fortune 2, NOLF2, Counterstrike, etc. EVERY GAME WORKS FINE EXCEPT THIS CRAPPY GAME. Even the UT2k3 demo worked fine.

WHY CAN'T EPIC PROVIDE MORE ADVICE ON HOW TO FIX THIS? THERE'S OBVIOUSLY PROBLEMS IN THE CODE. IT'S NOT A FIREWALL ISSUE. I DON'T EVEN HAVE A FIREWALL, NOR DO I RUN WIN XP!!

And frankly without the no-cd crack I wouldn't have been able to get this far. The standard 2199 upgrade wouldn't even run on my computer.

Epic you really let us down here. I speak for a lot of other people too when I say I will NEVER purchase an Epic game ever again. Why bother with the hassle.

My $50 has gone down the drain.

I had upgraded to the 2199 patch and was using a no cd patch.
So I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it without the no cd patch and it authenticates fine now.
Obviously they made some changes with 2199 patch with regards to using no cd patches.
So unless you like finding the f-ing disk everytime you want to play, I suggest you do not upgrade to the 2199.

OK, here is the deal... or mine anyway. :weird:

I installed the Unreal4All utility and also updated my UT2003 load with Unreal4All server patch. The server patch changes your hosts file and causes your legitimate UT2003 server browser not to find its list servers.

Check your hosts file. This is found:

Win2K: C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
WinXP: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open it with notepad or some other text editor. Scroll all the way to the end and look for two entries similiar to the following:

208.39.46.24 ut2003master1.epicgames.com # Unreal4All
208.39.46.23 ut2003master2.epicgames.com # Unreal4All

These entries are redirecting UT2003 to Unreal4All list servers. This is why the legitimate game gets lost looking for its list servers.

Delete both entries, save the file, and restart UT2003. The legitimate game resolves these servers elsewhere.

Hope it helps.

The EggMan ;)

For those who are having trouble with CD authentication, wouldn't it just be logical to upgrade to v2225 (since apparently it no longer checks the CD anymore).

Also, my problem with the master server is identical to bonuscup's. It identifies my handle and resolves the server, but then disconnects itself for some odd reason. In the message area of the menu, I see "Authentication failed." The weirdest thing, however, is that the server list itself is nowhere to be found. There are tabs for News, Favorites, LAN, Chat, and Filter, but no Internet Games. It's able to connect itself to the IRC server (before telling me to register), so I'm sure it's not my router (has a firewall and NAT).

This is practically out of the box; the only other additions I made were the v2225 patch and both bonus packs. I haven't used any no-CD patches.

for free zone alarm
when you first run ut2003, click back on desktop whilts its loading so the game will run in window mode (or press alt+enter when you get to main menu of game), Select plan on-line / lan menu item

You firewall should promt you to allow ut2003.exe to access the internet & then act as a server. Say yes to both of theses and enable rememeber this setting

You should now get the news & the other all game types i.e. invasion, mutant, dm, tdm, ctf etc.

IF YOU DONT ENABLE REMEMBER THIS SETTING IN FIREWALL YOU WILL NEED TO ALLOW THE PROGRAMME ACCESS TO INTERNET / ACT AS A SERVER EACH TIME YOU RUN THE GAME

Says Ironhide:

"ive got a similar problem
i can connect to the master server and get a list of servers
but the server details never show up and the ping is n/a
and this just started happening, ive been playing fine for months"

Do you have a linksys router and recently upgraded to firmware 1.45.6? This firmware is known to cause problems with several games and their in-game browsers. See here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,7534733~root=equip,16~mode=flat

I had to downgrade to 1.44.2 version to get my server browser to work. Alternatively you can upgrade to 1.45.7 and it will also work. Stay away from 1.45.6 at all costs.

Yay I load up the online and it says quering master server. For the longest time nothing happens. I exit and re enter come back, same thing. I repeat this a few times or just hit refresh list once or twice and then it finally it does finish querying the server BUT I look at the servers it found. I click on DM quers again for a bit then finds them all. Does this for TDM, Double Domination and CTF too. BUT THE NEW VERSIONS INVASION, BOMB RUN, LAST MAN, MUTANT, AND ALL THE OTHER GAME TYPES(FAVORITES OF MINE) DON'T EVER STOP QUERYING THE SERVER. I have not yet tried the previous posted fixes I will soon start trying them, but I doubt they will solve it because only a few game types dont seem to conect. Once DM loads up its servers I can get on there and fight but I like invasion alot better. BY THE WAY I did reformat my computer and reinstall the game and all of its components recently BUT MY COLLEGE ROOMATE GOT THE SAME PROBLEM. I have Win 98 (sad but true I ain't got the new stuff.) Roomate got win XP.(He already disabled all the firewall crap) About 3 weeks ago it was working 100% on his computer all things were good. Same with mine 3 weeks ago. It was all good on mine until I reformated (Reformated due to Kazaa and other programs with spyware screwing with me). The university does have a firewall but that can't be it because both of us were on invasion servers and such before and all was good then.

If anyone comes up with a solution to this (Either mine or my roomates problem, I'm pretty sure the same thing effecting him is affecting me but if I'm wrong then tell me which way you got a fix for), If anyone comes up with a solution to this in their reply write something like "El Mat and his roomate's problem" or something like that. All was well with all stuff about 3 weeks ago and roomate did not install something new and my stuff is the same way it was 3 weeks ago. BTW we both have the newest patch and the bonus packs and brightskins and all other new stuff on UT 2003 site and we have Mr Pant's excessive UT. We both got the same exact UT stuff; except for CD's and CDkey of course. I'll post my UT INI and log file later to see if they help more. I got class now. Someone please reply with some help.

Peace

I HAVE NOW TRIED ALL THE FIXES AND HERE IS THE RESULT

Matador jumps out of chair and celebrates!!!!

But in an odd way

Why you ask well....

1 The lists for the game types that did not work before only started working after about a minute of quering before I put them there for like 10 minutes and nothing happened. With the fixes, 1 minute it now takes and I suppos I can wait a minute

2 Guess who's fix helped me. Bull's fix. Bull helped Matador. Well now:weird: :haha:

Thanks Bull. If I ever get in a fight with you I'll go easy on you...for exactly 1 second.

I'll send a copy of my UT2003.ini to my roomate and let him see if it fixes his too.

latest Edit:Yep roomate can get on too it all good

Thanks again Bull

Peace

I was having the same connection problems, and u_Bull's fix worked. When I checked my ut2003.ini file, I was missing servers 2 and 3, and the ports were set to zero.
In other words...
I changed this:
[IpDrv.MasterServerLink]
LANPort=11777
LANServerPort=10777
CurrentMasterServer=1
MasterServerPort[0]=28902
MasterServerAddress[0]=ut2003master1.epicgames.com
MasterServerPort[1]=28902
MasterServerAddress[1]=ut2003master2.epicgames.com
MasterServerPort[2]=0
MasterServerAddress[2]=
MasterServerPort[3]=0
MasterServerAddress[3]=
MasterServerPort[4]=0
MasterServerAddress[4]=

To this:
[IpDrv.MasterServerLink]
LANPort=11777
LANServerPort=10777
CurrentMasterServer=1
MasterServerPort[0]=28902
MasterServerAddress[0]=ut2003master.epicgames.com
MasterServerPort[1]=28902
MasterServerAddress[1]=ut2003master1.epicgames.com
MasterServerPort[2]=28902
MasterServerAddress[2]=ut2003master2.epicgames.com
MasterServerPort[3]=0
MasterServerAddress[3]=
MasterServerPort[4]=0
MasterServerAddress[4]=

Hope this helps. Thanks u_Bull!

this info can be found in your ut2003.ini file
this file resides in you \ut2003\system directory
open the file in notepad or simialr
go to edit menu & select find & add the line below as it appears
[IpDrv.MasterServerLink]
click on find to locate the correct section

HERE IS A COPY OF MY MASTER SERVER LINK SECTION OF UT2003.INI, this conect fine for me (its still the origional settings as well)

[IpDrv.MasterServerLink]
LANPort=11777
LANServerPort=10777
CurrentMasterServer=0
MasterServerPort[0]=28902
MasterServerAddress[0]=ut2003master1.epicgames.com

MasterServerPort[3]=0

MasterServerPort[4]=0

ONE suggestion, copy your ut2003.ini file & user.ini files to an external location for a backup once you get the game set-up to your likeing. Both these files are in your ut2003\system directory

Try sorting the directory by type (details view) & scrolll down to configuration settings type to locate the files

I get the same results when I ping ut2003master1, this is crap. I even tried adding the ip's from when I ping to my hosts file, still no dice. Something is obviously not working with their code, what really sucks is that I used to play this all the time on THIS pc, I haven't made any changes and have no firewalls the only thing I did was re-install and update UT2003 to the latest patch.

Doesn't EpicGames put up a website that tells you the status of the Masters? Seems logical, would reduce the pissed off feeling I'm having right now...

With Status-page:
"Can't connect, hmm I'll go check the status page. Oh I see it's down, I guess I will wait until later then try again."

Without Status-page:
"Can't connect, what the hell is going on here?!!! Wonder if anything funky has happened on my end, let me rip apart my home network and ip configuration on my PC and try to troubleshoot it..."

As of Jan. 31st, 2004, approx. 2:45pm (Pacific), the stats stopped logging for all servers and players.

The Master Server has been crashing on and off for about three days now.

It would be appropriate to post the reasons why in this forum. I agree with a simple status notification.

But why make things simple and easy? After all, we ARE talking about a game, here. It is supposed to be difficult to deal with

WinXP: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open it with notepad or some other text editor. Scroll all the way to the end and look for two entries similiar to the following:

208.39.46.23 ut2003master2.epicgames.com # Unreal4All

I use the Linux Client, and for a few days ago, i was unable to connect to the master server. I cant play UT2003 and i cant play the SAS-mod.

I have NO firewall, and have played the game for a year, without problems. I have chatted with some programmers of the SAS-mod, and they have no problems in the Windows client. Just a short brakedown and then it was fixed. But in the Linux client, it remains broken.

(I have no Windows to test UT2003 in)

Same Problem. 3 days ago works fine, now stuck with "Querying Master Server." Since I used to play just fine, and so many people with the same problem all of a sudden, I believe the problem lies with the master server.

Change to:

Success!

It was ZoneAlarm!

I already had uninstalled it but low and behold in my MSCONFIG under services "True Vector Internet Monitor..... running"

Son of a *****, I hate when the uninstall program doesn't get rid of everything. I unchecked that service, saved and rebooted....... Voila! Instant connection to the master server!

Interestingly enough I had to go in and Manually remove all the ZoneAlarm entries to make it stop screwing my Internet Explorer after removing the Internet Monitor.

I hope this helps!
