View Full Version : Trailer's "old lady" voice theory

Tyrant's Heart

There's something about the "old lady's" voiceover in the trailers. In the latest trailer, when she pronounce "crushed" at the "valiant defense" line, there's a sense of venom & disdain in her inflection. Also, she refers the populace of Sera as "humans of Sera" rather than "Serans."

My only conclusion so far: She's the main villain. What kind of villain? Is she the Queen of the Locusts?

What about you guys?

If the Locusts are hive-mind types, it's possible the "old lady" must be the Locusts' leader who bears a higher intelligence that can control them. Which explains why she's the only one that "speaks good English."

I don't know, that voice sounds at least late 30's early 40's, kind of a Captain Janeway/Judy Dench from Riddick mix. That chick looks mid-20's at most.

lol, wow you guys think the exact same same way i do! I think that the women talking is NOT human, but she talks 2 much like one to be a Locust, so I'm not sure. Your right, in the trailer it's as though she's happy humanity is being wiped out. Like we're weak creatures or something. And since she always says 'humans' instead of 'Serrians' then i don't think she is human. Maybe she's not in the game at all, maybe she just talks that way so it doesn't seem like she has chossen a side to win. I don't no, post your thoughts.

THE VOICE IS NOT ANYA!!!! I HAVE PROOF!!! In the video where Marcus is riding on the mining cart, at the beginning of the ride Marcus is starting to go into a furnace, and then he says "ANYA! We're heading into the fire!!! Reroute! Anywhere, now!!!" That means that the voice on the radio in that video is Anya, and she sounds nothing like the "old lady"!!! Finally I have proof!! Oh sweet, sweet victory! Almost as sweet as P-OWNing someone with a chainsaw!!:D

JohnWayne360

Well, if it'll ease your mind, while I was in college, I had to study a whole lot of literature. One of the things I learned about is something called the "Omniscient Narrator." Said narrator tells the story as if he/she knows every detail of the story, in the same manner the old lady does it in the trailer. Again, just another mechanism in storytelling. if she had anything to do with it, she would include some sort of "personal" input as she is narrating.

I love her voice and I agree it does sound like the Kate Blanchett LOTR narrative voice with a bit of antagonism against the "humans of Sera". What if she was related to the Locusts somehow? I really don't know, just another thought. Oh, and the Locusts do speak, there's a reason for that. They're characteristics really add to the menace of the story. Everything has a reason. Nothing is by accident.

Shifty

There could be more to it but I doubt any of us will be able to figure it out. I say just take it at face value until the game comes out and we find out the truth.

Finally, we're on the same wavelngth, Trooper. She must be the reason behind the Locust invasion. Why do you think she refers to the Seran people as the "humans of Sera" rather than plain "Serans?" Why is there a feeling of venom & arrogance in her voice when she's narrating?

Or perhaps she is just a "Omniscient Narrator" as Marion360 said.

I just realise something. The voice could've been Dr Helen Cooper, inventor of the Lightmass Process that converts Imulsion into energy.

Still, the speculation continues.

i think the narrator is how all the locusts REALLY sound and the grunting and killing is just an act. I mean cmon, they are an evil advanced civilization, whats more evil than old British women?! The Locust have tea party's with Imulsion as there the cream, and got pissed and emerged when the tea tasted like crap!

Or she is one of the original Earthlings that left earth right after it became lifeless for running out of resources and they ended up on Sera, discovered Imulsion and it mutated or made them in the Locusts. Being like junkies they dug deep into the Seran soil to keep harvesting the imulsion and she sees "the humans" come and sees the process of Earth repeat and desperately wants to keep them away from Imulsion by the most obvious way, annilihation...

FLIPINOM4D

it might be the queen because it sounded more it was describing how the human race fail to win against the locust and maybe teh queen was telling the story

07-29-2006, 01:29 AM
I found it kinda interesting how she said the Serans knew the "illusion of peace", it makes me think something covert was going on prior to Emergence day. Not really sure if this is relevant, but just sharing.

FLIPINOM4D

Well, you've made me think. I hope you see the contradiction here. Humans were supposed to be fighting each other on the "Pendulum Wars," and the only reason why they stopped was because of "E-Day." Now, how can there be peace when you're in a war? How can you know the illusion of it if one's involved in a conflict for 70 years? Destroyed beauty cites Sera as being in the "brink or armaggedon." Somewhat contradictory, as you've said, "I'm not sure if it's relevant, but just sharing"

Groundwalker

I think the voice is too perfectly cast for it to be "just a narrator"....it sounds like someone "expensive". There's got to be something deeper going on there. Locust queen seems as reasonable a guess as anything.

Ok, jusy want to throw this out there. Everyone keeps saying the Locust can't talk or are bad at it. First, the admin DID state they could talk, and another, I'm pretty sure we have all heard them, think. You know those four videos on the Emergence Day flash site thingy with the matches and all that? Go and watch again the "Fight or Die" one. Right in the beginning a creepy ass voice says "Die, sapien." . Yeaaa, if thats not a Locust then I'll be chainsawed, curb stomped, then damned.

Ok, at first I was a firm skeptic about this theory, but watching the new MP vids, I'm starting to turn into a believer. At the end of one of the rounds, which the locust team won, the same "old lady" voice said "we've won this battle, but the war its not over yet, and it's a war we will win." This phrase is clearly affiliating the "old lady" to the locust. Another of her phrases states, "those who oppose you are dead." Furthermore, when the CoGs win, it's Colonel Hoffman's voice who is emphasized by saying "Good Job men, I expect noting less from you." So, this brings me to my conclusion, given the fact that Colonel Hoffman is a CoG leader, and his voice is used at the end of a wining round for the CoG characters, couldn't we conclude that the same applies for the 'old lady" voice, making her some sort of Locust leader?

well, in one of the movies from the emergence day sight, there is a feminine raspy voice that says kill the sapiens (reminded me of the voices of those psychic things from chronicles of riddick), which seems like either a hive mind thing or a queen thing. whether or not this could carry over to the narrator tho, i am not sure. i did notice, however, that she was rather cold with humans, but maybe in some sick plot twist its because the humans deserve it ;p

For Reference the Narrorator sounds alot like Alice Krige , she has been in many horror films , and sci-fi , most popular would be Star Trek First Contact , as the Borg collective leader , or in Silent Hill as the psycho religious freak .

I could be wrong but if using her as the narrorator has some story line implications , Good Call Epic , she has one of the best voices for evil / loonatic / bad guy boss girl ever .

Dark1217--Your reply to Slingshot's post indicates you might have found some proof it's Alice Krige--do you have a link? Looking at imdb.com, it doesn't credit her as any voice in GoW or list the game in her credits list.

I do agree, it sounds A LOT like Krige, and I think the woman will be shown (in sequel or prequel) to be the Queen of the Locust, whoever it is doing the voice.

Some important things that may not have been mentioned yet:

1. The voice is NOT a narrator, when you finish the game she says "we" several times, implying that she is involved with the locusts and is not some outside storyteller.

2. In multiplayer when you lose a match as the locusts, sometimes she well say "perhaps the locust are not strong as I had originally thought" which leads me to believe she is a more powerful being that uses the locusts to do her will, but is not one of them.
