In GoW multiplayer, would you rather have enormous, CTF like maps or controlled (in size), chaotic smaller maps. Personally, I find that in multiplayer shooters, smaller maps tend to me much more strategical, intense games then lengthy, boring bigger maps. Smaller maps creates a fight for certain weapons, induces intense gunfights, and allows for teams to show off tactical plays and strats. Your opinions??!!

4v4 should be for smaller map, but I am sure there will be larger maps for 4v4. That's not good idea, but 4v4 is pretty fair. Just let you know.

i say if the 4 on 4 is implemented then they should be in large maps. i also say the users should have the option to decide what maps to play with.

i think gears will mostly have small to medium maps but it might have a couple large ones

I like a good clash between 4 on 4 games. the best way to make that happen is to make large maps. So I say make a good combination of maps so it fits everyones style.

The maps should be a small size, with a mixture of big open spaces and small corridors, so if you wanted a corridor cover battle in some hallway, or a small war outside, you'd be given the privillage (sp?).

Since they said there are a few vehicles im expecting a few big levels in there.!

I dont see why there cant be both! Of course the player should be able to choose, but certain scenarios call for certain level sizes.

Gears of War is gonna own no matter what so i dont care.

Medium and small are in the future of GoW.

I think there should be mid sized maps, with cluttered urban terrain. running from one bombed out building to another crossing blind open streets with only a smothering SUV to protect your mad dash to another building would be grate... also mazes of ally ways and trashed parking lots could add to the suspense of what's around the corner or what's lurking in the windows of the surrounding buildings

a map thats just a huge bridge with a few boxes on it, and shooting all the wires collapses the bridge onto the river below, where the battle takes place atop the floatin remains.

Thats such a sweet idea. They should have that but you land in lava like in (Star Wars Episode 3) Theres the lava-level :) SkateXer99 knows what im talking about...

I think we will see medium to small with maybe a large one here and there. It really looks like it's going to be in your face and up close using the chainsaw and what not. However it's nice to have large ones if vehicle play a big part in it.

I love large maps

I'm not a fan of massively large maps. If it's only an 8 player limit, then I want small maps, for nonstop action. But if I want a slower paced match, probably pick a big map.

When I say small, I don't mean some two room map either, I mean like a few rooms with a large open one, and tons of hallways.

i'm not really worried about map size, i'm sure Epic is much better at determining map size than i would be, i'm more concerned with what the maps are and making sure they are varied enough. i think they should have one map in the rain like that video they showed at TGS or whatever, where it's raining at night time, that would be intense in multiplayer.

we know there will be maps in the destroyed ruins of urban environments, thats where much of the game takes place, but i want some rural maps, maybe a forest area or something, i think that could be cool.

I think a huge map, one that is way to freaking big for 8 players. Just a huge post war city level. Ruined multi story buildings, that you can hide out in or use to get to the next street over, sewers you can use to sneak under an enemy and then flank them. Just a level that's so big that you get paranoid after a few minutes of silence. A level that's so big that when the enemy shoots at you the first time it's so unexpected that you jump out of your chair.

But yeah, levels of all sizes should and probably will be in the game. They just need at least one that's just way to big.

The thought have stuck me several times. The single player maps are rather big for multiplayer, if you ask me. I hope for small/medium maps whilst playing 4vs4. The Co-op will have the same maps there are in the single player event.

Small and medium, 8 players isin't enough for large maps.

There is no lava in Gears of War. :)

Yeah, but on the OXM issue with Gears, in Farcry it talks about a lava-level and minecart, then over in the Gears section it talks about the mine-cart in Gears with a title as "Where's the lava-level?"

Though it was a little confusing, the gears preview was before the Farcry one, which the joke wouldn't make sense unless you backtracked.

Oh well, lava or not, a huge crumbling bridge would be a fun 3 minute map.

He seems proud of that fact, and I am glad also, tired of dying like that.

SkateXer99 - That level has an incinerator but no LAVA if you listen to Marcus he tells the girl hacking the computer to divert the trains from the Incinerator.

So hot fire maybe but no Lava I'm sure CliffyB is serous about it. ;)

I do prefer the smaller maps, but I do like to play the bigger maps once in a while, especially if it's a sniper style maps with lots of high places.

agreed, those maps are so much fun to play

I think the maps should be from small to huge with lots of players

basically to sum everything up, i think there shold be a variety of different sized maps ;)

Ferretwave333
05-28-2006, 11:13 AM
While I think there should be a variety. I think small maps suit Gear's gameplay better. Also I prefer small maps cause you get to really know the layout while in larger maps you tend to not.

RIGOR_MORTIS

I don't see the full 8 player maps getting too big. I'd like a variety though. Better 1 or 2 maps too big than all of them too small for many people.

If there are vehicles in multiplayer there will certainly need to be a few larger maps.

I'm not sure why the vehicle prospect forces one to adopt a large map approach. After all, vehicles are still used in urban combat - even after they've been shelled to crap and the roads are nearly impassible. Smaller terrain will force folks to use vehicles more strategically as well as limiting their range capabilities. Personally I don't care what kind of map sizes are available; as long as they are 'smart' maps. Given the fun I've had with Epic's past titles, especially the Unreal titles, I have no worries about their level design abilities.

I think that they should put in large and small maps to suit different people.

Vehicles need larger maps.

Sure, vehicles are used in urban battles IRL, but they are used more in those cases for thicker armor and superior firepower, not mobility. You aren't going to see an APC tearing through an urban environment at near-top speed.

If your vehicles are only going to be for thicker armor and superior firepower in an urban combat environment, then why not just add powerups like UT's Keg O' Health and Quake's different grades of armor pickups, along with tossing in a few more powerful weapons to give you that same advantage?

I believe Cliff said at one point that this isn't going to be Battlefield 2. The combat is not intended to be on that large of a scale. This is largely infantry combat, so I wouldn't expect to see weapons platforms like attack choppers and MBTs in Gears. I would expect to see instead dropships and APCs, both which we've seen examples of in the footage so far.

Those are vehicles that are intended to increase the mobility of a group of infantry to get them into an advantageous combat situation, often while providing a bit of suppressive fire. I imagine that's going to be a lot more useful in Gears than an MBT would be.

Zooming up in an APC up to where your enemy is guarding their flag in a CTF match and unloading your squad under the supressive fire of the APC's guns is the type of scenario I think would work best to utilize vehicles in multiplayer. I would think then, that if the mobility of the vehicles is going to be the advantage to using them, that you'd need maps large enough to give you that advantage by allowing you to put a large amount of space between you and your opponents.

I would prefer mostly smaller maps, but I think that a few long and skinny maps would be pretty fun. You would have to dead sprint from your spawn point in order to get in the best cover position possible in the middle, and also to grab any weapons that might be out there.

I dont expect huge maps with 8 players. Prolly some decent sized ones but we'll prolly end up finding maps with a few rooms, lots of hallways, and acouple big rooms.
