I've posted this on MLG and on Xbox.com. Now that I'm a new member here at Gears forums, I thought I'd share this writeup that I did today.
What game will change console shooter gaming in this generation? Gears of War. I am going to list specific reasons on why I believe this game is going to change the shooter genre forever on the consoles.
Halo was the first game since Golden Eye that really revolutionized the console shooter. It brought new elements of game play and started the trend of using one stick to move while the other stick on the controller was used to aim. At first, it was a difficult learning process, but over time, it was mastered with ease. Halo brought the true multiplayer experience to the living room of many gamers. The ability to take your hop into the game and battle a friend 1v1 and frag them over and over and over to our hearts content was nothing short of awesome.
Halo provided a new genre of shooters too. It was arcade but at the same time, it could be played tactical. The map environments were flawless and provided hours and hours of fragging luxury.
Gears of War is going to change the way we play shooters. What GRAW tried to bring to the table of tactical shooters, GOW is going to create it. Halo set the foundation, Gears is going to expand it.
I will take paintball as an example of real life multiplayer action. I’m not an expert in paintball but from what I have played, I can say that it’s much like a real-life multiplayer experience.
In paintball, your objective is to eliminate the other opposing team. You use cover such as tires, walls, tall grass, small structures, etc, anything to help you keep cover while in the fire fight. It’s tactical but at the same time, it’s fast. You don’t take time to take cover, you sprint to that spot.
For example, if your taking fire at one location and you return fire and see the other guy running to another cover location, you’re going to try to advance on him. You will fire rounds of paintballs to help keep them in cover while you sprint to your next location, it could be another tire structure or perhaps some barrels. The point is, you’re not going to walk to that location and then slowly duck down, and you’re going to sprint and dive or even roll into the cover position.
In Gears of War, I think that Epic as captured that realism of real-life tactical combat.

You will see what I described about Paintball in this video.
In Gears, you will have the ability to sprint from point A to point B without any type of slow down, unless you get killed in the process.
What I find amazing is that there is no slowdown between going from a run position into a cover position. Same goes for coming out of a cover position and changing into a standing stance or hopping over cover structure and sprinting to another.
In my opinion, shooter games have never really been able to capture that realism. That is something that I think use shooter fans have been urging for. The ability to run, duck, go prone, slam our backs to a wall, peak around a corner, run from one cover spot to another with no delay.
Let’s face the facts, in real life, you’re not going to have a delay from the time you have taken cover at one location and then run to another. The only delay would be to check the corner and make sure it’s clear, other than that, you will never want to waste time on coming out of cover and running to another position.
GRAW and PDZ both messed up on this concept. The delay between crouching and covering is too long and non-realistic.
Gears will truly change the way we play shooter games. In no means will Gears be a slow game. I believe it will be very fast paced due to the ability to take cover so fast without delay.
Here’s what I expect to see in a typical multiplayer team death match:

Player A will be posted on the left pillar and will shoot cover fire to allow his teammate to move up to the position behind that couch. As soon as that player reaches the couch, he will sprint to the Cabinet and whip out the shot gun allowing him to fire some close range shots. Player A will leave the first position he was at and roll to the couch and assume cover there.
This can all happen in a matter of seconds. No delays, no waiting to come from a crouch to a standing position, vice versa for coming from a cover position to a sprinting position that will then go back into a cover position.
This type of combat will be fast. It will remain tactical at the same time though. Tactical does not always mean slow. When you feel that your enemy is off guard, you can perform a rush on them and force them to have to think fast.
What I imagine are players in a multiplayer match really moving around fast taking cover positions left and right, much like players do in a typical paintball match. It will force other players to have to really think about their current position and think of what other positions they can take incase an ambush occurs.
It’s fast, tactical and still focuses on taking cover instead of running and gunning.
There will be times when you can run and gun, but most likely that will be the most dangerous play style to use.
Some think this game will be slow; it will be far from it.
