Is there going to be an option to make weapon selection on the XYAB buttons instead of the D-pad?

I find it pretty annoying that the D-pad would be used for switching weapons.

During gameplay, I would not want to take my left thumb off the left thumbstick in order to change weapons. I think that will take away from movement big time. You'd have to practically stop and change weapons.

I hope that we are allowed full customization of control configs.

My ideal control config would be:

Left stick- movement
Right Stick- aiming/click down for scope
A- action button for cover, rolling, etc.
Y- weapon change
X- reload
B- Melee
RT- primary fire
LT- zoom in 3rd person view
RB- grenades
LB- dunno yet lol.

I would never want the d-pad used in-game unless it was for like squad commands.

Does anyone else feel that the D-pad is very bad for using it for changing weapons?

no i like the GoW controls, they just fit, for ur sake i hope they let u customize it, but then all the lil "helpful hints" that say stuff like "X" to switch weapon, will be pointless.........

the GoW controls are a lot different than other games and thats because gears will be a lot better than the other games, i will get used to it and so will you, just because the game will be so good

I just don't like the D-pad to be switching weapons. It affects the gameplay and combat. It may not seem to take long to press down on the d-pad or left or right, but you still have to take your left thumb off the left stick or take your right thumb and touch it.

either way, you're either going to have to stop movement, or stop aiming. During an intense firefight, how you suppose to switch to a close range shotty or some other weapon when you run out of ammo? The d-pad will get annoying.

Not dogging it, but I really would love to be able to have Y as my changing weapons.

I'm sure I will get used to other controls, but I just don't like the idea of the D-pad being the weapon changer. I'd prefer the Y button, it's closer and easier to hit.

one thing to keep in mind though, is that in gears, you'll be stationary while behind cover alot more than in other action games, so switching won't hinder movement near as much as other games (although, admittedly, it will still do so occasionally) the Y button (or any face button for that matter) really only works when you can only carry 2 weapons, but in Gears you have 3, 4 counting grenades since you have to switch from a gun to grenades instead of just throwing them (which is more realistic anyways.) so pressing the Y button would switch to one weapon, but you'd have to press it again to go to the NEXT weapon. personally, i'm able to reach over and hit a direction pretty quickly, and i always make very deliberate actions in switching weapons, doing so when i feel safe enough to switch, so i'm not worried about being shot while trying to switch because i won't be switching weapons while wide open and exposed. as long as you play smart, it shouldn't be a problem....

first of all it will make it seem more "realistic", and trust me eventlually u will get used to it and i bet by the end of the week after E-day everyone will be able to quick switch like nuthing.............just wait:)

Can someone from Epic Games please tell us how the controls are going to work and/or if we can customise our controls to suit our needs.

I don't know if there'll be TOTAL customization since THEY have TOLD us what the buttons are and the game actually gives you clues during the game. Like "Hold Y for scene" or whatever... You'll pick the right stick reversal, but that's it I'm thinking. If you don't like the controls, you don't like em. But bottom line, if they're weird at first, you'll most likely get used to em.

Just like THE OTHER BIG FRANCHISE on Xbox, you can't either.

Peace.

most concern is that is there gonna be southpaw

lol, southpaw.

I hope they at least have some variations to choose from when it comes to controls. Some people like different controls then others, depending on the games they've played.

From our discussion at the other forum Dan (;)), you know what I think, haha. I don't really think it's a big deal, but different strokes for different folks. You're used to one config, that's all.

i got an email from cliffy saying that there will be "legacy" settings for the thumbsticks in Gears (Left Stick= Forward, Back, Turn Left and Right/ Right Stick=Look Up and Down, Strafe)

Even though I'm used to one config, it's like that across all my shooter games. I've always used X for reload in games that have a reload function and I've used Y for switching weapons.

Quake 4 on the 306 has a unique setup for controls and you can bind every key to whatever you want.

Default on Quake 4 is the left and right bumpers for weapon switching, LB switchs previous and RB switches to next.

Well, that's very odd feeling to me, so I switched the weapons to X and Y. I can easily press X or Y whenever I need a specific weapon, it cycles, but cycles fast.

Let's say in Gears you're carrying 3 weapons, the pistol, machine gun and a rifle and then the grenades, well, one button could be for switching to grenades, such as one of the bumpers like in COD2.

For weapons though, it should be like a cycling thing. Just keep hitting Y till you reach the weapon you want. That's how it is in Quake, except you can carry up to 8 weapons in that game.

No doubt I could probably get used to a D-pad as switching weapons, but it won't be comfortable even if I do get used to it.

Painkiller recently got released on the xbox and I love that game, but the only downfall is lack of control configs. The weapons are restricted to the D-pad. Meaning, while you are racing through a map and battling someone, you have to take your thumb off the aim to grab a diff weapon for whatever situation you are in, close range, long range, and the time it takes to do that really does make yourself open to die.

What is his email address? I'd like to ask him about control configs and how much customization we are going to have for the buttons as far as binding them. IE: Y for weapon switching.

I see what you're saying Dan, and I don't have a problem with using Y to switch weapons, nor do I have a problem with the D-Pad being used. The thing is, you have to equip everything in order to use it, including grenades - for this, I see the D-Pad being more effective. It just seems quicker to press one button and get the weapon you want (in an immediate sense at least). I see what you mean by the delay with moving your thumb, but I think it's slight and I won't mind it too much. It's all preference though.

I'm with hades because pressing the Y button repeatedly for a certian weapon seems to be a hassle, as you play the game more the directional pad will be more of an instinct thing, you will get faster and faster. Plus when you are switching weapons you can always duck behind cover if you are that slow at it.

So let me get this straight, you would rather continue running straight into someone elses fire while pressing Y repeatedly scrolling through weapons instead of touching the D-pad for maybe half a second. And oh by the way, you are going to need to take cover in this game so stopping that split second of movement should be ok.
